UNKTED JACKSON LYNES, OF WABSAVJ, MISSOURI.
STOVEPIPE-I-IOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 3%, 1915.
Application filed June 10, 1914. Serial No. 844,347.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JACKSON Burns, a citizen of the United States, residing at VVarsaw, in the county of Benton and State of Missouri, have invented new and useful Improvements in Stovepipe-Holders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in stove pipes, and has particular reference to a stove pipe holder whereby the pipe is firmly supported with respect to the chimnev.
In carrying out my invention I aim to provide a stove pipe holder, which is so associated with the pipe as to permit of sliding and tilting movements respectively, with a view of facilitating the operation of connecting the pipe with the chimney, together with the provision of a common means for limiting the sliding and tilting movements, as well as looking the holder in operative position.
Other objects of the invention will appear as the following description is read in connection with the accompanying drawing, wherein like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views, and in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation partly in section showing my holder in operative position, the dotted lines indicating the inoperative position of the same. Fig. 2 is a top plan view. Fig. 3 is an enlarged transverse sectional view. Fig. 4 is a detail view of the guiding element.
Referring more particularly to the drawing 5 designates the chimney having the usual pipe opening 6 therein, in which is arranged the thimble 7 for the reception of the pipe section .8. The pipe section as shown in this particular instance is provided with a longitudinal slot 9 for the reception of the guiding element 10.
The guiding element comprises a single piece of material having its marginal edges secured by means of the screws 11, or in any other suitable manner to the outer and upper surface of the pipe, while the central portion of the material is formed with a guide groove 12 extended Within the pipe through the slot 9 and coextensive therewith. l/Vhile the groove may be of any desired contour, it is preferably made V- shaped for the reception of the triangular shaped locking bar 18 whereby turning of the latter within the groove is obviated. The locking bar 13 is arranged for sliding adjustment within the groove 12 and through the pipe opening 6 of the chimney.
Passed through the bar 13 and carried thereby for engagement with the walls of the groove 12 is a thumb screw 14 by means of which the bar is secured in operative position. One end of the bar 13 is formed with an angularly disposed chimney breast engaging portion 15 which when locked in the position shown in Fig. 1 rigidly supports the pipe 8 operatively associated with the chimney.
To put up a pipe with my improved holder, you first loosen the thumb screw 14 and slide the bar 13 rearwardly through the pipe and groove 12, until the thumb screw is brought near the inner end of the slot 9. When in this position, the bar and the breast engaging portion 15 of the bar may be tilted below the upper surface of the pipe to permit insertion of the latter within the flue opening, it being observed that this tilting movement of the bar is also limited by means of the thumb screw 14 contacting the inner end of the slot. After the pipe has been properly positioned within the opening of the chimney, the bar 13 is tilted to a horizontal position and moved forwardly through the pipe 8 and groove 12 thus bringing the angular terminal 15 into engagement with the breast of the chimney and the forward end of the bar 13 beneath the marginal portion of the forward end of the guiding element 10. The bar and pipe 8 are then locked in this position by means of the thumb screw 14.
It will thus be manifest, that in addition to locking the bar in operative position, the thumb screw 14 provides a single means for limiting both the sliding and tilting movements respectively of the bar 13.
While I have shown and described what I now consider the preferred form of my invention, I desire to have it understood that the same is merely illustrative and that I do not limit myself to the precise constructlon disclosed, as various changes both in the construction and arrangement of parts may be resorted to when desired as fall within the scope of the appended claim, w1thout dearting from the spirit of my invention.
What I claim is L4 The combination with a pipe having a longitudinal slot therein, of a guiding elesliding and tilting movements thereof and 10 ment comprising a single piece of material for fastening the same in operative position. having its marginal edges secured to the In testimony whereof I afiix my signature exterior of the pipe and formed With a in presence of tWo Witnesses. grooved portion extending Within the pipe and through said slot, a locking bar ary JACKSON LYNES ranged in the groove for sliding and tilting Witnesses:
