Description
.|. F. SENER.
End-Gate for Wagons.
N.PETERS. PHOTD-U'HDGHAPNER, WASHINGTON. D C. 4
Patented Mar. 21,;1371,
abritait %tite5 JOHN AliRllDERICK SENER, v0F LANCASTER, PENNSYLVANIA.
Letters Patent No. 112,968,- dated March 21, 18.71.
IMPROVEMENT IN END-*GATES FOR WAGONS. Y
The Schedule referred` to in these Letters Patent and making part of the lame.
To all whom it may concefm Be it known that I, JOHN FREDERICK SENER, of the city of Lancaster, county of Lancaster, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful End- Gates for Wagons and Carts; and I do hereby declare the following to be an exact description thereof', reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon making a part ot' this specification, in whichy Figure 1 represents a top view of the wagon with the adjustable end-gate in the rear, showing its joints and hinges.
Figure 2 is a side View of the same with the endgate in its place.
Figure 3 shows a side view of the same with the end-gate down.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction of the end-gate as attached to the bottom and sides of the wagon, with plates, hinges, and fastenings to form an open orclosed gate, with incline chutes;
The yobject of my invention being to more easily unload the wagon by lowering the adjustable and hinged gate, so that it may form an incline chute, and unload potatoes, apples, turnips, or coal into a Vault or cellar' with saietyand despatch; when the gate is again raised to it-s place, as shown at ig. 2, iorming a convenient end-gate that does not occupy the room ofthe wagon.
A represents the body of the wagon.
B B are side plates, the height of the wagon-bed, attached permanently to the sides of the wagon, intended to be made of strong sheet-iron, and bent inward toward'the center of' the wagon, to form the gate, and projecting outward in the rear as a support for the adjustable and falling part of thecenter of the Gate. o At the ltops of these side plates hooks O C are`attached, to hold the center of the gate when raised.
A third iron plate, D, is permanently attached to the bottom of the wagon-bed A, with a hinge, E, at its outer end.
lo this hinge E one of the adjustable end-gates G is hinged and jointed, so that it may be lowered, as
at Iig. 3, or raised to a vertical position, as at iig. 2.
The other end of this adjustable gate G has also a hinge, H, to which the second gate J is hinged,-
jointed, and supported, and by whtch it is lowered or raised, and folds together so as to form a rm endate. g The two adjustable and hinged gates G and J have sides K bending upward, that when the gate is lowered it forms an incline-chute, the sides preventing the articles from falling to either side as they are emptied into a vault or cellar, or any receptacle to receive them.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is t A The construction of the end-gate, attached permanently to the bottom and sides of the wagon or cart,
by the plates B and D, with hooks or fastenings C C at the top, and an incline chute below, formed by two or more adjustable gates J and G, that are hinged so as to fold up together and form an open or; closed end-gate, when arranged, combined, and operated as herein described, and for the purposes set forth.
