To all whom t may concern.'
Be itV known that l, JOHN F. W. KUHR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Neenah, in the county of Winnebago, State of Visconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Plug-Faucets; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which yit appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in faucets and more particularly to a faucet adapted for use in connection with barrels, casks or other similar containers for liquid.
An object of the invention resides in the provision of afaucet of the above character that may be applied permanently to the container, be the latter constructed either of metal or of wood, and which when not in use is positioned within the walls of such container and thus fully protected against injury during transportation.
A further object of the invention is to provide such an appliance as may be readily moved into or out of position to dispense the liquid, and one in which the valve or closure therefor A embodies novel means whereby the same may be conveniently opened or closed.
A still further object is to provide a simple and efcient means for securely retaining the valve in its normal or closed position, said meansv being automatic-ally released upon operation of said valve controlling means for the purpose of dispensing the liquid.
lVith the above and other objects of similar nature in view, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts set forth in and falling within the scopeof the appended claim.
In the drawing: Figure 1 is a fragmentary sectional view through a metal container showing the invention in position for transportation. Fig. 2 is a similar view with the parts in position to dispense the liquid. Fig. 3 is an end view thereof. Fig. t is a top plan view of the valve and its actuating means. Fig. 5 is a fragmentary sectional view showing the manner in which the device may be mounted in a cask or other wood container, and Fig. 6 is a detail sectional view'of the valve and its operating means.
Reference will now be had to the accompanying drawings in which the invention 1s shownas comprising a cylindrical shell A including a main or body portion 10 and a reduced portion 11, the latter being of a diameter less than that of the former and having slidably engaged in the bore 12 thereof a tubular faucet B. The body portion 10 of the shell A yis provided at its outer end with a wrench engaging portion 13, and adjacent said flange is both externally and internally threaded as indicated at 14, 14. The other or reduced end of the shell is likewise externally threaded and is provided in its bore with a packing space 15, suitable packing 16 being arranged therein and a gland 17 engaged on -this threaded portion whereby a tight joint for the faucet will be provided.
In Fig. 1 of the drawing there is shown the manner of positioning the shell A in a metal container C of ordinary type, the threads 111 of the body 10 being engaged in the usual threaded opening 1S found in such containers with the portion 13 bearing against the wall of the latter. It will further be noted in this figure that the inlet end 19 of the faucet B is disposed within the container and that the discharge end 19 thereof is housed within the bore 20 of the shell, this being the position assumed by the faucet when same isnot in use. With the parts 1n this position, when it ,is desired to ship the container, a plug 21 is engaged with the threads 14 of the body 10 whereby to close the entrance thereto and protect the faucet B against injury or displacement. To permit Vof removing the plug there is provided in its outer face a squared socket 22, in which is adapted for insertion a suitable wrench or other tool whereby the plug may be readily unscrewed.
Referring now to the faucet B,it will be noted that its discharge end 19 is beveled as at 23 and that covering the opening thereo'f is a gate valve 24C, said valve being hingedly secured as at 25 to the face of the tube so that it may be readily moved either toward or away from its seat as occasion demands. For the purpose of actuating the valve 24 there is provided a yoke 26 the legs of which straddle the tube B and are pivotally connected thereto as at 27, said legs converging at a point forwardly of the valve and terminating in a hand grip 28. Connecting the yoke Q6 and valve 24- is a link 28 or other flexible means one end of which is secured to the yoke adjacent the u handle 28 and its other end secured to the outer face of the valve. Thus when lifting on the handle 28 it is obvious that the valve 24 will be swung upwardly on itsl is reversed upon closing of the valve, it
again snapping past the lug` 29 upon downward movement of the handle. The valve 24 because of lts eccentric mounting with respect to the yoke 26, will thus be securely locked to its seat, it being necessary when operating the handle 28 to lift said valve, to exert suflicient pressure to overcome the spring 30 and carry same over the lug 29.
When it is desired to employ the device for the purpose of dispensing the liquid in the container, the faucet B is moved to the position shown in F ig. 2 by means of the handle 28, a stop nut 8l being engaged on the inner end of the tube to limit outward movement thereof with respect to the shell A. The handle is then swung upwardly to operate the valve in the manner as above described and, when the desired amount of liquid has been dispensed, again swung downwardly to close said valve.
There is further provided in the tube B a vent pipe 32 its outer end being likewise tube being disposed within the container and` carrying` a float 84 at its upper end whereby the latter will be retained above the surface of the liquid. This vent operates in the manner of the usual vents employed on vessels of a similar character and materially assist the faucet in dispensing the liquid.
In Fig. 5 of the drawing there is shown the method of employing the device in connection with a CaskV or other woodenV container, an opening 35 being provided in the wall thereof through which is inserted a threaded bushing 36, for engagement with the shell A, said bushing being formed with a flange 377 havingopenings therein for the reception of screws or other suitable secure ing means.
