my W Qttoww MARION ivn cox, or oononannw MEXICO.
Ron-CLAMP. Specification of Letters Patent,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARION M.'Oox, a
of New Mexico, have invented new and use ful Improvements in Rod-Clamps, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in pipe and rod clamps or grips and has particular application to an automatic clamp or grip.
In carrying out the present invention, it is my purpose to provide'a grip or clamp whereby, in the drawing or-raising of the tubes or rods of artesian or oil well pumps, such tubes or rods will be effectively grasped and held in the desired elevated position so that a fresh grip may be obtained upon the tube or rod to complete the drawing or pulling thereof.
It is also my purpose to provide a tube orrod grip of the class described which will embrace the desired features of simplicity, efliciency, durability and strength coupled with cheapness of cost in manufacture and marketing and which may be readily applied to a pipe or rod.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter set forth in and falling within the scope of the claim.
In the accompanying drawing: Figure 1 is a plan view of a grip. constructed in accordance with the present invention, the same being shown as applied to a tube. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view through the grip, the tube being shown in elevation. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of one of the jaws.
Referring now to the accompanying drawing in detail, A designates the pump rod of an Artesian or oil well pump, while B indicates my improved clamp or grip as an entirety, such grip comprising a ring-like member formed of two sections 1, l pivotally connected to one another through the medium of a pivot pin 2 and having the free end extended outwardly as at 3 and formed with alining apertures ,4 through which is passed a headed bolt 5, having threadedly engaging the free end thereof a clamping nut 6. These sections 1, lconstituting the ring-like member are, when the grip is put into service, designed to encircle the rod or tube of the pump, as illustrated the jaws 7, 7 disposed at an inclination, incident to the Patented May 4., 1915.;

in the drawing and have the inner concaved edges thereof suitably spaced apart from the rod.
The numerals 7, 7 designate jaws each composed of a flat piece of metal having one edge concaved as at 8 and toothed or serrated as at 9. Extending outwardly from the opposite ends of each jaw 7 adjacent to the remaining edge thereof are pintles l0, 10 designed to engage eye bolts 11 carried upon-one side of one of the sections 1 of the ring-like member. It will be observed that the jaws 7, 7 are disposed at diametrically opposite points so as to grip the rod or pipe in an even and uniform manner.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, the construction, mode of operation and a manner of employing my invention will be readily apparent. When it is desired to draw or elevate the pump rod or tube, the sections of the ring-like member are swung about their pivot end so as to open the'grip and enable the latter to be applied to the rod. The sections are now drawn together through the medium of the bolt 5 and clamping nut 6 and the grip the rod, the jaws being distance between the inner wall of the ringlike member and the rod, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 2. As the pipe or tube is drawn upwardly or elevated, such pipe or tube is relieved. of the influence of .thejaws,
while when the tube is released a freshgrip may be obtained thereon, to complete the hoisting, the jaws will automatically grasp the tube and so prevent the latter from downward movement.
The teeth 9 on each jaw are formed into two rows, the teeth of each row being staggered relatively and inclined reverselyto those of the adjacent row so thatthe jaws will effectively grip the pipe or rod.
It will be noted that by having the apices of the teeth working in different radii there serrated edges of.
r caries is a neutral position where the apices of the two rows of teeth grip the rod simultaneously. The apices of one row of teeth are active on one side of this neutral position while the apices of the second row are active on the opposite side. One side of the teeth of one row is flush with one side ofthe jaw while one side of the other row of teeth is flush with the opposite side of the jaw. V
' and away I 7 Copies of this patent may be obtained for I claim:
A grip of the class described a pair of concaved Jaws movable toward rows of staggered and reversely inclined teethformed on. the confronting edges, one side of the teeth of one row being flush with one side of the jaw, one side of the teeth of the other row being flush with the opposite V 10 side offthe jaw, the said rows of teeth havfrom eachother and having two ing their respective apices operating in arcs ofdiiferent radii and active on relatively' opposite sides of a nentral position respectively.
In testimony whereof I affix my signafive cents each, by addressing the pommissioner of Patents, Washingtoml). 0.
