This invention relates to container construetions and more particularly to container end constructions. I
An object of the invention is to provide a container end construction wherein a rigid, metallic completely preformed end may be placed on the open end of a tubular container body, and permanently locked on the body without the aid of machinery, tools or the like such as are normally used to seam or turn over portions of permanent ends on container bodies.
A further object of the invention is a container end construction particularly adapted for use with container bodies of paper or the like, the construction including a metallic snap-on end which, when once in place, cannot be removed from the container body without destroying container portions, the end being applied without the aid of deforming means such as are necessary with conventional permanent ends.
Still further objects of the invention will become readily apparent upon reference to the following detailed description of embodiments of the same and upon reference to the appended drawing, in whichsection;
Figure 2 is a partial section of a container end per se, as if on the line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Referring to thedrawing, it. will be seen that the container of Figures 1 and 2 includes atubular or cylindrical open ended body 10, preferably of a soft material such as paper, plflp, compo-' sition or the like. Within and on the open end of the body is a container end 12, preferably of a sheet metal or the like. The 'materials'for the body and end are specified because it is advisable and preferable that the end be much harder than the body itself, for the purposes of this invention.
The end includes a plate like portion 14 having an upwardly turnedflange 16 which is turned upwardly and outwardly as at 17, then downwardly and outwardly as at 18, then inwardly and upwardlyas at 19 to provide an inwardly and upwardly turned edge 20. The latter may be made sharp, and jagged if desired, tho it is preferable to leave it plain. Further, the parts may be so proportioned preferably, that flange 16 of the end is greater, in radial width, than the normal thickness of the body. 10, for

Figures 1 and 3 show container ends'in a crossthe annular gap between the edge 20 and the The container end may be applied to the container body merely by forcing it down into and over the open end of the .body. Due to the fact that the annular gap 20 between edge 20 and flange 16 is greater than the thickness of the 9 body, the body will enter and pass this gap without being injured or scored materially by the edge. However,- when the upper edge of the body reaches the upper portion of flange 16 near where the flange starts to turn outwardly, the upper edge of the body, will be deflected outwardly so that the-body will be pressed against edge 20. The latter will then cut a groove in. the exterior surface of the body and will lock itself in such groove. The end of the body being 7 deflected-outwardly and being held so deflected,
will be locked upon the edge 20 with its groove 'In this manner the body, and the end are locked to each other, all without the use of tools 76 or other deformingmeans to alter the preformed end cap or body. Once the end is in place upon the body, the end cannot be removed therefrom without destroying, altering, tearing, or cutting the container body or'the end, this being due to 80 the fact that the body is held firmly in deflected position and locked on edge 20.
In Figure 3, there is disclosed a construction wherein the end caps include a metallic plate like portion 30, and an upwardly turned flange 31 whose elements are at a slight obtuse angle to the plane of the part 30. The flange 31 merges into a turned over bead 32 having a downwardly turned flange 33, shown parallel to flange 31, and terminating in an upwardly and inwardly turned edge 34, like the edge 20 of Figure 1. The gap between edge 34 and flange 31 is shown as less than the thickness of the paper like wall 35.
The cap of Figure 3 may be applied to'the wall 35 by snapping it down over the edge ofthe cylindrical wall 35. The edge 34 will be deflected somewhat and the material of wall 35 will compress a' slight degree forming a. lock joint, as shown, of suflicient strength to prevent removal m0 of the cap from the wall.
While in the preferred embodiments the body will be made of paper and the end of metal, it is of course understood that othenmaterials might be employed so long as no departure from the original invention is involved. Further, while in the form shown, the end, as well as the container cross section, is round, it

