Description

E L. mom. PUSH HOE.
APPLICATION FILED SEPT. 25' I916- 1,231,01 2. Patented J u ne 26, 1917.
awuwwboz I EL-GLOVER EDWIN L. GLOVER, or JAcKsoiv, MISSISSIPPI.
PUSH-HOE.
Application filed September 25, 1916.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWIN L. GLovnR, a citizen of the United States, residing at- Jackson, in the county of Hinds and State of Mississippi, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Push-Hoes, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain improvements in push hoes and it is an object of the invention to provide a novel and improved device of this general character which may be operated with convenience and faclllty and wherein the parts are so related as to prevent sidewise movement of the cutting blade as the same is pushed forward.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved hoe whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device is rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, all as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of the invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure 1 is a view in elevation illustrating a push hoe constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention, the operating handle being shown in fragment;
Fig. 2 is a side elevational view of my improved hoe, as herein included, the handle being also shown in fragment; and
Fig. 3 is a view in perspective of my improved push hoe, the operating handle being omitted.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawings, 1 denotes a cutting blade substantially flat in cross section and disposed longitudinally in a direction oblique to the operating handle H. Said cutting blade 1 is also disposed transversely on a predetermined angle relative to the handle H so that the cutting edge of said blade will be caused to effec- Specification of Letters Patent. Patented J 11116 26, 1917.

tively engage the plants with which the same may be employed.
The opposite extremities of the blade 1 are provided with the rearwardly directed arms 2 and 3, the arm 2 being substantially per- .pendicular to the blade 1 while the arm 3 is disposed in a direction toward the arm 2 and arranged on an angle of about 45 relative to the blade 1. It is also to be noted that the arms 2 and 3 are in alinement with the back edge of the blade 1 so that the arms will not offer resistance to the hoeing opera tion especially when the device is employed in connection with tall grass or weeds.
The outer portions of the arms 2 and 3 are disposed on a predetermined curvature as indicated at 4: and terminate in the inwardly directed extensions 5, and said extensions 5 are continued by the connected portions 6 which afford a shank S which is adapted to be inserted within the lower end of the handle H. The connected portions 6 are preferably welded one to the other. Y
It is also to be noted that the shank S is positioned to one side, preferably to the left, of the longitudinal center of the blade 1 so that as the hoe is pushed the possibility of the blade sliding longitudinally or in a. direction angular to the handle H is substantially eliminated.
From the foregoing description, it is thought to be obvious that a hoe constructed in accordance with my invention is of an eX- tremely simple and comparatively inexpensive nature and is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled, and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without material departure from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of'the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice, eX- cept as hereinafter claimed.
I claim:
A push hoe comprising a blade, arms ex tending rearwardly from the blade at opposite sides thereof, one of said arms being substantially perpendicularly related to the said arms having a lateral bend intermediate blade While the second arm is inclined totheir ends. 10 Ward the first named arm, the extremities In testimony whereof I hereunto afiix my of said arms being eonneeted to afford a signature in the preseneeof two witnesses. shank, said shank being positionedftq" one a 'EDVVINL. GLQVER. 7 side of the longitudinal center of the blade Witnesses: and said blade being obliquely disposed rela- B. A. lVlpC n, tive to the longitudinal aXis' ()f' the shank, M. B; GLoVEii;
