Description

F.1BURDETL BATH-TUBS.
Patented Jan. 25,1876.
No.17Z,605.
N-FETERS, PHOTOLITHDGRAPHER, WASHINGTON, D Cv UNITED STATES PATENT QFFIGE.
FRANCIS BURDETT, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN BATH-TUBS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 11 72,605, dated J annary "25, 1876; application filed July 21, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANCIS BURDETT, of the city and State of New York, have invented an Improvement in Bath-Tubs, of which the following is a specification:
Bidets or portable bath-tubs are well known, and are used for washing purposes in bedrooms.
My present invention is made to facilitate transportation and increase the durability.
. The bidets that have heretofore been made are generally provided with a porcelain pan with three or more lugs projecting at its edge, and the wooden frame has to be titted to the same, and the pan is diificult to remove, and is apt to tip in the frame by pressure toward one end.
I make use of a wooden frame into which is introduced a long narrow vessel with a flange and rim all around it, and this frame is grooved or recessed toreceive the flange and rim, so as to retain any water that may be spilled upon the upper edge of the frame, and at the same time to prevent the vessel tipping in use, and I employ removable legs to support the frame and bath at a height that is convenient for use. A cover is also employed.
When not in use this bath can be placed in a very small space by unscrewing the legs and placing them in the bathtub.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is a plan o a bathtub, and Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section of the same.
The bath-tub ais made, by preference, of thin cast-iron, with an interior coating of vitrified enamel, and the outside may be coated with the same material. The tub may, however, be made of papier-mach, or other durable and light material. This tub a has a top the groove may be wiped out after the bath has been used. This groove allows the flange of the vessel to take a firm bearing, and prevents the same tipping by pressure upon the edges. The movable legs hare screwed into the frame d, and when the bath-tub is to be packed or transported these legs are unscrewed and laid in the tub. A cover, 1, is made to fit upon the bidet, and protect the tub from dust or injury.
I claim as my invention- The portable bathtub made of the recessed frame 61, removable legs h, vessel a, with flange b and rim 0, sitting into the recessed upper portion of the frame d, as and for the purposes set forth.
Signed by me this 17th day of July, A. D. 1875.
FRANCIS BURDETT.
