SHIPPING-CASE FOR LEAD PIPE.
Application filed June 1, 1914.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Ismoun I. SHONBERG, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shipping-Cases for Lead Pipe, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make, construct, and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to numerals of reference marked thereon, forming a part of this specification.
This invention is an improvement in shipping cases, and relates more especially to devices of this character which are employed for the purpose of safely shipping coiled lead pipe and similar articles, in which extraordinary care must be taken in their handling and transportation.
The primary object of my present invention is to provide a shipping device which is strong and durable in construction, to incase the lead pipe which is provided with a very thin wall and thoroughly protect it from external injury and which may be readily and conveniently manipulated.
My invention consists of a shipping case, comprising preferably a wooden spool or reel, provided with circular heads having reduced circular portions, and a removable one-piece cover, provided with means whereby said removable one-piece cover can be securely secured or sealed to the reel or spool, preferably on the reduced portions of the circular heads.
In carrying out my invention, I make use of the structure illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents a side elevation of my improved shipping case, partly broken away, ready for shipment.
Fig. 2 represents a longitudinal section of the same, illustrating the way the lead pipe may be packed in the case.
Fig. 3 represents an end elevation, partly broken away, to illustrate the manner in which the cover or guard is secured to the case; and
Fig. it represents a perspective view of the cover or guard removed from the shipping case.
Similar numerals of reference refer to like Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 16, 1917.
Serial No. 842,056.
parts throughout the specification and drawings.
The wooden spool or reel consists essentially of three pieces, namely, the central core 1 and the two circular end heads 2 and 3, which are provided with reduced portions 4 and 5 for the reception of the cover or guard 6. The cover or guard 6, in its preferred form, is preferably made from a sin gle piece of suitable sheet material, such as sheet iron or the like, bent into tubular form, the ends of which are provided preferably with parallel flanges 7, said flanges being further provided with alined apertures 8, to receive screwthreaded bolts 9, the screw threaded ends of which are provided with nuts 10 having screw-threaded engagement therewith.
Instead of using the bolt 9 and nut 10, in some instances, I employ a wire 11, the ends of which are sealed with a lead seal 12, thereby providing a sealed shipping case,
from which the lead pipe 13 cannot be removed or injured during transportation.
In Fig. 2 of the drawings, I have shown the cover or guard 6 provided with a longitudinal corrugation 14, a number of which may be employed to impart rigidity to said cover.
Experience has demonstrated that the organization above described is a highly efficient one, and while the device shown and described is the preferred embodiment of my invention, I do not wish to be limited to the exact details of construction and combination herein shown and described, as obvious modifications thereof, not involving the exercise of invention, may be made by any one skilled in the art, and such departures from what is herein shown and described, I consider within the scope and terms of my claim.
I claim:
A shipping case for lead pipe or similar articles, comprising a reel provided with a central longitudinal core, circular end heads provided with reduced portions secured to said core, a removable circular metallic cover or guard made from a single piece of suitable material, said oover or guard designed to engage with the reduced portions of the circular heads and inclosing said reduced portions, said cover or guard being of smaller diameter than the circular end heads and fitting between the ins ide surfaces 0f 1 Thisaspeei ficaitionsigned and witnessed said end heads, and further provided With this 15th day of May, 1914.
