PAPER OR PULP CONTAINER.
Application filed April 29, 1920. Serial No. 377,702.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK COATES, a citizen of the United States, residing at W yoming, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Paper or Pulp Con-' tainers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates more articularly to ,a one-piece top or bottom or head or end formed into an oblong or rund cup-shape, which is adapted to be inserted onto or arranged in holding engagement with the end of a paper or pulp shell or tube to which said cup-shaped head is suitably glued or otherwise adhesively sealed and given holding pressure.

My invention consists of a one-piece paper or pulp head or end or top or bottom of a paper or ulp container centrally dished with a channe ed flange adapted to receive the end of the shell or tube and be pressed or crimped into holding engagement thereon after first having the contacting surfaces coated with adhesive material, or in some cases, the adhesive material may be dispensed with.
My invention also consists in the details of construction and in the parts and combination and arrangement of parts as herein set forth and claimed.

In the embodiment of my invention as illustrated, and which shows preferred constructions, the body or shell 1 or 1', as the case may be, is formed in any usual and well known manner into the shape shown. The head 2 or 2 is preferably provided with 'a channel 3 adapted to receive the edge of the shell 1 or 1' and to be suitably secured thereto *by glue or other adhesive material interposed between the adjacent walls of said channel and shell, the walls of said channel being preferably compressed over the adacent edge of the shell to form a perfectly tight and secure 'oint. The head may, if desired, be secure upon the shell merely by compression without the use of lue or other adhesive. The head is preferab y formed b being dished outwardly from the inner wa l of the channel as shown in Figs. 1, 2, 3 and 4, but may be dished inwardly as shown in Figs. 5 and 6. When dished outwardly, a V-shaped groove 4 is formed as shown in Fig. 1 in which the surface of the central part of head 5 is formed flush with the outer surface 6 of channel 3. If desired, however, the form of the groove may be varied as shown at 4' in Fig. 2, where the outer surface of the head 5 extends in a plane below the outer surface 6 of channel 3'.
It will be apparent that my invention is capable of modification without departure from its scope or spirit, as just indicated, and also as shown by reference to Fig. 5 in which the head 5" is tapered inwardly between its flat central portion and the channeled portion. Still another modification is shown in Fig. 6 in which the central portion of the head extends inwardly from the channel and straight across to form a more extended contact between the head and the shell and to provide a deeper depression in the end of the container, as well as to provide a head requiring simpler tools in its construction, thereb making it more economical.
In ig. 7 I have shown the central portion of the container of concavo-convex shape with radial flutes 6 thereon to provide ornamental construction of the requisite strength.
The heads or ends are preferably formed by means of specially constructed novel tools or machinery not forming a part of this invention.
These containers are preferably treated with a chemical solution for the purpose of rendering them non-lockable.
These containers are articularly adapted for use as receptacles or powders, liquids and solids. When so used, onehead may be secured in position and glued or otherwise secured to the shell and havin the other end open to receive the contents. en the container has been filled, the other head may be inserted and the container is then ready for use. If it is desired that the container be completely sealed after receiving the contents, the channel of the head may be coated with adhesive material and the edge of the shell inserted therein, suitable pressure be ing applied to the outer channel wall to cause the head and shell to become very firmly united by the adhesive.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A paper or pulp container comprising a paper or pulptube or shell having its head or end formed from a sin le piece of paper or pulp dished outwardly and havlng a pre-formed channel upon its edge adapted to receive and engage the edge and reverse side of said shell, an means for holding said head and shell from accidental disengagement, substantially as set forth and for the purposes specified.
2. A paper or pulp container comprising a paper or pulp tube or shell having its head or end formed from a single piece of paper or pulp and provided with an outwardly curved concavo-convex fluted central portion and a pre-formed channeled rim portion and means for securin the edge of said channeled rim portion in engagement therewith, substantiall as set forth and for the purposes spec' ed.
4. A paper or pulp container comprising a paper or pulp tube or shell having its head or end formed from a single piece of paper or pulp and provided with an outwardly curved concave-convex radiall fluted central portion and a pre-formed c anneled rim portion, and means for securing the edge of said channeled rim portion in engagement therewith, substantially as set forth and for the purposes specified.
