itizen of the United tates, residing at Deodate, in the county of Bauphin and State of ennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful lmprovenients in Sealing Devices for dar-Caps, of which the following is a specification.
rlhis invention relates to an improved device for sealing closures and is especially designed for use in connection with circular metallic caps which are adapted to have screw threaded engagement with suitable ject to provide an implement of this character which may readily be operatively connected with the cap and rotated thereon to press the terminal radial flange formed at the outer extremity of the side wall of the cap into engagement with the gasket con nionly interposed between said flange and the body portion of the jar, to thus provide an air-tight closure.
The invention has as a. still further object to provide a device of this character which will be simple in construction and which may be used upon any conventional type of circular metallic jar cap as now on the market.

Corresponding and like parts are referred in the following description and indicated all the views of the drawings by the same ference characters. T he present invention, therefore, seeks to provide a device by which the flange ist of the jar cap may be brought into close and interrupted engagement with the gasket l5 carried by the j ar, and so constructed that by rotating the device upon the cap, any inequalities in the bearing surface of said flange such as might have been brought about through the injury thereof may be rolled out so that the flange may form a perfect joint between the gasket and the cap.
Coming now to more particularly describe the invention, the body portion 16 thereof includes a substantially semi-circular preferably concave convex bearing flange 17 which presents the inner concave face i8. Formed on the upper edge of the bearing flange 17 and connecting the extremities thereof, is a transversely extending arm 19 and intersecting the arm 19 midway the ends thereof and extending at substantially right angles to said arm is an arm 20, the arm 2O being oined at its inner extremity, with the upper edge of the bearing flange 17 substantially midway the ends of said flange.
The arm 20, adjacent to its outer extremity is obliquely directed longitudinally as shown at 2l to extend away from the bearing flange 17 upon the contiguous side of said arm and the adjacent terminal 22 thereof is thence again directed longitudinally in reverse relation to extend obliquely toward the free lower edge of said flange. Mounted for rotation upon a suitable pin 23 and arranged adjacent the inner face of the inwardly directed terminal 22 of the arm 20 is a disk 24, the periphery of which is beveled to provide an inclined face 25 sloping away from the adjacent terminal of the arm 20.
In Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings, I have shown the manner in which the device is applied in use and it will be observed that the side wall of the cap 12 is embraced by the bearingliange 17 land by the arm 20, the bearing flange being of a widthfslightly greater' than the side wall of the cap and bearing at its Vfree outer edge -upon the flange 14 thereof, while the obliquely directed portion 21 of the arm 2O is disposed to extend over the upper edge of the cap opposite the bearing flange 17 with the disk 24 bearing by its beveled face 25 upon the adjacent portion of the peripheral edge of said flange. It will be observed that owing to the angulardisposition of theterminal 23 of the arm 20, that when downward pres-V sure is exerted upon the body portionl 16, the disk- 24- will be caused to bearV downwardly and inwardly upon the peripheral edge of the flange 14 to not only thereby force the side wall of the cap into secure engagement withthe neck of the jar 10, but the flange 14 at its outer edge will also be brought into firm engagement with the gasket 15.
In practical use, it is intended that after the cap 12 of the jar has been applied thereto in the usual manner, that the device shall Y be placed upon'the cap as shown in Figs. 1
and 2 of the drawings, and kthen rotatedv thereon, ldownward pressure being exerted upon the body portion 16 as the deviceis rotated. It will beclear that the disk 24-may be lpassed over the flange 14 throughout its entire circumference as many times as desired and the inclined face 25 of said disk upon engaging the peripheral edgeY of the flange'will smooth out or roll out any inequalities therein which may have been brought about through accidental injury to the flange, to provvide a "smooth, uninterrupted bearing surface upon the inner face thereof to contact with the gasket 15, and
- will also bend the peripheral margin of said flange downwardly'and inwardly toward the neck of the jar to securely engage the gasket arranged thereon. tothe fact that while the disk 24 is arranged to contact with the yflange 14 at a substan tially obtuse angle thereto, the bearing flange 17 is arrangedto contact with kthe flange at substantially right angles thereto, the disk having a tendency tokk force said flangey downwardly and inwardly as above stated, toward the neck of the j ar, while the bearing flange 17 is disposed Vto force said flange downwardly toward the body portion of the jar when pressure is applied thereto, to bring said flange throughout its enti-re width, into contact with the gasket 15. Attention is also called to the fact that'wh'en downward pressure is exertedl upon the body portion 16 in the practical use of the device, that the free edge of the bearing flange 17 which restsupon the flange 14 of thecap 12 will be caused to coactwith the disk 24 to smooth out any `inequalities in the surface of the flange 14, such as slight depressions or l Vupwardly projecting portions in said flange to thus insure the provision ofjan uninterrupted flat bearing surface' upon the inner face of said flange, such surface being dis posed to contact with the gasket 14 or 'with the body portion ofthe jar proper as the case may be. However, it will be clear that equal effectiveness upon jar caps which have `not previously been applied in use, and have ymy improved device may be employed with a very eiiicient construction for the purpose Y set forth and that the complete'device may be readily manufactured in accommodate the diameters or the various heights of different jar caps.

A device of the character described adapted to embrace a jar cap to be rotated thereon and including a semi-circular flange isposed to Confront the side wall of the cap, the said flange having a transversely extending arm formed on one edge thereof connecting the extremities of the flange and being provided with a second arm intersecting said first mentioned arm and connected with the said flange between the ends thereof7 and a member carried by the free extremity of said second mentioned arm and disposed tc engage the terminal peripheral flange of said cap.

As a neu7 article of manufacture, a jar cap sealing device integrally formed from suitable sheet metal and including a flange disposed to engage the side wall of a jar cap, the extremities of said flange being joined by a transversely extending arm and connected with the flange upon one edge thereof, the said arm being intersected by a second arm connected with the flange substantially midway of its ends, and a member rotatably mounted upon the free extremity of said second mentioned arm and disposed to engage the terminal peripheral flange of the jar cap to be rotated around the cap upon the said flange thereof.
5. A device of the character described including a substantially semi-circular flange disposed to confront the side wall of a jar cap, an arm formed on said flange and arranged to extend over the top of the cap and over the side thereof, opposite said flange, and a member carried by the free extremity of said arm and disposed to engage the terminal peripheral flange of said cap, to be moved circumferentially around the cap upon the said flange thereof.
