i Speciication of Letters Patent.
Patented June liiibii.
Application filed August 29, 1914. Serial No. 859,163.
T0 all whom it may concern Be it lrnown that l, Gam-IARD l?. Ham/Inns, a citizen ot the United States, residing at Baltimore city, State of Maryland, have invented certain new and usefulv Improvements in Cutts, of which the following is a specification,
This invention relates to cuffs for shirts and like garments and more particularly to the arrangement of the button holes in such cuffs.
Cuties are fastened by means of culi buttons engaged in button holes in both of the overlying layers of the cuil, said overlying layers consisting of the ends of the cutis. The button holes in these ends of the cutis have almost universally been arranged so that they lie parallel with the edges of the cuit, and when these ends of the culi are laid one upon the other, the button holes in each layer coincide with those of the other so that when the small or inner end of the cud button has been passed through such coinciding button holes, said holes are substantially a single hole, that is to say, when the holes thus coincide, and the small end of the button slips through one of them, there is nothing to prevent the end of the button slipping through the coinciding button hole of the overlying end of the culi', and the button is thereby, very often lost beyond recovery.
The primary object of this invention is to provide simple and economical means for overcoming this diiiiculty and in carrying out this object, the invention consists primarily in the provision of button holes in the ends of cuffs and the like, arranged with relation to each other so that when the ends oi" the cutis are overlaid for the insertion of the buttons, the button holes in said overlying ends will lie at an angle to each other, and will not coincide.
rlhe invention further consists in the specie forms and arrangements of the cuff and its button holes which will be hereinafter fully described and afterward specifically claimed.
l'n order that the construction and operation thereof may be readily comprehended, an approved embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l represents a view in perspective of the end of a sleeve, with the wrist band and cudl attached thereto and having their ends overlaid in the position they assume when the cuff is secured to the wearer. Fig. 2 represents, in plan, the same parts, spread out flat, the drawing being upon a somewhat smaller scale than that of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 represents the same parts, on the same scale as in Fig. 2, the cuil' being overlaid on the wrist band, but not folded over for the purpose of securing it on the wearer.
Like reference characters designate the same parts wherever they occur in a plurality or' the igures of the drawings.
Referring specifically to the drawings, 5 indicates what may be denominated the outer end of the sleeve to which is attached, either integrally or by proper seams, what might be denominated the inner folds of the culi but which, for the purposes of this speciication, will becalled the wrist band 6, while 7 designates the outer fold of the cuii` which for the purposes of this specification will be denominated simply the culi'.
Ordinarily the parts 6 and 7 are each provided near their ends with button holes which have generally been arranged in directions parallel to each other and to the outer edges of the culti and wrist band. Some times the cuil' has been worn in the position with relation to the sleeve as illustrated in Fig. 2, though ordinarily the part will be worn arranged as shown in Fig. l. ln either form, the old style ot button holes, when the parts are folded over so that the ends ot either the culi as in Fig. 2 or the folded back culi as in Fig. l, will overlie each other, and the button holes will coincide with each other but in carrying out my invention l have provided button holes 8 and 9 in the wrist band, and 10 and ll in the cud proper, all of which button holes lie in direction at an inclination to the edges of the cud, so that when the cuill proper is folded over on the wrist band, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3, and the cuit arranged as in Fig. l with the opposite ends ot the culi and wrist band overlying each other, the button holes in the opposite ends of both the wrist band and culi', will lie at an angle to each other, the only coinciding parts, being the ends of the holes as at 12 in Figs. l and 3, said coinciding ends forming the apex of a V, the legs of which are represented by the main bodies of the button holes.
When the cuil1 button is inserted, as for instance from the outside, through overlaid button holes 8, 9, l() and ll, in the form of Fig. l, the direction of the button holes Vio With relation to each other Will be such that any strain tending to release the inner end of the button from the inner button hole,
Will be resisted by the edges of the overlyingv button hole, and even though the smaller head of the button hole should for any rea- Vson slip through the one button hole, the
relative positions of this button hole With those superposed upon it, is such that there will be no tendency Whatever for the said inner head of the button to slip through any of these superposed holes.
While I have specifically described the location and direction of the button holes asillustrated, I desire-it to be understood that changes and variations` may be made therein Without departing from the spirit and scope of ther invention as hereinafter claimed., Y
Having Vthus fully described my invention What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent ofthe United States is,-
A Wrist band having a cuff attached thereto and provided With aV permanent folding line therebetween whereby said cuil can be folded back upon the Wrist band, said cuff and'wrist band each being provided adjacent their ends with a button hole inclined relative to said folding line, said button holes in each respective part being inclined in opposite directions and corresponding button holes in respective ends being arranged parallel with each other with their outer terminals spaced an equal distance from the folding line and also from the edges of said ends, whereby, when the cuff is folded upon the Wrist band, said corresponding button holes will lie in angular relation with respect` to each other and to said folding line with their outer terminals in register and diverging backwardlyy toward the center of the cu.
ln testimony whereof l afx niy signature in presence of two witnesses.
