JAMES D. ADAMS AND AUGUST JOHNSON, 0F MONESSEN, IEENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNORS TO PITTSBURGH STEEL 00., A CORPORATION OF PENNSYLVANIA.
REEL.
dpecification of Letters Patent.
Patented May a, 1915.
Application filed November 8, 1912, Serial No. 729,845.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JAMES D. AnAMs and AUGUST G. JoHNsoN, citizens of the United States, and residents of Monessen, in the county of Westmoreland and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Reels; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
Our invention relates to reels for holding barb wire, plain wire or like material.
The object of our patent is to provide a simple form of reel in which the parts are so united as to give a very rigid, strong construction capable of withstanding the severe handling to which such reels are subjected in the winding of the wirethereon, or in shipment from one place to another.
To these ends our invention comprises the novel features hereinafter set forth and claimed.
In the accompanying drawing Figure 1 is a perspective view of our improved reel; Fig. 2 is an enlarged view of a portion of one of the end members with the tie member secured thereto looking from the outside; and Fig. 3 is an enlarged view of a portion of the end member and tie member, the end being shown in sections.
Referring to the drawing, the numeral 2 designates the end-members which are of star-shape and formed of wire of suitable gage to give the necessary strength and rigidity. The end members are preferably formed of a single piece of wire bent to the desired shape and secured at its ends by welding by electricity, or other method of welding. The end members 2 are connected by the tie-members which are U-shaped in form comprising the portions 3 and the projecting arms 4 bent at right-angles thereto and welded to the outer ends of the arms of the end-members. This Welding may be done by the well known method of electric welding or by any other suitable method. The projections 4 of the tiemembers are welded to the outer ends of the arms 5 of the end-members at a point on said projections beyond the point where the projections l unite with the connecting portions 3 of the tie-members, so that when the wire is wound upon the reel the outward pressure exerted by the wire will not all come on the projections 4, but will be partly sustained by the arms 5 of the endmembers. In this manner the strain on the projections 4 is relieved and the end-members are required to assist directly in relieving the strain on the projections 4.
By our invention weprovide a very Simple and yet eflicient form of reel in which the parts are so united as to give a very strong and rigid construction which will not collapse during the winding of the wire thereon or during shipment.
What we claim is:
A reel comprising end members each formed of a single piece of wire bent in the form ofa star, and U-shaped tie members welded to the inner 'faces of said end members at the apices of the star.
In testimony whereof, we the said JAMES D. ADAMS and AUGUST G. JOHNSON have hereunto set our hands.
JAMS D. ADAMS. AUGUST G. JOHNSON.
