. Leners Patent Ne. 109,965, dated Deeember s, 1870.
.IMPROVEMENT IN END-GATES FOR WAGONS.
To all 'whom it may concern: n
Beit known that we,1oDEu1oK F. S'rocmxe and CALVIN l. GREENE, both of Lawn Ridge, in the county of Marshall andin the State of Illinois, have invented a new and improved End-Gate for Tagons 5 Vand do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the annexed drawing making apart of this specification, in which like letters ot' reference refer to like parts, and in which- Figure l represents a perspective view; Figure 2, a side elevation of the end-gate as attached to the end of a wagon;
Figure 3, a view in detail in persl'iectivc of the hinge. of gate, showing it opened; l l
Figure 4, side view in detail of hinge,-showing it closed;
Figure 5, an end view of wagon and end-gate; Figure 6, a view in detail of spring bolt-holder; and
' Figure 7, views in detail of hasp and staple.
Like letters in the ditferent figures of the drawing indicate like parts.
This invention relates to an improved inode of hanging folding end-gates which are in two parts, and
to a spring bolt co-operating with an eye and a hasp for securing the gates, which 'secures them .immediately on closing them; also, to the method of adjusting and attaching the platform for the gates to open upon.
A represents the wagon sides.
B, the bottom.
G C, the end-gates, made folding, eaclu being hung upon a hinge, d, at the bottom and at the top of the same; a flange o n that part of the hinge which is screwed t-o the wagon-side embraces the latter, and in which another screw is inserted for further securing it. Y
lhe hinges are similar as to their joints to a carpenters rule, as seen more in detail in igs. 3 and 4.
Two sets of hinges arertupiircdfa pair to each gate, that securing the upper part of the gate heilig similar in construction to the one forming the hinge at the lower corner of the opposite gate, and rice versa.
The gate is strengthened by the cleats band c, that at b forming a strong support for the gate when the same is opened, and that at c carries the hook 'm of hasp, and the spring bolt n, with its support 7s, and the shoe f.
. The .left-hand gate carries the eye Z of hasp, and a shoe, f.
The cleats b e may be fastened with screws or similar holders.
Ihe spring bolt -n slides in eyes placed one above falling into the eye ofthe hasp l oil the other gate,
which passes through. aslot in the opposite hasp m beneath the bolt.
D is a platform for forming aplace on which to insert a shovel in unloading small produce, and is of the usual shape, but attached at pleasure to the wagon end by means of hooks, g g, at the ends of the inner sides, said hooks curving slightly upward .above the line of the surface of the platform enough to prevent the dislocation of the latter from its junction with the wagon bottom.
The ends` of the hooks are inserted in the correspending sockets i t' cut verticallyy in either of the lowerhinges c a, the` platform, of course, being held perpendicularly or slanting to admit the hooks into the sockets.
The staplesd Z receive the shoes j' f of the gates..
E is a cross-brace, securely fastened to the wagon end, covering the ,joint of' the latter and the platform.
The operationV ofthis invention will be obvious: by the peculiar ce'nstrue-tion and arrangement of the hinges the gatesfform a perfect joint with the sides of the wagon, so that 'it is impossible for small grain or dirt to pass through or otherwise clog the gate when closing it. p
Having thus fully described our invention,
What we claim thereinas new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination of the hinges a a., constructed and\`V` arranged as described upon the gates C Ovandsidcs of the wagon, with the bolt or fastener n and the removable platt'orm D, the whole arranged substantially in the manner and for the" purpose .as herein shown and set fo'rth.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing, we have hereunto set our hands this (it-h day ot' June, 1870.
RODERICK F. STOOKING. CALVIN I. GREENE.
