' No. 89.939. Patented May 11, 1869 77227563.56@ f l y @5W N N duit-rd 5mn* si' am @uw sTEWAR'r NEILL AND ADAM P10K, or o'H-ILLlcoT'HE, 1.LL1NoIs.
Leners Patent No; 89,939, dazed May 11, 1869.
IMPRovEMENTmvr-:XTENSIQN END-BOARD Pon WAC-tons.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
Beit known ythat we, STEWART NEILL and ADAM'l PICK, both of the town of (lhillicothe, county of Peoria Vand State of Illinois, have invented an Extension End-` Boardand Bottom'for Wagons, or other vehicles, used for carrying grain, dorn, potatoes, coal, or other similar merchandise; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation -of the same, reference being i had to the annexed drawings, making a part of` this specication, in which.-
Figure 1 is a perspective view. Figure 2, longitudinal elevation. i Figure 3, a side elevation. v In these drawings, similar letters refer to similar parts. t
Y We attach, in place oi'4 the usual end-board, 4to the' rear of a Wagon, by means of a hinge or hinges, or
their equivalents, an end-board, B, whose length cor-j responds to the breadth of 'the wagon-bed and sides, and of a convenient width. u
To each end of this board B lar boardor side, C, in shape, a right-angled triangle, covering the juncture of the extensionbottom B with the wagon-bed, one of the sides ofthe right angle being screwed, or otherwise fastened tothe end of the extension-bottom piece B, the other side projecting toward and partly (perhaps several inches) over and along the face of the outer sides of the wagon-box.
This last-mentioned side of the` triangular piece C stands vertically when the bottom is extended, resting, by its point or upper angle, against apin, block,
is fastened a triangul b, or other stop, fastened tothe end of the wagon-box on either side of the same, or it may be retained in that position by a chain, rod, or other device.
The side-pieces and bottom-piece B, when folded up, completely close the end of the wagon-box A, the sidepieces G sliding jover the sides of the wagon, and thus closed, a snap, latch, catch, spring, a, or some such device, secures it in that position.I
The side triangular boards may be made to slide into v the wagon-box, but placing them on the outside is preferable. I
The operation of this deviceneeds little explana'f' tion,
a, it turns downward on its hinges until level with'the bottom or bed of the wagon, bringing the upper angles` of its-side-boards C Cl against the block or pin b, onl
the upper cornerof the wagon-sides von either hand,
thus forming a secure place for retaining' the grain, and
preventing its loss, while the shovel or other means is used to remove it from the wagon.- i
HavingA thus described our invention, y What we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is,' v
The combination ofthe pivot-blocks or stops b with the triangular sid es C, constructed substantially as described.
