UNITED STATES PATENT QFFTCE.
HERBERT JAMES VIYATT, OF LONGBRANCH, WASHINGTON.
SPOUT-FAUCET BASE.
Application filed July 12, 1917.
1 '0 all LU/6071b it may concern.
Be it known that I, llnnnnirr J. m-WT, a British subject. residing at Longbranch, in the county of Pierce and State of WVashing ton, have invented a new and Improved Spout-Faucet Base, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvemei'its in detachable spout faucet bases capable of being quickly attached to or removed from thin sheet metal or other character of containers, and the object of this improvement is to provide a spout faueet base so shaped as to give it a firm hold on its seat and to be easily removed therefrom. without defacing the seat opening.
A further object resides in the provision of a spout faucet base capable of cutting and entirely removing the cut away portions from the hole so as to give a smooth surface to the seat.
A still further object resides in the provision of a spout faucet base so formed as to be self centering.
A still further object resides in the construction of a double bearing shoulder surface for the packing and washer so as to prevent leakage.
T he invention consists in the arrangement, construction and combination of parts, as will be more fully described in the following specification, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and finally pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical view in side elevation of the spout faucet; Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same; F i 3 is a bottom end view; Fig. 4 is a vertical section of part of the spout faucet base with parts removed taken on line 99 of Fig. 3; and Fig. 5 is a plan view of the winged clamping nut.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, in which like reference numerals indicate like parts, the numeral 1 represents a tubular body part of a spout faucet, having threads 9 provided around its outer periphery for the reception of a Winged clamping nut 2. At the lower extremity of the thread ed portion 9 the tubular body part 1 is in creased in diameter, forming a sloping shoulder terminating into a flange 10 with a comparatively flat surface, and beneath this flange is a centering member 6 formed integral with the tubular body part. Oppositely disposed upon the lower surface of the Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 55, 1919.
Serial no. 188,243.
flange 10 is a cutting member The flange 10 is further provided with a slot cut therein at an angle, with lips 7 and S slightly out of alinement with each other. lntennediate the flange 10 and the winged shaped clamping nut 2 are interposed a clamping washer 3 engageable by the winged-shaped nut 2 and a packing 4-, which in turn is engageable by the washer 3, the lower face of the pack ing being adapted to be urged into contact with the outer face of the container, not shown, whereas the upper surface of the flange is adapted to be urged into contact with the inner face of the container when the winged -shaped nut is screwed down tightly, and thus forms a tight construction against leakage.
The spout faucet is attached to a container in the following manner: The curved body part of the tubular member 1 is grasped by the hand and pressure is exerted to urge the point of the centering memher 6 through the container. A twisting motion is thence exerted to the right until the cutting member 5 has cut away a circular hole into the container which is of smaller diameter than. the diameter of the flange 10. Against the peripheral edge of this hole in the container, the flange 10 is pressed and twisted to the right until the lip 7 of the recess thereof has been urged beneath the circular edge of the container formed by the hole cut therein, a continuance of the twisting motion urges the circular edge of the container to the extremity of the slot and thus permits the flange 10 of greater diameter than the hole provided in the container to enter the opening by this spiral movement. The packing f is thence let down until it rests upon the outer surface of the container. The washer 3 is thence placed upon the packing and the wingedshaped nut is screwed up tightly. It is to be observed that the shoulder portion of the tubular body part forms a double bearing surface for the packing, whereupon when the washer 3, which is of the same contour, is urged against the packing by the pressure of the nut, the bearing surface produced by the flange and the shoulder co-act to preclude leakage.
lVhat I claim as new, and desire to protect by Letters Patent, is:
1. A spout faucet of the class described comprising a tubular member having an integrally formed slotted flange upon the lower end thereof, oppositely disposed piercing and cutting members provided on the lower surface of said flange to pierce the wall of a container and to cut a circular portion away therefrom to form an entry for said flange, a packing member disposed to encircle said tubular member and to rest against the outer wall of said container, a washer similarly disposed in abutment with said packing, and a clamping nut adapted to engage said washer and to clamp the oppositc sides of the pierced wall of said container between said flange and packing member.
2. A spout faucet of the class described comprising a tubular member having an integrally formed slotted flange upon the lower end thereof, oppositely disposed piercing and cutting members provided on the lower surface of said flange to pierce the wall of a container and to cut a certain portion away therefrom to form an entry for said flange, said flange formed with an upwardly inclined shoulder, a packing member disposed to encircle said tubular member and adapted to rest against the outer wall of said container, a washer of the contour of said shoulder and flange similarly disposed over said tubular member in abutment with said packing, and a clamping nut adapted to engage said washer and to clamp the opposite sides of the pierced wall of said container between said flange and packing member.
