Description

@duidt iata sind effin.
Letters Patent N o. 113,695, dated April 11, 1871.
IMPROVEMENT IN GLOVES` The ScheduIe referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
I, JOHN H. PUTMAN, of Gloversville, in the county of Fulton, in the State of New York, haveinvented certain Improvements iu Gloves and Gauntlets, of which the following is a specification.
lThe object of the invention is to produce a glove that will tit the hand and thumb more naturally than the usual make of gloves will do and It consists in the manner of cutting the glove from the skin, and the form that the parts have to iit each other and give to the glove its perfect t.
Figure l is a perspective of a glove cut and made from my new method of' cutting;
Figur 2 is a plan view ot the palm 01- inside piece of the glove slit for the fingers and the inside ot' the thumb;
Figures 3 and 4 show the back ot' the. middle ingers; and
Figure 5 is a view ofthe back o1` outside of thumbpiece.
A is the palm or inside ot' the hand-piece, and is cut ont and slit in the form seen in fig. 2, Abeing the piece cut out of' the thumb-hole and fbrming the inside of' the thumb when the glove is finished c forms the inside of the forefinger, andV c is turned back andforms the back of the same finger.
d l form the inside of the two middle fingers, and
d d form the backs of the same middle fingers.
e is the inside of the little finger, and
l e is turned around back and forms the -baek of' the finger, and, joining the edge ot' the forefinger; back piece c to the edge of' d' and the edges of' the backs of the I niddle fingers el' d together, and the edge e" of the back ofthe little finger to the edge of' d', will forni the hand part of the glove andfingers.
The piece A', which forms the inside of the thumb, is eut from the inside or palm-piece of the glove, :md is slit to have the form necessary to give to the thumb lthe propel' and natural position so much desired in a perfect-fitting glove, and is cnt lronl point :c to point a in nearly Ithe usual form, but more oblique, and at point t to a. it obliqnessmldenly on a straight or slightly-curved line, and from :z: to point a,`on the opposite side of' the thumb-piece the slit is made on a curved line' to curved point a", where the slit obliques on a curved line to point a, the terminus ofthe slit.
A small piece, 1, is cut from palm-piece A, beginning at point o and extending on a curved line to a. B is the back piece of' the thumb, cut in the form seenin fig. 5, and having angular gores or gussets project-ing from its sides, and is inserted in the opening tions in figs. 2 and 5.
The cutting the palm-piece A in order to have the inside of the thumb-piece taken from the thumb-hole upon the obliquelines, seen in g. 2, is to set the thumb over on the glove to assume a more natural position than is obtained in a out for a glove where these oblique lines are not used; and as the gloves are cut and finished for right and' left hands the ent of the thumb-hole and inside thumb-piece will of' necessity, in so far I as this Obliquity of direction is concerned, be changed to be in opposite directions in a left-hand glove from that in a right-hand one.
The ont of the thumb-hole, thumb-pieces, and finger-pieces can be applied to gauntlet-s as well asto short wrist-gloves, and the ont ofthe thumb-hole and thumb-pieces can also be applied to mittens as well as gloves and not depart from the invention.
By this cntof palm or 'hand-piece and the forming the inside of the finger' thereon, and the backs of the fore and little fingers from the same piece and the backs ofthe middle lingers formed as shown, no fou'rclwttc or pieces to form the sides of' the fingerare necessary; hence but a single seam is had between the fingers.
Having thus described my invention,
'What I claim, and desire toseenre by Letters Patent, is
'lhe glove herein described as an article of manufacture, when com posed of the parts having the form herein described.
' JOHN H. PUTMAN.
