l DOUBLE-ACTING LAvAToRY-HINGE.
T0 all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, OsoAn KATZEmarinera,
a citizen of the United Statesfand a residentv of Chicago, in the countyl of Cook and State ofk Illinois, haVe'invented `a new and Improved Double-Acting Lavatory-Hinge,
of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates tov improvements in spring hinges, and particularly to an improved double acting hinge which may be easily fitted to a door or support of any thickness. v Y A Another object of the invention is to provide a hinge with a center having a barrel at each end arranged on one side thereof to connect the hinge with a support.
A. further object ofthe invention is to simplify the entire construction of hinge whereby stamped material may be usedfor most of the parts and yet a strong easily operatedfstructure presented. 'p
In the accompanying drawings-Figure 1 is a side view of a hingeembodying the invention, the same Vbeingcsh'own applied; Fig. 2 is asection through Fig.` 1 on line 2 2; Fig. 3 is a section through Fig. 2 approximately onV lined-3; Fig. 4 is a section through Fig. 2 approximatelyon liney 4 4; Fig. 5V is a 'sectionthroughD-.Fig 2 approximately on line 5 5; Fig. 6 is a sectional view through Fig. 1l approximately on lineS-(, thedoor -being shown hinged to one side in dotted lines; Fig. 7 is a top plan view of the hinge with both leaves shown open, the samehbeing shown in this position' merely for'the purpose of illustration; Fig. 8 is a front view of one pair of clamping members embodying certain features of the invention Fig. 9 is a view similar to Fig. 8 showing an enlarged clamping member. Y
Referring to the accompanying drawings by numerals, 1 indicates v'afsupport of any desired kind, as for instance a marble slab used in the construction of a lavatoryV and 2,* y al suitable door associated with the marble.:
slab 1.
The hinge is formedwith a center 3 (Fig. 7) having barrels 4 and 5, said barrels being arranged on the same face of the center and co-acting with ears 6 and v7 on leaf 8, and with ears 9 and 10 on leaf 11. The center 3, leaves 8 and 11 and associated parts are preferably stamped from sheet metal i -V Specification of Letters Patent.
whereby a simple strongV structure is presented. In forming the center 3 a bracing plate 12 is provided and. a single sheet having theends connected at 13 vis formed with acenter part 14 oppositeplate 12, the oppo site edges of portion 14 being formed into the barrels 4 and 5 and then theY ends bent I over to a positionnadjacent each other at line 13. Suitable rivets 15 are provided which extend through the vsection or por-V` tion 14 -to the endsof the sheet Vof whichv portion 14 isa part, and also through the plate V12 whereby a stiff ystrong structure lis presented defining what is lknown as ahingeY center, whichhinge center is formed with the barrels`4 and y5. The leaf 11 is intended to be the leaf connected with the door. This leaf `is formed with ears 9 and 10, and with a longitudinal sector or bracing iiangeV 16.

Riveted Yor otherwise rigidly secured to the leaf 11 is a clamping plate 17 formed with a base 18 having upstanding flanges 19, and with a side member 20 provided with apertures/for receiving clamping bolts. Associated with the side member 20 is a clamps ing side member 21which is provided. with grooves whereby the sidev memberI 21 may slidingly fit the diverging iianges 19 as shown more particularly in Figs; k8 and-9. This provides a clamping structure for con,-k nectingl the hinge to door 2. By forming this clamping structurewith a base or bottom portion 17 rivets 22 will holdV the parts rigidly together and will hold the door re ceiving clamping members centrally of the leaf 11. The leaf 8 has rivetedV thereto la base 23,V similar kto base 17, which base is provided with a sideplate 24, and with d iverging` flanges .25`similar to diverging flanges 1.8.' The diverging flanges 25 are adapted to accommodate a Vclamping sidey fplate" 26, which side plate is provided with-divergingslots into which thecflanges 25 project. The rivets 27 rrwhich hold the flanges 25 in position are arranged to'liold the base 23l centrally of the leaf 8.y The leaf Sis provided with a vpartially encircling edge `28v which overlaps the barrel 4, and with a partially `encircling portion 29 which overlaps part of the barrel 5.
By providing the clamping structure which includes the base 23 and associated parts means are presented which will hold the hinge centrally of a marble slab or other support, and which may be changed as shown in Figs. 8 and 9 for accommodating same distance' apa-rt in each' ligure, and are' different thicknesses of marble slabs or other supports. The boxy flangersecured to 'the support 1 is rivetedJ t'o one ofthe leaves, and the box liange securedf tfo2 they door 2 is riveted to the other leaf. The location ofy theserivetsvmagy be-v-ariedl during the Ina/nu facture of the hinge to fit supports and doors of any desired size, whereby fih'efhinge-will be properly centered. Figs. S and 9 show the-same construction" except that the diiferj ent ligures show' clamping' means for differentsized"I marble' slabs or doors: t is" to' be notedi that; the' apertures 30* shown inthese" figures' which receiveythe' rivetsl for holdingbase' 18l orbasex 23a place are:v the` similarly' arranged so'y thatv anyy sized clamping4 means will fit any' hinge; i It is` to be noted that byproviding'pthe flangesA 25v an' arrangement is presented' which willv taire` care lof any irregularities, aand also' any slight difference in the thickness vof the.
