2 Claims.
This invention relates to an improved mending patch and seeks, among other objects, to provide a device of this character embodying a sealing disc of soft material which, when the patch is tightened to locked position, will be fully enclosed by a depending flange on the head of the device so that said sealing disc will be eiectually protected.
Another object of the invention is to provide a mending patch wherein the head is formed with a depending flange so that reinforcement for the circumferential edg-e will be provided.
A further object of the invention is to provide a mending patch wherein the iiange employed will prevent bending up of the head with consequent mutilation of the sealing disc.

Referring now more particularly to the accompanying drawing forming a part of our application, and wherein like numerals of reference designate like parts throughout the description, the numeral l indicates a head which is preferably formed from light weight sheet metal and, as shown in Figure 2, is circular in plan. The head is provided at its rim with a depending ilange 2. Mounted axially of the head I is a stud 3 which is locked in place on the head and is provided (Cl. 13S-9S) with an externally threaded free end portion ft, which end portion is adapted to receive a nutl 5. Referring to the modification illustrated in Figure 4 of the drawing, we employ a head il which is provided with a stud I8 adapted to extend through a puncture in the surface or wall I9. A washer 20 closes the lower side of the surwall to be patched.

Formed on the head I1 at its circumferential edge is a depending iiange 22 which terminates in a relatively short radial flange 23 adapted to overlie the surface 19 when the nut 2l is vclamped to a locked position. Disposed beneath the head Il and within the confines of the flanges 22 and 23 is a sealing disc 24 which is similar in construction to the disc Ei inthe preferred form of the invention and is adapted to cooperate with the head and stern for permitting the punctured surface to be eifectually patched.
rThe radial ilange 23 not only improves the appearance of the device but also facilitates the manufacture thereof as it permits a better gaging of the depth 'of the head. Aside from the foregoing, the operation of this modification of the invention is identical with that of the preferred form.
Referring to the modification of the invention as shown in Figure 6, we employ a head which is indicated inrgeneral by the numeral 25. The head is provided with an upwardly pressed semi-circular rib 2li intermediate its radius which denes upper and lower portions 45 and 46, and also a stud 2l which is adapted to project through a surface or wall to be patched. A nut 28 is provided on the stud, as is a washer 2S which washer is adapted to underlie the wall, as shown at Sil, and thus provide a firm base against which to tighten the nut 28. Formed on the circumferential edgeof the head 25 is a depending flange 3l which terminates in a radial flange 32, which, like the radial flange 23, is adapted. to overlie the A sealing disc 33 is confined within the head 25 and serves eectually to seal the puncture in the wall or surface. The rib 2t provides reinforcement for the head and also serves as a guard, so that when the article to which the patch is secured is being cleaned, the cleaning cloth or scraper will not be permitted to catch under the upper end of the stud 2l. Inasmuch as the portion 45 is of greater height than the portion d6, a greater pressure will be exerted on the depending iiange 3l and radial flange 32. Aside from this feature, the constructionV and operation of this modified form of the invention is identical with that disclosed in the modiiication shown in Figure 4.
In the modication shown in Figure 7 of the drawing, we employ a substantially frusto conical head 34 which is provided with a depending flange 35 and a radial flange 35 corresponding to the flanges 3l and 32 in Figure 6. The head is provided with a stud 31 which is provided with an enlarged upper portion or cap 33 carried in a recess 39 formed in the head 3A. The stud is adapted to project through the surface or wall to be patched and a engaged with a washer 4l for tightly clamping the patch in position.
VAlthough we have shown in the preferred embodiment of the invention as well as in the modiiications, the head as being circular in outline, it should be understood that said head may be of any desired shape.
Our improved mending patch, in any of its embodiments, may be manufactured cheaply and may be put into use with the utmost facility.
Having thus described the invention, what We claim is:
l. A mending patch including a disc having a marginal ange, a portion of said disc being struck upwardly to form an annular rib spaced from margins of the disc, a stud carried by the disc centrally thereof and adapted to project through an opening to be sealed, said rib surrounding the upper end of the stud, a nut on the lower end of the stud, and a sealing disc disposed against the disc about the stud and being adapted for sealing the opening when the nut is tightened, said rib providing reinforcement for the disc and additional resiliency thereto for creating binding between threads of the stud and nut and said marginal flange conning the sealing disc beneath the head for preventing mutilation thereof.
2. A mending patch including a disc having a circumferentially extending rib spaced from its periphery dening an inner portion and an outer portion for said disc, said inner portion being of greater height than said outer portion, a stud extending throughrthe disc axially of saidinner portion and having against the outer face of the disc and surrounded by the rib, a nut on the stud and a sealing disc carried beneath the disc about said stud and being adapted for closing an opening to be sealed in a wall when the nut is tightened, said rib providing a reinforcement for the disc and together with said upper and lower portions cooperating for creating a binding action between threads of the stud and nut to hold the nut in a set position and also permitting a greater pressure to be exerted upon the outer rim of said disc whereby said sealing disc will'be rmly clamped betweenthe head and wall.
