REGEPTACLE.
specification of Letters Patent. Patented Blair. 15, 1921.
Application filed November 12, 1920. Serial No. 423,514..
To all whom 2'25 may concern Be it known that l, l /IARTIN L. WAGNnn, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of hlorristown, in the county of Montgomery, State of Pennsylvania, have in- "rented certain new and useful Improvements in Receptacles, of which the following is specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates particularly to that class of receptacles which includes ice cream cans or containers for milk and such liquids, in which it is highly essential that absolute cleanliness be maintained.
The principal object of my invention is to provide a sanitary can or receptacle in which the bottom or end wall is so joined to the side walls as to avoid any abrupt angles or corners which might afford crevices in which the fluid contained therein may collect or be secreted.
Other objects of my invention are to provide a can or receptacle which may have its bottom or end wall joined to the side walls and afford a tight joint irrespective of any accidental or unavoidable inequalities in the contour of said side walls.
My invention further comprehends the method of forming a sealed joint between the end and side walls of a can or receptacle which consists essentially in providing said end wall with a flange and a feather edge, forcing said end wall into said side walls with the feather edge engaging the end of said side walls so as to be turned back wardly thereby into parallel relation with said flange and said side walls, thereby afford a filler to form a tight joint.
The form of my invention as hereinafter described, comprises a receptacle having side walls forming a shell and an end wall provided with a flange, and having a feather edge extended beyond said flange at the intersecticn of said end wall with said flange, and arranged to be turned backwardly in parallel relation with said flange upon being entered into said shell.
My invention further includes all of the various novel features of construction and arrangement as hereinafter more definitely specified.
In the accompanying drawings; Figure 1 is a vertical fragmentary sectional view showing the lower portion of a can or receptacle conveniently embodying my inveir tion; Fig. 2 is a central vertical sectional view of the bottom or end. wall of said can or receptacle as it appears before being forced into the shell; Fig. 3 is a central vertical fragmentary sectional view on an enlarged scale, showing the bottom or end wall in position to be inserted by force into the shell; andFig. 4 is a central vertical fragmentary sectionalview on an enlarged scale showing the bottom or end wall forced into engagement with the side walls of the shell.
In said figures, the cam comprises the shell 1 forming the side walls which may preferably be cylindriform, and the bottom or end wall 2, which may preferably be concave, as shown, with its margin formed into the cylindrical flange 3 at the intersection with which it is formed into a feather edge 5 extended laterally beyond the flange 3 and arranged to be turned backwardly as shown in Figs. 1 and 4 to provide a filler arranged to afford an absolutely tight joint between. the peripheral edge of said bottom or end wall and the inner surface of the side walls of the shell 1.
The turning over of said feather edge 5 to form said filler may be best effected by placing the feather edge 5 against the end of the walls of the shell 1, as shown in Fig. 3, and then exerting pressure to force the bottom or end wall into the side walls forming the shell 1 whereby said feather edge 5 being engaged with the end of the walls of the shell 1 naturally turns backwardly and is upset against the outer surface of the flange 3 in parallel relation therewith, and as best shown in Fig. t forms a filler be tween said flange and the inner surface of the walls of the shell 1.
My invention is advantageous in that by turning back the feather edge as herein contemplated, any space between the inner sur face of the side walls of the shell 1 and the outer surface of the flange 3 may be filled by the filler formed by the turned-back or upset feather edge 5, thus affording a tight joint between the side walls of the shell 1 and the bottom or end wall 2 of the receptacle, which may be welded when in place to prevent accidental displacement.
do not desire to limit my invention to the precise details of construction and arrangenient as herein set forth, as it is ob vious that various modifications may be made therein without departing; from the essential features of my invention as defined in the appended claims.
H axing thus described my invention, I claime- 1. A receptacle having side walls and an end wall provided. with a flange arranged to it within said side walls and having a teather edge formed to extend beyond said flange at the intersection oi? said fia-ngi e and said end wall, and arranged to he turned parallel with said flange when, said end wall is inserted within said side walls to provide a filler and afford a tight joint.
A receptacle having side walls and a concave end wall provided with a flange arranged to fit within said side walls, and having! a feather edge formed to extend beyond said flange at the intersection of said flange and said end wall, and. arranged to be turned parallel with said flange when said end wall is inserted within said side walls to provide a filler and afford a tight joint.
3. The method of forming receptacle \.e and end walls which consists in V the end wall with a flange arranged to lit within the side walls and forming a feather edge extended laterally beyond said flange at the intersection oii said end wall and its flange, and fencing said end *all inte said side walls with the feather edg 'e en sing the end oil said side walls as to he turned baelnvardiy thereby in pan allel relation with the flange between the side walls and said flange to afford a, tight joint.
in witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand this 8th day of November. A. I). 1920.
