rename-KNIFE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 10, 1912.
Application filed November 3, 1911. Serial No. 658,329.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILSON SoroNnAUX, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Lagan, in the parish of St. James and State of Louisiana, have invented a new and Improved Pruning-Knife, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to a new and im proved form of pruning knife, and is particularly adapted to be used as a briar hook on the edge of a bank of a ditch, to out and at the same time raise the grass from the bottom of the ditch.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both views, and in which- Figure 1' is a side elevation of a preferred embodiment of my invention, showing the handle portion broken off, for convenience; and Fig. 2 is a transverse section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1, looking in the direction of the arrow.
The blade A is of a general fiat construction, the rear 3 of which is straight, and the forward end of which is formed into a wide curve 4, terminating to form with the cutting edge, a point 5. The cutting edge 6, extending from the end of the handle B to the point 5, is in the form of a compound curve, in which the portion 7 adjacent the handle B is practically straight, being slightly convexcd, while the portion 8 adjacent the point 5 is decidedly concave. This concave portion adjacent the point 5 permits the cut grass and brush to be raised out of the ditch by a quick movement at the end of the cutting stroke.
The blade is inserted in a kerf 9 at the end of the handle B, and is fastened thereto by any suitable number of rivets 10. To protect the handle from splitting, a substantially U-shaped shield 11 is placed about the outside of the end of the handle adjacent the cutting edge 6, and extending along the handle a distance greater than the depth of the kerf. A portion of each side of the shield 11 adjacent the blade is extended along each side of the handle for some material distance, to form a broadened portion 12, through which broadened portion and through the handle and blade is passed a fastening rivet 13.
The handle B is cut away on the side .opposite the cutting edge of the blade A, thereby positioning the hand of the user in line with the cutting edge, to minimize the possibility of the instrument turning in the operators hand.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire .to secure by Letters Patent A knife of the character prising a handle having a fiat end and provided in said end with a kerf extending in the direction of the width of said end, a flat blade having a curved cutting edge and an unreduced heel end, the said heel end being approximately the same width as the handle and fitting in the kerf thereof, a U- shaped shield fitting upon the lower edge of the end of the handle, the shield being of a length greater than the depth of the kerf and having its sides broadened at the forward end, and fastening devices passing through the handle and blade, one of the said fastening devices also passing through the shield.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WILSON SOIONEAUX.