A container construction including an open ended cylindrical body of relatively soft material, and an end therefor of relatively hard material, the end having a plate like closure portion and a channelled rim including an inner flange turned upwardly and tapering outwardly from the plate like portion, and an outer flange connected thereto at the upper edge thereof, and having an inwardly directed lower edge, the radial distance between the edge and the inner flange being considerably greater than the thicknessof the body, the inner flange defleeting the body radially outwardly, from an annular line closely adjacent the lower edge of the outer flange and causing the body portion to be annularly grooved by and receive the lower edge of the outer flange, the channelled rim presenting a. cross section in the form of an the plate like portion, and an outer flange connected thereto at the upper edge thereof, and having an inwardly and upwardly directed lower edge, the radial distance between the edge and the inner flange being considerably greater than the thickness of the body, the inner flange degarages fleeting the body radially outwardly from an an: nular line closely adjacent the lower edge of the outer flange and causing the body portion to be annularly grooved by and receive the lower edge of the outer flange, the channelled rim presenting a. cross section in the form of an inverted v.
5. A contahzer construction including an open ended body of relatively soft material, and an end therefor of relatively hard maten'al, the end a platelke closure porhon and a channelled rim including an inner flange turned upwardly and tapering outwardly :Trom the plate portion, and an outer flange connected thereto at the upper edge thereof, and an inwardly lower edge, the radial distance the edge and the inner flange greater than the thicknms of body, the inner flange deflecting the body radially outwardly, from an annular line closely adjacent the lower edge of the outer flange and causing the body to he annularly grooved by and receive the lower edge of the outer flange, the gap between the lower edge and the inner flange being no less inwidththanihethicknessofthebody.

A container construction including an open ended body of relatively soft material, and an end therefor of relatively hard material, the end having a plate like closure portion and a channelled rim including an inner flange turned upwardly and outwardly from the plate like portion, and an outer flange connected thereto at the upper edge thereof, and having an inwardly and upwardly directed lower edge, the radial distance between the edge and the inner flange considerably greater than the thickness of the body, the inner flange deflecting the body radially outwardly from an annular line closely adjacent the lower edge of the outer flange and causing the body portion to be annularly grooved by and receive the lower edge of the outer flange, the annular gap between the lower edge and the inner flange being no less in width than the thickness of the body.

For use with a container of the class described, a channelled rim end construction therefor including an inner flange tapering upwardly and outwardly, and a downwardly and outwardly directed outer flange connected thereto at the upper edge thereof and having an inwardly and upwardly directed lower edge.

A container construction including an open ended cylindrical body of relatively soft material, and :3. end therefor of relatively hard ma.- terial, the end having a channelled rim including an inner flange turned upwardly and tapering outwardly and an outer flange connected thereto at the upper edge thereof, and having an inwardly directed lower edge, the radial distance between the edge and the inner flange being considerably greater than the thickness of the body, the inner flange deflecting the body radially outwardly, from an annular line closely adjacent the lower edge of the outer flange and causing the body portion to be annularly grooved by and receive the lower edge of the outer flange. i

A container construction including an open ended cylindrical body of relatively soft material, and an end therefor of relatively hard material, the end having a channelled rim including an inner flange turned upwardly and tapering outwardly, and counter flange connected thereto at the upper edge thereof, and having an inwardly and upwardly directed lower edge, the radial distance between the edge and the inner flange being considerably greater than the thickness of the body, the inner flange deflecting the body radially outwardly from an annular line closely adjacent the lower edge of the outer flange and causing the body portion to be annularly grooved by and receive the lower edge of the outer flange.

A container construction including an open ended cylindrical body of relatively soft material, and an end therefor of relatively hard material, the end having a channelled rim including an inner flange turned upwardly and tapering outwardly and an outer flange connected thereto at the upper edge thereof, and having an inwardly and upwardly directed lowerv edge, the
radial distance between the edge and the inner flange being considerably greater than the thickness of the body,"the inner flange deflecting the body radially outwardly from an annular line closely adjacent the lower edge of the outer flange and causing the body portion to be annularly grooved by and receive the lower edge of the outer flange, the channelled rim presenting a cross section in the form of an inverted V.
