Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr., 20, llllll.
Application filed October 27, 1911. Serial No. 657,038.
T all whom it may concern Be it known that I, Louis MAncoLrs, a
a citizen of Russia, and a resident of the borough of the Bronx, city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Corsets, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to corsets and has for its object the construction of a corset which adjusts itself to the figure and possesses durability and comfort.
There is generally a marked difference in the proportions of the female ligure in standing and in sitting positions, and the proportions are seldom the same in either position. For example, in some positions the shoulder blades are thrust out and the breasts lie low on the figure. In other positions the shoulder blades are flat and the breasts lie high on the figure. In sitting, the hips are much wider than in standing. rll`he latter stretches the corset and causes great strain and wear on the fabric of the corset at the lower ends of the stays.
My invention aims to meet each and all of the difficulties arising out of the changing proportions of the female ligure.
'Ihe corset shown is of the straight front, low cut type with long hips and stocking supporters attached, but I do not intend to be limited thereto, as my invention is adapted for use on any desired style of corset.
In the accompanying sheet of drawings which forms a part of this application, Figure l is a perspective of the front of a corset embodying my invention, and Fig. 2 is a perspective of the back thereof.
The body 1 of the corset has the usual snaps 2 at the front and lacings 3 at the back. rllhe stays 4 terminate at a distance above the bottom line of the corset. Covering the ends of the stays l and encircling the portions of the body of the corset surrounding the hips is a reinforcing strip of fabric 5 having at the front ends thereof a buckle 6 and at the back a plurality of eyelets 7 7 arranged longitudinally to thestrip, the eyelets at the extreme ends being in line with the eyelets of the regular lacing and the others extending toward the front. rllhe back ends of the strip 5 can be bifurcated as shown or any other means may be employed to give these ends the desired breadth: and the strip may preferably be cut on the bias to prevent its stretching. At the bottom of the corset are attached stocking' supporters 8. At. the top of the corset at the back on each slde is elastic material 9 9 which extends over or forms as much of that portion of the corset as is desired. At the front of the corset on each side and in a position to form supports for the whole or a part of the breasts as desired, is elastic material 10 l0.
In use, as the corset becomes stretched at the bottom from walking or sitting or from any other cause the lacing ischangcd from the eyelets at the extreme ends of the reinforcing strip 5 as shown in Fig. 2, and advanced to the eyelets toward the front of the strip. The ends of the stays where the wear is great being covered by this strip adds much to the durability and life of the corset. As will be readily understood, it is not necessary to use the same laces or means of fastening as is employed for the back of the corset. It is obvious that this feature of my invention is adapted for use in reducing the size of the hips, as well as in taking up stretch, and such use is contemplated by me. The elastic material at the top of the corset at the back and at the front prevents the corset from projecting from the figure in any position that the wearer may assume and from causing thereby an unsightly appearance of and wear on the outer garments. It also affords great comfort and ease in wearing.
It is to be understood that I do not desire to be limited to the exact details shown and described, for obvious modifications will occur to those skilled in the art.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
1. The combination in a corset of a corset body, stays fastened therein and terminating at a distance from the bottom thereof, and a reinforcing strip covering the lower ends of said stays at the outside thereof, and encircling the portions of the corset body surrounding the hips, substantially as described.
2. The combination in a skirted corset of a corset body, stays fastened therein and terminating at a distance from the bottom thereof, and a reinforcing strip covering the lower ends of said stays at the outside thereof and encircling the portions of the corset body surroundingthe hips, and stocking supporters, substantiallyas described.
3. The combination in a skirted corset of a corset body, stays fastened therein and terminating at a distance from the bottom thereof, and a reinforcing strip covering the loWer ends of said stays at the outside thereof, the reinforcing strip being provided With means for lacing in conjunction with the lacing means at the back of the corset, substantially as' described.
el. The combination in a corset of a corset body, stays fastened therein and terminating at a distance from the bottom thereof, and a reinforcing strip covering the lower ends of said stays at the outside thereof, the reinforcing strip encircling `the portions' of the corset body surrounding the hips and being -provided With a plurality of eyelets arranged longitudinally therein,
substantially as described.
