Specication of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 23, 1915.
Application led December 6, 1913. Serial No. 805,100.
T aZZ '1c/fom it may concern.'
lle it known that I, MARY J. CHEnsnarAN, a citizen of the United States, res1d1ng at New York, in the county of New York and State ot' New York, have invented new and useful Improvements iu Washhoilers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to wash boilers, und particularly to a clothes draining device therefor which mav bc made in the nature of a cm er for the boiler and designed whereby it may be arranged and supported upon the boiler in a position which will permit the clothes taken from the boiler to be placed upon the cover and stacked or supported pendino the operation of finally wringing the cllothes, and further the construction of the cover whereby the water draining from the clothes may be properly conducted back to the boiler.
It is a further object of the invention to provide a boiler of this character in which the cover thereof may be efectually used as a means for carrying clothes when taken from the boiler.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character wherein means will be em loyed to prevent the discharge opening o the cover from being accidentally closed by any congested condition of the clothes around the opening.
lVith these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features ot construction, combination and arran ement of parts, as will be hereinafter escribi-d and (-luiiucd.
In the aeompanying drawingsz-Figure 1 is a perspective view ot' the boiler; Fig. 2 is a similar view, showing the cover inverted und arranged upon the boiler so as to operatively receive und sup )ort the clothes; Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectlon through the boiler and through the cover, showing the latter inverted to support the clothes; and Fig. 4 is a section through a portion of the cover showine the guard above the drain opening.
The boiler comprises a main body or receptacle 1, which may be of any suitable well known construction and designed so that the cover 2 may be removably fitted thereto and adjusted to a position other than the closing position over the upper open end of the boiler for a urpose to be hereinafter fully explained. 'libe boiler has its receptacle 1 provided at its ends with suitable lifting handles 3.
The cover is provided with a crown 4 having a vdependa .flange 5 adapted to engage within the walls of the rece tacle 1 and a lateral fiange 6, which is a apted to overhang the upper edge of the receptacle 1 when the closure is applied in the usual manner, so as to entirel cover the boiler during the operation of oiling the clothes. Along one side the crown 4 is provided with a longitudinally arranged extension or shoulder 7 which is adapted to overhang the adjacent end of the boiler when the cover is inverted and arranged upon the boiler so as to form a container for the clothes. The cover, in order that it may accommodate the maximum quantity of clothes, is formed with an u struck ortion 7 including a relatively eep vertical wall 8 at one side `and an inclined wall 9, the latter being carved transversely and gradually merged along its marginal surfaces into the crown 4 of the cover and is preferably provided with parallel sides 10 at its juncture with the crown which are adapted to acommodate themselves to the adjacent parallel sides of the receptacle l, while at 11 said wall 9 .is given the required curvature so that it may properly conform with the like curvature at the adjacent end of the boiler. This latter arrangement is also desirable in order that the said extension 7 of the crown of the cover may be extended or arran ed to overlie the adjacent u per edge of t e boiler, as will be understood).
By constructing the cover in this manner the intermediate portion thereof is designed to form a container or well into which the clothes may be placed after they are taken from the boiler. The peculiar inclination of the wall 9 and the described manner of extending said wall into the wall 8 or vertical portion of the cover is such that the extreme lower end 13 of the container or well 12 1s disposed approximately over the center of the receptacle 1. The water draining from the clothes necessarily accumulates at the lower end of the well through this construction, and said water is adapted to pass into the boiler through a discharge passage 14 in the wall 8. The passage 14 is preferabl. threaded to adjustably accommodate a sea mg plug 15 which may be removed when the cover is inverted for the purpose specified and which may also be adjusted to seal the opening 14 when the cover iS used for the ordinary urpose of closing the upper end of the boi er during the operation of boiling the clothes.
'l`lie inclination of the wall ll would necessarily cause an objectionable accumulation of the clothes at the lower end of the well 12, which is defined by the' wall 9 and the wall 8 and to prevent. such accumulation from interfering with a proper discharge of the drain water into the boiler I provide a longitudinally curved guard 16 secured to the wall 8 and arranged so as to overhang the opening 14. The cover is provided near its ends with handles A by means of which thc cover and the clothes thereon may be conveniently carried from place to place during the wringing and rinsing operation. The plug 15 is provided with a small chain 1T secured at one of its ends to the wall 8 and adapted to prevent accidental loss of the plug, as will be understood.
1" rom the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various c ianges in the form, proportion and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention as claimed.
I claim In a device of the class described, a flanged cover outstruck at a point intermediate of its ends to provide a receptacle, said receptacle including a vertically disposed straight wall formed integral with and terminating from the flange of the memberand an inclinid wall formed integral with and terminating from the flange at a point opposite to the first named wall` the inclined wall incliningl downwardly from the upper edge of the vertical wall and terininatin short of the opposite edge of the cover, tio vertical wall at a oint adjacent its intersection with the inc ined wall being provided with a drain opening, and a longitudinally curved uard overhanging the openin and secure to the inner surface of sai vertical wall at a point adjacent to said drain opening and in spaced superposed relation with the inclined wall.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
Mns. MARY J. GHEESENIAN.
Witnesses Mrs. Gnonoa S. Wann, GAnNE'i'r V. Wann.
