To all whom it may concern.

Be it known that I, JOHN WV. GARDNER, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at 383 Third avenue, in the city of Troy, in the county of Rensselaer and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Collars, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to collars, and the object of my invention is to provide a button-hole cover for a collar band by means of which the shirt stud shall not interfere with the cravat; together with such elements and combinations as are hereinafter more particularly set forth and claimed. I accomplish these objects as shown in the accompanying drawing, in which:

Figure 1 is a plan of my button-hole cover before it is folded for use. Fig. 2 is a plan of the button-hole cover with its edges turned in. Fig. 3 is a plan of the buttonhole cover folded ready for attachment to the goods. Fig. i is an end elevation of the form shown in Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a plan of a modified form of the button-hole cover, in which a piece, S, is placed over the engaging edges of the folded strip forming the button-hole cover. Fig. 6 is an end elevation of the modified form shown in Fig. 5. Fig. 7 is a plan of a collar provided with my invention before the turned-down portion is folded in position for use. Fig. 8 is a section of a collar with the turned-down portion in its position ready for use. Fig. 9 is a plan of a modified form of button hole cover. Fig. 10 is a section of a collar with the turned-down portion in its position ready for use, showing the strip, W, provided with a button-hole, V, sewed to the inside of the band, F.

Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.

It is of great convenience to provide on a collar a means for covering the end of the stud commonly used for buttoning the collar to the shirt at the back, because otherwise it is very difiicult to draw the cravat for the purpose of tying the same. It is very desirable that the covering for the shirt stud should be inexpensive, easily and quickly constructed and which may be attached to the collar after the collar has been otherwise completed. It should be adapted to be strongly attached to the collar at its Specification of Letters Patent.

ends. out so arranged that it may be easily separated from the collar band sufficiently to allow the insertion of the stud through the button hole beneath it. To this end I have invented a button-hole cover, which, before it is folded, in the form shown in Fig. 1, has its outer edges, A, A, convex in form and has its ends slotted at B, B, so that from the medial line, C, at the end of the collar there are two outwardly extending oortions, Z), a, separated from each other as the distance increases from said medial line.

The edges A, A, of the collar are turned over as shown at (Z, (Z, in Fig. 2. The button-hole cover is then folded along the medial line, C. and assumes the position shown in Figs. 3 and 4:. It is sewed through the turned-over portions and the cover is then attached to the band, F, of the collar, G, (over the button-hole, H, and adapted to be covered by the turned-down portion, J, of the collar) by sewing with an overcast stitch the ends, B, B, of the button-hole cover, leaving the upper straight edge, 0, and the lower convex edge, A, loose, the lower convex edge, A, preferably extending below the band, F.

In the modified form shown in Figs. 5 and 6, I show the strip, E, made as the strip, A, in Fig.'1, but instead of turning down the edge, A, at (Z, as in Fig. 2, I place a strip, S, over the edges as shown in Figs. 5 and 6, covering the raw edges of the strip, E. The strip, S, is bent at about midway between its edges at s, and its edges, 25, are folded in as shown in Fig. 6, so that all the raw edges of the strip, E, and the strip, S, are protected. The strip, S, is sewed to the strip, E, as shown by dotted lines, K. The form of the ends of the strips, A, and E, which when folded is such that when the straight edge, 0, is placed in position above the button hole in the collar band the ends flare outwardly and toward each end of the collar. is an important part of my invention; because it enables me to stitch the button-hole cover to the collar band, after the collar is made, in a perfectly secure'manner and without unnecessary inconvenience or the expenditure of much time, and especially because it prevents the cover from shifting transversely of the collar band during laundering operation.

In Fig. 9 I show a button-hole, V, in the strip, W. This strip, W, may be attached to the side of the band opposite to that to which the covers before mentioned are "applied, in order that the shirt stud may be inserted through the'button-hole, V. The arrangement of the lower edge of the strip when placed on the band so that it is convex is also an important part of my invention, as

that illustratedin Fig. 6, are well protected from raveling or fraying. By using the overcast stitch at the ends of the buttonhole cover I secure the cover in such a manner that the raw edges are covered and protected so that there shall be no tearing, raveling or fraying at the ends;

My invention is simple but very effective, is easily constructed and performs its'functions in a highly satisfactory manner.
