To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CHARLES B. HANNA, a citizen'v of the United yStates, residing at St. Louis and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Self-Sealing Burial Vaults; and do hereby declare the following to bea full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. y

My invention has for its object to provide a self sealing burial vault, and to this end, it consists of the novel devices and combinations of devices hereinafter described and defined in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate the invention, like characters indic-ate like parts throughout the several views.

The improved burial vault comprises a box 5 and a cover 6, both of which are formed from sheet steel, the joints at the corners thereof being tightly closed by weldingor other suitable means. The sides and end walls of the box 5 are reinforced by pressing the same outward to afford upper, lower and intermediate longitudinal ribs 7. Casket-supporting flanges 8 are formed on the bottom of the box 5 by transversely pressing the same upward. Formed with the cover 6 is an endless depending flange 9 adapted to cap the box 5 and rest on a supporting ledge 10 formed on the upper edge of the upper reinforcing rib 7. The cover 6 is reinforced by pressing the same upward to afford an endless rib 11.

Referring now to the self sealing feature of the invention, there is secured to the Yunder side of the cover 6 a multiplicity of depending brackets 12 having pockets 13. |These brackets 12 are welded or otherwise rigidly secured to the cover 6 and arranged to slide into the box 5 in close contact with the sides and ends thereof. The pockets 13 V12 and the bottoms thereofare inclined ,to-

ward said outer ends. It will be notedthat the outer endsof the brackets 12, below the pockets 13, are inwardly and downwardly curvedV so that when the cover 6 is applied to the box 5 said brackets will readily slide into the box 5. Just before the cover 6 is applied to the box 5, the pockets 13 are lled with tow or waste saturated with a liquid or plastic iron cement indicated as an entirety by the'letter Z.y

The tow or waste will hold the cement while when seated on the ledge 10, affords aV tight I joint between the box 5and cover 6. Preferably, the entire burial vault will'` be and also greatly increase its life. By. constructing the burial vault of sheet steel, it

makes the same comparatively` light and easy to handle or ship. The upper reinforcing rib 7 keeps the upper portion of the box 5 in true form so that thel capping flange 9 will tightly fit thereon and seat on the ledge 10. l

What I claim is:

1. The combination with a box, of a cover having a pocket slidable into the box in close contact therewith, said" pocket being.v arranged to receive a plastic cement adapted to run into contact with the box and harden after the cover is applied. Y

2. Thecombination with a box having in its inner wall a recess, of a cover having a pocket slidable into the box in close'contact therewith at said recess, said pocket being arranged to receive a plastic cement adapted enameled to'improve the appearance thereof Y to run into contact with the box and recess ranged to receive a plastic cement adapted to run into contact with the box and rib and harden after the cover is applied. The combination with a box having an v outwardly pressed reinforcing rib, of a cover having a flange capping the boX and supported on said rib, a cover having a pocket slidable into the box in close contact therewith, said pocket being arranged to receive a plastic cement adapted4 to run into Contact with the box and rib and harden after the cover is applied.

5. The combination with a box, of a cover having on its under side a pocketed bracketslidable into the box in close Contact therewith, said pocket being arranged to receive a plastic cement adapted to run into Contact with the box and harden after the cover is applied.

6. The combination with a box, of a cover having on its underside a multiplicity of pocketed brackets slidable into the box in close contact with the sides and ends thereof, said pocketed brackets being arranged to receive a plastic cement adapted to run into contact With the boX and harden after the coverl is applied.
