PETER YOUNG, OF WEST CHARLESTON, VERMONT.
END-GATE FOR WAGONS.
SPECIFICATION forning part of Letters Patent No. 259,259, dated June 6, 1882. Application-med April s, 188s. (No model.)
To all 'whom it may concern Be it known that I, PETER YOUNG, a citizen of the United States, aresidentof WestGharleston, in the county of Orleans and State of Vermont, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in End-Gates for Wagons; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making -a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 ofthe drawings is a representation of a top or plan view of my wagon end-gate, and Fig. 2 is a rear view of the saine. *Fig 3 is a detail view.
This invention has relation to 'endgates for wagons; and it consists in the construction and novel arrangement ot' thelaterally-hinged sections, their angle-hinges, the overlapping perforated cross-bars, and the catch-staples passing through the perforations or apertures of the cross-bars.
The invention also consists in providing the overlapping cross-bars with spring-latches, which are connected so that both of them can be lifted at the same time; and the invention further consists in combining with the laterally-hinged gate-sections an adjustable rope or chain stop, whereby the aperture made between the gate-sections, when partially opened, can be regulated, all as hereinafter set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, the letter A designates a wagon-bed, having the sides B and bottom O, the rear end ot' which projects a little beyond the end of the sides, for1ning a bearing, D, on which thc end-gate rests when closed.
The end-gate consists of two lateral sections, E and F, the latter being usually shorter than the former, but provided with horizon tal crossbars or cleatbars I at or near its upper and lower edges, the projecting ends K whereof extend over the upper and lower portions of the longer section, E, to meet the supplemental short cleat-hars I', with which the section E is provided. When the gate sections are closed the cleat-bars I and I abut against each other. Apertures or slot-perforations L are the cross-bars I, and catch-staples S, secured to the section E, pass through these apertures and atord means whereby the sections may be fastened together in the closed position. This may be effected by a vertical rod passing through the staples, or by means of springlatches N, engaging notches made in the heads of the staples, which are formed with inclined upper edges, as indicated at P. In the notched staples and spring-latches an automatic fastening is provided, which is preferable. In order that both spring-latches may be lifted at the same time in unfastening, said latches are de- ,signed to be connected by a wire or rod, R. Each section is. abutted against the end of its side wall, B, and is connected thereto by two or more angle hinges H, whereof the rear branches, G, are made in angular form, to ex tend around the corners of the sections and en gage the rear surface thereof, so as to form strong braces, as indicated in the drawings.
The side walls, B, are provided with loops or eyes T near their rear ends for the attachment of the binding-chain Z, which extends across the back of the end-gate and serves as opening apart beyond the required distance,
y which is regulated by the length of the chain.
When the chain is disconnected the gate-sections can be thrown entirely open, so as to extend laterally outward at right angles to the side walls at their ends. 1n order to eEect this the hinges are placed on the outside and the braces V are fastened at their upper ends a short distance in front ofthe ends ot' the side walls, as indicated.
Having described this invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
1. The wagon endgate consisting ot the laterally-hinged sections E F, their anglehinges H, the overlapping perforated crossbars I, and the catch-staples'S, passing through the apertures or perforations of the cross-bars, substantially as specified.
2. The wagon end-gate consisting ot' the hinged lateral sections E F, abutting against the ends of the sides ofthe Wagon, their anglehinges H, the 'overlapping perforated cross- 75 a guard or check to prevent the sections from ples S, passing through the apertures or per- In testimony that I claim the above I have forations of the cross-bars, substantially as hereunto subscribed my name in the presence specified. of two Witnesses.
3. The combination, with the sectional later- 5 ally-hinged endgate E F, the overlapping PETER-YOUNG.
cross-bars I, and the loops or eyes T ou the sides of the Wagon, of the adjustable binding- Witnesses: chain Z, attached to said loops or eyes and JAMES BENNETT, extending around tbe sections of the end-gate E. 0. BENNETT.
1o transversely,substantially as specified.
