WIEIEDING- IMPLEMENT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 3(1 1915.
Application filed January 22, 1914. Serial No. 813,692.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ARTHUR A. V\ 71RT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Omaha, in the county of Douglas and State the implement.
The invention consists of the novel conof Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Weeding Implements, of which the following is a specifis cation. I
This invention relates to a weeding implement, and has for its object to provide a device consisting of few and simple parts so that manufacture thereof may be economical, and durability may be attained.
It also has reference to the mounting of certain metallic parts upon a handle in such a manner that the parts will remain firmly connected regardless of shrinkage or the stresses and strains incident to the use of struction, combination and arrangement of parts as described herein and claimed and as illustrated in the drawing, wherein,-
Figure 1 is a. side view of the implement, the handle being broken away, a part of the collar and handle being in section. Fig. 2 shows a front view of the blade, the handle being broken away. Figs. 3 and 4 are side views of the implement. Fig. 5 is an end view of the lmplement. Fig. 6 is a side view of a part of the handle to clearly show the formation of a slot having an enlarged in-, ner part or recess.
Referring now to the drawing for a more particular description, the implement con-' sists, in part, of an elongatedvhandle 7 having a slot 8 formed therein and longitudinally thereof to open upon one of its terminals, said slot having an enlarged inner part or recess 9; the handle is also provided with an aperture 10 disposed adjacent to and substantially at right angles to the slot;
I provide a metallic strip and bend it longitudinally between its ends to provide parallel adjacent portions a and b for a rectilinear tang having an enlarged terminal part or head 13 and providing a blade 11 and a hook 12. Since the enlarged part of the tang has a greater thickness than the combined thickness of portions a and?) and is adapted to fill the enlarged part of the slot or recess 9, substantially, when disposed therein, it will be noted that this mounting portions a and b, by a movement transversely of the handle, have been inserted in the recess and slot, the collar may be moved outwardly to the end of the handle so that it will circumscribe the recess and slot and will provide a covering for the edges of the metal therein. The blade, preferably, is disposed parallel with the longitudinal axis of the handle and is provided at its free end with a convergent cutting-edge c. The hook is disposed at a suitable angle with reference to thew-blade, and its terminal is provided, with a claw or outwardly curved teeth (1.
At 15 is indicated a brace, its outer end being bent to traverse apertures e and f of the hook for a mounting thereon, its inner end being bent to provide a rectilinear portion 9 adapted to be disposed at right angles to the handle while disposed in aperture 10.
The brace, intermediate its ends, is bent outwardly to form a loop. buffer or head 71. for use so that the rectilinear part 9 may be driven through the-aperture 10, as by use of a hammer or similar implement (not shown); and the brace near its inner terminal, preferably, is bent outwardly to provide a detent k to lie against the inner end and prevent a movement of the collar inwardly of the handle. A movement of the collar outwardly of the handle will be prevented by reason of engagement of the lug or inwardly curved part m ofthe brace with .the proiection or annularridge n formed,
preferably, upon and near its terminal. On account of shrinkage of the handle which may. occur. this preferably being constructed of wood. it is desirable to provide such a mounting for the collar that a movement thereof. in either direction, longitudinally from lawns. While the handle is supported inclinedly, in the position shown in Fig. 3, the blade may be easily thrust into the ground, and by twisting the handle slightly, the soil will be loosened sufliciently so that, by use of the hook, while the implement is disposed in the position shown in Fig. 4, weeds may be quickly removed;
Having fully described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure. by Letters Patent is,-
1. In devices for the purpose described, an elongated handle provided at one of its ends with a recess having an enlarged inner part, a metallic strip bent longitudinally between its ends too provide a rectilinear tang having an enlarged terminal part, a blade disposed substantially parallel with the tang and a hook disposed in angular relation to the blade, said strip being adapted to be disposed with its tang engaging in said recess, the enlarged part of the tang engaging in the enlarged part of said recess, said blade being disposed substantially parallel with the longitudinal axis of the handle, and a collar circumscribing the handle and providing a cover for the edges of the tang.
2. The combination of an elongated handle provided at one of its ends with a recess having an enlarged inner part, a metallic strip bent longitudinally between its ends to provide a rectilinear tang having an enlarged terminal part, a blade disposed substantially parallel with the tang and a hook disposed in angular relation to the blade, said strip being adapted to be disposed with its tang engaging in said 'recess, the enlarged part of the tang engaging in the enlarged part of the recess, the blade be ing disposed substantially parallel with the longitudinal axis of the handle, a collar circumscribing the handle, a brace engaging the hook and traversing the handle for preventing a movement of the collar inwardly of said handle, and coacting devices upon the .collar and brace for preventing a movement of said collar outwardly of the handle.
3. The combination of an elongated hane dle provided at one of its terminals with a recess having an enlarged inner part, a metallic strip bent longitudinally between its ends to provide a tang having an enlarged terminal part, a blade, and a hook disposed in angular relation to the blade, said strip being adapted to be disposed with its tang and the enlarged part of the tang engaging, respectively, in the recess and in the enlarged part of said recess, and a collar mounted on the handle to overhang the edges of the tang.
4. The combination of an elongated handle provided at one of its terminals with a recess having an enlarged innerpart, a metallic strip bent longitudinally between its ends to provide a tang having an enlarged terminal part, a blade, and a hook disposed in angular relation to the blade, said strip being adapted tobe disposed with its tang and the enlarged part of the tang engagingrespectively in the recess and in'the enlarged part of said recess, a collar mounted on the handle tocircumscribe thetang, a brace engaging the hook and traversing the handle for preventing a movement of the collar inwardly of said handle, and coacting devices upon said collar and brace for'preventing a movement of said collar outwardly of the handle.
In testimony whereof I- have affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
