UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
REUBEN D. VIRT, OE INDEPENDENCE, MISSOURI.
HOSE-REEL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 486,010, dated November 8, 1892. Application tiled J'uly 6, 1892. Serial No` 439,127. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom it may concern,.-
Be it known that I, REUBEN D. WIRT, of Independence, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Hose-Reels, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention is designed as an improve- 4meut upon the hand hose-reels for which LettersPatentNos.366,909and 432,467Were granted to me on July19, 1887, and July 15, 1890, respectively, and in which a foot-rest and a handle made of gas-pipe and united by elbowcouplings were used, and in the latter of said patents running wheels or rollers independent of the reel proper were used.
The invention consists in the novel construction of such a reel or reels and in certain combinations of parts, substantially as hereinafter shown and described, and more particularly pointed out in -the claims, whereby the reel can be readily knocked down or taken apart and be boxed in a very small space for shipping at a great distance, especially adapted for export trade, thus saving freight, or whereby anumber of the reels can be stored in much less space, thereby saving warehouse room, and so that they Will not become shop-worn if carried over from one season to another.
In the drawings the invention is shown as applied to a reel having an extra pair of wheels, more particularly adapted to hosereels of large size but the invention is equally applicable to a hand hose-reel having only a single pair of Wheels, as in my patents hereinbefore referred to.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specilication, in which similar letters of reference indicato corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 represents a side elevation of a hand hose-reel embodying my invention; Fig. 2, a sectional view, on a larger scale, of the same upon the line 2 2 in Fig.1,lookingin direction of the arrowx; Fig. 3,a sectional detail view taken upon the line 3 3 in Fig. 2; Fig. 4:, a sectional view in part taken in direction of the length of the axle, and Fig. 5 a View of the hand hose-reel shown in Figs. 1 and 2 as taken apart or knocked down to facilitate shipment or storage.
A A are the arms or spokes of the reel proper, made of round iron or wire bent to form a series of horizontal bars and outwardlyprojecting opposite side bars to carry and hold the reeled hose within the latter and around or outside the horizontal bar portions. These arms or spokes are inserted at their outer ends into circular rims B B, made of bent tube or pipe and making up one pair of wheels, While the inner bent port-ions b l) of said arms or spokes tit Within arc-shaped sockets c c on the outer ends of two independent spiders C C, preferably made of malleable iron and with more 0r less spring, for which purpose the arms of said spiders are constructed of bow shape. Nuts CZ CZ on the axle or on the opposite ends of a sleeve or tube D, encircling the axle and connecting the two spiders C C together, serve on being screwed up to spring the spiders and force the outer ends of the arms or spokes A Ainto their entering-orifices in the rims B B and to further force the bent portionsb b ofthe spokes into the sockets c c of the spiders, thus making a rm and solid reel.
E E are anextra pair of Wheels of any desired pattern, on which the hose-reel may be run over the ground and which are carried by a solid axle or rod s, arranged to pass through and project from or beyond opposite ends of the sleeve or tube D. When these extra wheels E E are not used, then the Wheels or rims B B may be used for running the reel over the ground, and the axle, which may be wholly a solid one, be shortened accordingly.
G is the double-sided bent handle of the reel, Which serves to carry the reel proper in between its two sides. This handle is constructed substantially as described in my former patents, hereinbefore referred to, the same being formed of gas or` other like pipe united at its lower end by elbow-couplings e with the foot-rest H, also made of like piping and strengthened by braces 7L.
On the one spider C is a projectionf for bitching to or connecting with it the one or inner end of the hose, and g is a hook orcleat on one of the arms or spokes on the opposite side of the reel for engagement therewith of the other or outer end of the hose.
By the construction of the hand hose-reel as described the spiders C C at each end are IOf capable of being separately detached and the bent arms or spokes A A of being taken out or dismembered and the Whole readily taken apart and packed in a small space or compass, as shown in part in Fig. 5, for shipping or storage.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. In a hand hose-reel, the combination of the independent and separable spiders C' C, constructed with arc-shapedsockets c c on the outer ends of their arms, the bent arms or spokes A A of the reel, the rims B B on the outer ends of said spokes, and means, substantially as described, applied to the axial portions of the spiders for tightening np the spiders, bent arms or sockets A A, and rims B B together, as set forth.
2. In a hand hose-reel, the combination .of the independent and separable spiders C C, constructed with arc-shaped sockets c c on the outer ends of their arms, the bent arms or spokes A A of Vthe reel, the rims B B on Vthe outer ends of said spokes, an axial connection between the spiders, means, substantially as described, applied to the axial portions of the spiders for tightening up the spiders, bent arms or spokes, and'rims B B together, and the handle G, With attached foot-rest H, said spiders, bent arms or spokes, said rims conmeeting them, and the handle With its attaohed foot-rest all being separable from each other to facilitate shipping and storage, as
specified. I I Y 3. In a hand hose-reel, the combination, with the separable spiders C G, of the bent arms or spokes A A, the rims B B, the axial sleeve or tube D, the nuts d d, the solid axle or rod s, the extra Wheels E E, and the handle 4o G, with its attached foot-rest H, substantially as shown and described.
