METAL CONTAINER.
Application fiIed January 11, 1926. Serial No. 80,436.
This invention relates to metal containers in which dry, liquid or semi-liquid materials are shipped, and it pertains particularly-to the manner of tightening andlocking to the head of the container a removable lid or cover.
Theprincipal object of the inventionis to provide an effective but inexpensive looking and tightening means for the removable cover, and one which will permit the easy and quick application or removal of the cover. 1
The invention, may be brieflysummarized as consisting in certain'novel details of construction, and combinationsand arrange ments of parts which 'will be described 'in the specification and set forth fin the -appended claims.
In the accompanying Sheet of drawings wherein I have shown the preferredembodiment of the invention, Fig. 1 is a vertical sectional view through the upper portion of the container; FigJ-Qis a top plan view; Fig. 3 is an enlarged fragmentary plan view partly in section, substantially along the lines 3-3 of Fig. 1; and Fig. 1 is a detail sectional view substantially along the line .h4 of Fig. 3.
Referring now to the drawings, 10 represents the body of the container, which, as well as the other parts are formed of sheet metal, and which may have any desired shape and construction. Thebody will be provided with a suitable bottom, and with a head 11, which is generally inset or depressed to form a chime, the bottom being preferably similarly formed.
The head is provided with an annular opening 12 to accommodate the removable head or cover 13, the opening in this instance being off center or eccentric with respect to the axis of the container. Around the opening 12, the metal of the head is turned inwardly or downwardly to form a flange 14', which serves the double function of forming a suitable seat for the cover and of giving added strength to the head.
The cover 13 is provided with an inset or depressed portion of annular form, which is received with a substantially close fit in the down-turned flange 14: of the head and it is provided with an annular horizontal flange 16 which overlies the fiat portion of the head outside or beyond the down-turned flange 14, and is adapted to engage and clampdown against the head an annular gasket 17. Secured to and extending up through the head at equally spaced points just outside of the down-turnedflange 14 are a series of headed locking pins prefei ably in the form of rivets 18, each provided with a body portion of predetermined diameter extending up above thccover and a somewhat larger head 18, the heads of the rivets being spaced a predetermined dis tance from the top surface of the container; The cover 13 is provided in the horizontal peripheral'flange 14 thereof, with arc-shaped slots 19, equal in numberand spacing to the rivets 18, each slot having an enlargedpon 13101119, large enough so that it can be i fitted down over the head of a rivet 1 8, and
a narrower portion of alsizeto just accommodate the body portion of the rivet when the cover is placed down on the head and over the rivets and then turned;
To facilitate the turning of the cover both in applying it'and inrei'noving it,-and also. a
to permit the cover to be readily handled,
the cover is provided with a handle strap 3 20 riveted or otherwise. secured to it. A
suitable tool may be applied to this handle to obtain the leverage necessary to lock or release the cover.
In order that the cover may be lockedin place and pressed down tightly against the gasket to prevent leakage when the cover is turned, it is provided with cam portions 21 on opposite sides of the slots 19 and a suit able distance from the relatively large portions of the slots, these cams being preferably formed by striking up portions of the cover flange by a suitable indenting or depressing tool applied to the under side of the flange or otherwise. These cams or struck-up portions are so arranged and are of such a height that when the cover is turned after being applied to the head, with the heads of the rivets'extending through the enlarged portions of the slots, the struckup portions or cams ride under the rivet heads 18 so that the cover is not only locked in position against accidental displacement, but is at the same time forced downward into tight engagement with the gasket so as to render the container leak proof.
In this way an effective container with a removable cover is made very inexpensively, but at the same time the cover can be applied or removed readily and without loss of time, and inasmuch as the container is leak proof, particularly when used in the shipment of semi-liquid material such as paint, the container is a very desirable one from both the standpoints of the manufacturer and user.
Having described my invention, I claim:
1. A container having a head with an opening for a cover and having upstanding locking pins, and a cover having slots to receive the pins and having cam portions co-operating with the pins so as to lock and tighten the cover when the latter is turned so as to move the slotted portions relative to the pins.
2. A metal container comprising a body having a head provided with a cover opening and provided outside the opening with spaced locking pins, and cover having a peripheral portion provided with arc-shaped slots adapted to receive the pins and having elevated portions adjacent the slots adapted to have a camming action on the heads of the pins when the cover is turned so that the slots and pins are moved relatively.
3. A metal container comprising a body hax ing a head provided with a cover opening and with a down-turned flange around the opening, said head having also outside the flange upstanding headed locking pins spaced circumferentially about the opening, and a cover having a depressed portion adapted to fit inside the flange of the head and having a peripheral flange adapted to overlie the cover, the flange having slots, each large enough at one end to receive the head of the pin and of a reduced width for the remainder of its length, and said flange having adjacent the slots elevated cam portions adapted to ride under the heads of the locking pins to press the cover downward toward the head when the cover is applied to the head and then turned relative thereto, and a gasket between the flange of the cover and the head.
4. A container comprising a body having a head with a cover opening and provided outside the opening with upstanding headed locking pins, a cover having a depressed portion adapted to fit down into the cover opening and provided with a peripheral flange having slots adapted to accommodate the locking pins and each enlarged at one end so as to receive the head of the corresponding pin, said cover having adjacent the slots at a distance from the enlarged portions thereof struck-up port-ions adapted to ride under the heads of the pins when the cover is turned, whereby the cover is clamped downwardly, and a gasket beneath the flange of the cover and adapted to be compressed by the camming action.
In testimony whereof, I hereunto aflix my signature.
