Description

W. L. LAPE.
CONTAINER. APPLICATION FILED MAY 29, 1914;
1,130,988. Patented Mar. 9, 1915 HE NORRIS PETERSCQ, PHO10-LITHO.. WASHING TON. C4
WILLIAM I1. LAPE, OF MARKLETON, PENNSYLVANIA.
CONTAINER.
Application filed May 29, 1914.
To all w'i' 0m 2723 may concern Be it known that I, l/VILLIAM L. LAPE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Markleton, in the county of Somerset and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Containers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain improvements in containers and has relation more particularly to a device of this general character especially designed and adapted for use in connection with volatile liquids, such as hydrocarbons; and an object of the invention is to provide a device of this general character having novel and improved means whereby liquid may be discharged in or removed from the container with the possibility of evaporation being substantially entirely eliminated.
Furthermore, it is an object of the invention to provide a device of this general character wherein the liquid stored therein is effectively and positively protected against evaporation.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved container whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device is rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, all as Will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of the invention will be carefully defined in the appended claim. n order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure l is a longitudinal sectional view taken through a container constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention; Fig. 2 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view illustrating the key and its concomitant parts as embodied herein, said key being shown in applied position; and
ig. 3 is a view somewhat similar to Fig. 2, with the stopper member, herein included, omitted.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawings, 1 denotes the body of my improved container formed of any desired material and substantially inclosed except for the Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 9, 1915. Serial No. 841,866.
bung opening 2 which is adapted to be closed by the tap 3 in threaded engagement in said opening, the outer face of said tap 3 being provided with a threaded socket 4:, for a purpose to be hereinafter more particularly referred to.
The body 1 is inclosed within a casing or jacket 5 of any desired material and is operatively connected therewith through the medium of the rivets 6 which serve to maintain the body 1 and casing or jacket 5 in fixed spaced relation in order to afford a chamber A entirely surrounding the body 1 and which is adapted to be completelyfilled by water or other suitable liquid whereby it will be readily perceived that the contents of the body 1 are effectively guarded against the possibility of evaporation, which arrangement is especially desirable in the handling of hydro-carbons or other volatile liquids or substances.
The casing or jacket 5 is provided with an opening 7 in alinement with the bung opening 2 and is adapted to be normally closed by a tap 8. When it is desired to fill the body 1, the container is so adjusted as to have the openings 2 and 7 disposed upwardly when the tap 8 is removed and the key 9 is inserted through the opening 7 and the threaded extension 10 on the inner end of such key is engaged with the socket 4c, hereinbefore referred to, whereupon continued rotation of the key 9 will result in the release of the tap 3. In order that the desired axial rotation may be imparted to the key 9, the outer extremity is provided with the angular flange 11 disposed therearound and which isadapted to be engaged by a suitable tool, such as a wrench or the li (e.
The key 9 is hollow with its outer end open while its inner extremity has its walls provided with the perforations 12 so that the fluid within the body 1 may be drawn out, preferably through the medium of the pump, or the desired fluid may be discharged therein. It is to be observed that the imperforate portion of the key 9 is of a length in excess of the distance between the body 1 and the casing or jacket 5. Before the key 9 is inserted within the body 1, the plug 14 is directed therein in order that the openings 12 may be closed so that the possibility of escape of the liquid within the chamber or space A is eliminated. It is to be observed that the plug 14 is of such a length, when in applied position, as to contact with the closed end of the key 9 and to project beyond the open end thereof. I find it of advantage tohave the plug 14: tubular sothat the plug may be inserted within the key 9 with greater facility.
As is believed to be self-evident, when the container is to be rescaled the operation, hereinbefore set forth, is reversed.
From the foregoing description, it is thought to be obvious that a container constructed in accordance with my invention is of an extremely simple and comparatively inexpensive nature and is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled, and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without material departure from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several Copies of this patent may be obtained for parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice.
I claim:
A device of the character described com+ prising a hollow body, an outer casing surrounding said body and spaced therefrom, said body and casing being provided .with
a hollow key insertible the inner end of .the the adjacent portion alined openings, through the openings, key being closed and thereof perforated, the imperforate portion of the key being of alength in excess of the distance between the body and the outer casing, and a plug insertible within the hollow key for closing the perforations in the five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents,
