GATE-CLOSER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed March 26, 1914.
Patented June 23, 1914.
Serial No. 827,454.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT BUJEWsKI, a citizen of the United States, residing at Nashville, in the county of \Vashington and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Gate-Closer, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention appertains to gate closers, and aims to provide a novel and improved device of that character.
The present invention contemplates the provision of a guiding device for the weight cord of a gate closer, which shall be of unique construction, in order to reduce the wear of the weight cord, and which will enable the closing device to operate in the most effective manner.
It is also the object of the present invention to provide a device of the nature indicated, of comparatively simple, compact, durable and inexpensive construction, the component parts of which may be readily assembled and separated, and which will be convenient, practical and efficacious in its use.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
The invention has been illustrated in its preferred embodiment in the accompanying drawing, wherein- Figure 1 is an inside view of a gate, illustrating the present closing device applied thereto. Fig. 2 is an enlarged plan view of the improved guiding attachment for the weight cord. Figs. 3 and 4 are sectional views taken on the lines 3-3 and 44 of Fig. 2 respectively.
In the drawing, the numeral 1 designates an ordinary gate, which is hinged to the gate post 2.
The present attachment, which is applied to the gate post 2, is in the form of a frame or case 3 including a back or base plate 4 having depending and horizontally projecting ears or lobes 5 and 6, respec tively, at one lower corner, and a front or face plate or section 7, which is in the form of a cap or housing. The bottom or lower end of the cap or housing 7 is provided with a depending ear or lobe 8 adapted to rest against the ear or lobe 5 of the back or base plate 4, while one side of the cap or housing 7 is provided with an ear or lobe 9 adapted .to rest against the ear or lobe 6 of the plate 4. The top or upper end of the cap or housing 7 is provided with an upstanding ear or lobe 10 adapted to rest against the upper end portion of the plate 4. The ears 8, 9 and 10 of the cap or housing 7 are apertured, and the ears 5 and 6 and the upper end portion of the plate 4 are provided with apertures registering or coinciding therewith, whereby nails, screws or other securing members may be passed through the registering apertures to take into the post 2, for securing the parts or elements 4 and 7 of the case to the hinge post. It is evident that when the parts or plates 4 and 7 are attached to the post 2, as indicated, they will also be clamped or secured together by the nails or other fastening means.
The cap or housing 7 is provided with cut away portions or openings 11 and 12 at those corners between the sides having the ears 9 and the upper and lower ends. The openings 11 and 12 permit-access to a pulley or sheave 13 disposed within the case between the parts 4 and 7, or within the cap or housing 7, the pulley or sheave 13 having a spindle or trunnion member 14 journaled through the central portions of the plates 4 and 7.
The cap or housing 7 is provided at that side opposite the side having the ear 9, with a channel shaped projection or extension 15, the sides or flanges 16 of which are spaced from the back or base plate 4, and are provided at their inner or free edges with vertically alining notches 17. The back plate 4 is provided with flanges or angular portions 18 projecting to and flush with the flanges 16 of the channel shaped extension 15, the outer or free edges of the flanges 18 being provided with notches 19 complementing the notches 17 and forming bearings therewith. A spool or flanged roller 20 is disposed within the extended portion of the case formed by the extension '15 and the flanges 18, and has a rigid spindle or trunnion member 21 journaled through the bearings 17 -19.
It is to be observed that the axis or spindle 14 of the pulley or sheave 13 is horizontal, while the spindle or axis 21 of the spool or roller 20 is vertical, the plane of the pulley or sheave 13 being approximately tangential with the outer side of the spool or sheave 20, as most clearly seen in Fig. 4.
The cord or flexible element 22, which has one end attached to the gate 1, is passed over the outer side of the spool or pulley 20, and is passed over the pulley or sheave 13 so as to pass downwardly through the opening 11, a suitable weight 23 being attached to the lower or free end of the cord 22, whereby the weight 23 will normally pull the gate to closed position.
In use, the pulleys 13 and 20 reduce the wear of the rope or cord 22 to a minimum, and enable the cord to move freely when the gate is opened and closed. The pulley or spool 20 enables the gate to swing without affecting the relation of the cord 22 with the pulleys or sheaves, and when the gate is swung completely open, the cord 22 being engaged around the post 2, will cause the cord 22 to rest against the side of the gate to relieve the gate of the tendency to swing closed, inasmuch as the tension will be approximately in the plane of the gate, and not angularly relative thereto, as when the gate is partially or completely closed. When the gate is only partially opened, however, the weight 23 will return the gate to closed position, as soon as the gate is free.
The component parts of the present attachment may be readily assembled, it being noted that when the plates 4 and 7 are brought together, with the pulleys or sheaves properly positioned, the trunnions of the pulleys will be received by the bearings of the two plates, to hold the pulleys in place when the plates 4: and 7 are attached to the post. Thus, assuming the plates 4 and 7 to be separated, the rear or inner trunnion of the pulley 13 may be engaged to the bearing portion of the plate 4, and the trunnions of the pulley 20 may be seated within the notches or bearing portions 19 of the flanges 18. Then, by applying the ea or housing plate 7 to the back plate 4, the front outer trunnion of the pulley 15 will be properly engaged by the aperture or bearing of the plate 7, while the trunnions of the pulley 20 will be engaged by the notches 17. The pulleys are thus maintained in the position when the plates or parts of the case are assembled, it being an easy matter to separate the parts by simply detaching the plates 4 and 7, as will be obvious, when it is desired to clean, repair or replace the several parts.
From the foregoing, taken in connection with the drawing, the advantages and capa bilities of the present device will be obvious without further comment, it being noted, however, that the present attachment may be applied to the gate posts, or other structures in various manners, according to the circumstances.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
In a device of the character described, a case comprising two separable parts, a roller and a pulley disposed Within the case, each having trunnions the parts of the case having cooperating notched bearing portions in which the trunnions of the roller are journaled, the pulley being disposed in a plane tangential to one side of the roller, and the parts of the case having apertures in which the trunnions of the pulley are journaled.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
ALBERT BUJEWSKI.
