. Specification of Letters Patent: 'atntal 1U, jllglt Application led May 2a, 1918, Serial No. 236,345.
'To allwhom t may concern:
Be it known that ll, WnnmAMl-l. KnLso, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Francisco, in the county of San Franclsco and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Gras-Heaters,
of which the following a specitication.
This invention is an improved gas heater,
the object of theinvention being to provide combination 'and arran ement of parts hereinafter described and c aimed.
ln the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is an elevation of a' gas heater constructed and'arranged in accordance with my inyentiomand with the casing and the dll air intake partly in section.
lglig. 2 1s a verticalv transverse sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a detail vertical sectional view on a larger scale of the air intake, the fan and burner.
Y Fig: dis a fragmentary view of a portion of the casing.
.ln the embodiment of my invention, ll provide a heating coil 1 whlch in'practice may be made of stove pipe of suitable di? ameter and in which the convolutions ,are superposed so that the heating coil is vertical. A suitable casing?, is also provided in "Lwhich the coil is arranged and 4preferably thexcasing has openings 2a. An escape pipe` 3 leads from the upper end of the coil to a Hue or a chimney. Y
I .through the floor. The said'intake element i lalso provide an air intake element which is 'here shown as having a vertical intake arm which extends downwardly is here shown as a pipe which is divided by a partition 6 into a duct 7 `whichfdischarges into the lowermost convolution of th?Av heat coil and a duct Swhich dlscharges Into a casing 9 in which an electric fan 10 is arranged. ,A pipe 11 leads from the casing. 9 and is bent over one side of the heating coil and extends downwardly within the heating coil as at 12 so that the air which is drawn through the duct 8 by the fan is discharged among the convolutions of the coil and is thoroughly heated thereby and finds its way into the room through the openings 2 in the casing and hence serves to thoroughly ventilate the room and. to supply the same with an abundant quantity of heated fresh air.
The burner 13 is here shown as a Bunsen burnerbut within the scope of my invention may be of any vsuitable type or construction and is arranged inthe lower end 14 of the heating coil. Said end 14 has an opening 15 provided with a hinged closure 15 to permit the burner to be readily lighted and pref-V erably a spring 16 is also used to normally keep the closure in closed condition. A suitable opening 17 in the casing aHords access c tothe interior, the said opening being normally closed` by a closure 17. To protect theintake end 14C of the heating coil'l provide a lining 18 which isin practice preferably a tile and is arranged and held above the burner.
llt will be understood that owing length and extent of the heating coil the heat from the burner is fully utilized so that af 'greater economy of the fuel gas is e'ected and, moreover, theheater is highly efficient for heating purposes. When the electrlc fan is'in -operation fresh cold air from the exby'the convolutions'of the heating coil and is heated thereby and discharged into the room so that the/heater also serves -to ii'ectually ventilate the room in which the same is used.
While l have herein shown and described a preferred embodiment of my invention l would. have it understood that changes may be made in the form, proportionv and construction of the several parts without departing from the spirit of my invention and within the-scope of the appended claim.
Having thus described the invention, what isclaimed asV new is Y In a heater ot the class described, an air heating coil, a casing surrounding said coil and ha op therein; an air intake Aterior is discharged in the space surrounded Y pipe communicating with vthe interior of the coiliat one end thereof, a burner arranged in the coil at the point of communication with the said air intake pipe, a blower fan having a casing connected directly with the air ntake pipe to-be supplied with air therefrom and an air delivery pipe leading from the fan casing and extending into the coil casing and arranged to discharge in the space surrounded by the convolutions of the coil ad- 10 jacent the bottom thereof.
In tectimony whereof I affix my signature.
WILLIAM' HENRY KELSO.
