INVENTOR Patented Nov. 17, 1931 PATENT OFFICE JANE K. ROGER-S, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
COMPOSITE COSMETIC CONTAINER Application filed May 28, 1930. Serial No. 456,370.
This invention relates to containers for cosmetics and more particularly to types holding a considerable quantity of material, adapted for boudoirs, dressing rooms and like places where toilet accessories may be conveniently used. It is also of great value in travelling, or for visiting as a. supply of the needed cosmetics can'be safely and conveniently carried in a travelling bag, all in the one receptacle.
It is regarded as essential in beautifying the skin to first, apply a cleansing cream copiously, and after it has been removed to use a nourishing cream (skin food) and finally to treat the skin with an astringent.
Hitherto these several elements have been provided in separate, independent containers, occupying considerable space on the toilet stand or in a travelling bag.
Having this matter in mind, it has been an object of the present invention to provide a composite container having compartments for each of the articles most used, the compartments varying in area in conformity with the usual demand for each.
A further feature is in the provision of a composite container designed to present a pleasing appearance and to avoid substantially all danger of inadvertent overturning or upsetting.
Another aim is in the production of a. container suited to receive a refill and to retain its contents free from dust, its joints being practically air tight.
These several advantageous objects are attained by the novel design, construction and combination of few and simple parts hereinafter described and shown in the accompanying drawings, forming a material part of this disclosure, and in which Figure 1 is a top plan View of an embodiment of the invention.
Figure 2 is a partial side elevational, partial sectional View of the same.
Figure 3 is a similar view of a refill used in the container, as supplied with a temporary cover.
A preferred form of the container is shown as consisting of a three-stepped cylinder comprising base, body and cap respectively.
The base 10 is comprised of a bottom plate 11 having a raised cylindrical wall 12 terminating in a screw threaded upper portion 13 of reduced diameter.
Engaged by the threads 13 is a flanged skirt 14-, uniform in diameter with the body wall 12, formed at the edge of the first annular step 15, from the inner edge of which rises a circular wall 16.
The wal 16 is bent inwardly at its upper edge forming the second, reduced step 17 of the container, the same being turned upward at its inner edge to constitute an annular nozzle 18, screw threaded on its periphery. Fitted to engage the threads of the nozzle 18 is a skirt flange 19 formed at the edge of a cap 20, having a level imperforate top.
These several elements are adapted to be stamped or die formed from sheet metal, aluminum being preferred, as is also the refill, shown in detail in Figure 3.
This refill, generally designated by the numeral 21, is composed of a bottom plate 22 having a raised circular side wall 23, its upper portion 24: being reduced in diameter and fitted to receive the skirt portion 25 of a temporary cover 26, the central portion 27 of which is raised for convenience in operating.
Secured concentrically on the inner surface of the refill bottom 22 is a thin ring 28, 4
its upper edge extending level with the edge of the wall. 24, thus forming two distinct compartments in the refill, respectively 29 and 30, the latter, outer annular compartment being of much greater area than the central compartment 29.
A glass receptacle, designed to contain the astringent, is formed with a flat bottom 31 adapted to seat on the upper edge of the ring 28, wh1le an annular flange 32, in effect a continuation of the bottom wall, makes contact with the under surface of the step 15.
The circular wall 33 of the glass receptacle is fitted to enter within the casing wall 16, and its top element 3d is disposed under the step 17, while its mouth 35 reaches up to the under side of the cap 20. V
The outer annular space 30 in the base is suited to retain the cleansing cream, as a greater quantity of its is used relatively to the nourishing cream, which occupies the central compartment, and the liquid astringent is safely contained in the body of the receptacle in the upper portion of the container.
Obviously to obtain access to the creams the upper portion of the container is unscrewed from the base, revealing the compartments 29-30 in the refill, the arrangement being such as to permit ready substitu tion when its contents become exhausted.
Similarly by removing the cap over the top of the container, the contents of the glass receptacle become available without disturbing the creams.
Due to the broad base of the device, as compared with its height, and to the' fact that the weight is concentrated in its lower portion, the danger of upsetting is remote.
The foregoing disclosure is to be regarded as descriptive and illustrative only, and not as restrictive or limitative of the invention, of which obviously an embodiment may be constructed including modifications without departing from the general scope herein in dicated and denoted in the appended claims.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new and desired to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A composite container comprising a casing having a plain. cylindrical metallic base, an interjacent hollow body removably engaged thereon, a cover screw threaded to said body, a. receptacle engaged in said base, said receptacle having a central circular compartment and an annular compartment therearound and a single receptacle supported on the last named receptacle to extend into said cover.
2. A composite container comprising a metallic casing having a stepped cylindrical body, an enlarged base threadedly engaged therewith, a removable refill disposed in said base, a ring concentric in said refill forming two level compartments, a liquid holder in said body to rest on said ring, and a cap engageable on said body to cover said holder said holder having a raised portion entering said cap.
3. A composite cosmetic container comprising a cylindrical body having an outstanding fiange at its lower edge, an internal ly threaded skirt depending from said flange, a hollow base having a. raised wall to engage said skirt, an inreaching flange on the upper edge of said body having a raised threaded annulus, a cap engaging said annulus, a refill removably engaged in said base, a raised ring fixed concentrically in said refill to form central and circumjacent compartments, a liquid holding receptacle in said body to rest on said ring, and a flange on the bottom of the last named receptacle to contact the lowermost flange on said body, thereby to be retained.
4:. A composite cosmetic container comprising a stepped cylindrical casing, including a metallic base, body and cover, a refill fitting said base and provided With two compartments respectively inner and outer in the same plane and of unlike area, a receptacle in said body seated on said refill, and means permitting access to said refill.
5. A composite cosmetic container comprising a plain stepped cylindrical casing, including a metallic base, body and cover, a refill fitting said base, an annular partition ring in said refill co-extensive in height with its side wall, means for detachably engaging said base and body to render said refill accessible, a liquid receptacle in said body accessible upon removal of said cover, and means for confining said liquid receptacle over said refill.
6. A composite cosmetic container comprising a stepped cylindrical casing, including a base, a reduced body, and a further reduced cover, a plurally compartmented refill in said base, an independent cover for said refill, a receptacle in said body, and detachable means to confine said receptacle and said refill within said container.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto aifixed my signature.
JANE K. ROGERS.
