NAIL-FULLER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 13, 1915..
Application filed April 13, 1914. Serial No. 831,415.
a citizen of the United States, residing at Portland, in the county of Multnomah and State of Oregon, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Nail Plullers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to nail pullers, and has for its object to provide a nail puller of the form possessing jaws adapted to be set tled over the head of a nail and to grip same for the purpose of withdrawing it from the object in which it is driven.
It has for its object to provide in such a device means for the jaws to bite upon the body of the nail and to lock them in closed position, I accomplish this object by means of the structure shown in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved nail puller, showing the aws in open position ready to be engaged upon a nail. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the jaws closed and looked upon a nail. Fig. 3 is a bottom end view of the driver, showing the eccentrically formed locking element. Fig. 1 is a front elevation of the two jaws.
Describing the drawing in detail, 1 designates the shank of the usual nail puller, having at its upper end the usual handle 2, secured in place by means of the pin 3. Near the lower end of the shank 1 is an enlargement forming the annular shoulder 7, and this enlarged portion is shaped to form one of the jaws 14 of the nail puller, which is reduced at 11 to form a biting terminal adapted to cut into the material holding the nail; and an aperture 12 adapted to receive the pivot pin 12 is formed transversely in the base of the jaw. A coacting movable jaw 15 having an aperture 12 registering with that of jaw 14 is mounted on the pin 12*, and its terminal has a somewhat extended reduction as at 9 to adapt it to move readily into the wood.
Extending from jaw 15, transversely with reference to shank 1, is a foot-piece 10, adapted to rest upon the object containing the nail when the jaws are in position to be set over the head of the nail. Rising from the opposite side of jaw 15 is an arm 8, which, when the jaws are in the position last above described, will stand against the enlarged end portion of the shank; and it rises a considerable distance above said enlarged portion.
Upon shank 1, between the handle 2 and the shoulder 7 is slidably secured the driver 4, from the lower end of which is an extension 5 equal in diameter with shoulder 7, and slightly longer than the portion of the arm 8 above the'shoulder 7. By means of this structure, when the driver is operated to settle the jaws upon the nail 18 the extension 5 is free to engage the shoulder 7, and it will at the same time sustain the driver above the arm 8.
From the foregoing description it is clear that the jaws may be settled over the nail head in the usual manner, by a few blows from the driver 4. Then by rotating the driver a half turn and striking a sudden V blow the beveled surface 6* of the lateral extension 6 formed on the projection 5 of the driver, will engage the arm 8, rocking the jaws on their pivot 12 causing them to bite upon the body of the nail 13. The upper parallel portion 6 will thus be brought to bear against the arm 8, which will cause the jaws to retain their hold upon the nail, as the puller is rocked upon the foot-piece 10, as a fulcrum, to withdraw the nail.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. A nail puller comprising a shank having an annular shoulder near its lower end which portion terminates in a nail-gripping jaw, a coacting jaw having a laterally projecting fulcrum-piece pivotally secured thereto, an arm rising from the pivoted aw above said shoulder, a driving member slidably mounted on said shank, an extension leading therefrom adapted to engage said shoulder and to sustain the driver above said arm, and an upwardly beveled eccentric portion formed on the extension from said driver, which, by manipulation of i the driver, will engage said arm to rock the aws on their pivot to cause them to bite together.
2. A nail puller comprising a shank having a lower end which terminates in a nailgripping jaw, a coacting jaw pivotally secured thereto, an arm rising from the pivoted jaw, a driving member slidably mounted on said shank, an extension leading therefrom and having an upwardly beveled portion, which, by manipulation of the driver will engage said arm to rock the jaws on r their pivot to cause them to bite together.
'3. 'A nail puller comprising'a shank havinga lower end which terminates inainailgripping jaw, a coacting jaw pivotally secured thereto, an arm rising fromthe pivgripp ng jaw, a coa'cting jaw pivotally se- Jote'd jaw, a driving member slidably mounted on said shank, an extension leading "downwardly therefrom and having an upwardly beveled portion, which, by manipu-' lation of the driver will engage said arm to.
rock the jaws on their pivot to cause them to bite together. 7
4. A nail puller comprising a shank having alowerend which terminates in a nailcured thereto, an arm rising from the pivoted jaw, a driving member slidably mounted Copies of this patent may be obtained for the driver will engage said arm to rock the jaws on their pivot to cause them to bite together.
5. A nail puller comprising a shank having a lower end which terminates in a nailgripping jaw, a coacting jaw pivotally secured thereto, an arm rising from the pivoted jaw, a driving member slidably mounted on said shank, an extension leading downwardly therefrom and having an upwardly beveled eccentric portion, which, by manipulation of the driver will engage said arm to rock the jaws on their pivot to cause them to bite together.
In testimony whereof'l afiix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
