Description

" @hildm ARTHUR G. WESTLAKE, OF LONDON, ONTARIO, CANADA.
SHOE-TONGUE FASTENER.
Application led November 10, 1913.
To all whom t muy con cern Be it known that l, ARTHUR GWVnsTLAKE, a subject of the King ofGreat Britain, and a resident of the city of London, in the county of Middlesex, in the Province of On-r tario, Canada, have invented a new and useful Shoe-Tongue Fastener, of which the folowing is a specification.
This invention relates to` certain new and useful improvements in shoe tongue fasteners, and has for its primary object to provide novel and effective means for securely fastening the upper end of a shoe tongue deprevented from either down or moving laterally Within sired position and slipping the shoe.
The invention consists in providing a twopart fastener, one part being carried by the tongue, and the other part by the shoe top, preferably by the top facing of suchrtop. The fastener is'of the button and socket snap type, and in connection with shoes wherein hooks are used for the laces, the uppermost hook on one side of the shoe top is so constructed as to be utilized as one member of the tongue fastener.
The invention will 'be hereinafter more fully described and then particularly claimed, and in describing the invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying ldiawiugs forming a part of this specificationand wherein:
lfligure 1 is la perspectlve view of a shoe f equipped with my improved tongue fastener. Fig. 2 is an enlarged vertical sectional View of a portion of the tongue and the top of the shoe showing the tongue in fastenedposition. Fig. 3 is a perspective vew of the two parts of the fastener in disengaged separated positions. y To put my invention into practice, I secure to the tongue 10 of'a shoe 1 1, one member of a two-,part fastener', the present illus- Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 23, 11915. serial No. 800,231.
tration showing a button member 12 as being secured to the tongue, this button member being of that type adapted to be forced into a socket in which it expands sufficiently to hold the two gether under ordinary strain. i' In the construction shown in Figs. l, 2, and 3, the shoe is of that 'type in which the lacings are engaged with hook members, and the socket member of the fastener which I employ is thereforey of a type having a socket 15 and a hook 16 which is secured in theshoe top facing 17, the socket 15 being on thrinner side of thefacing and the hook 16 being on the outer side of the facing.
he oneration will be obvious, as it will be observed that as the top of the shoe is closed around the ankle, the button 12 and socket 15 are inter-engaged in the manner shown in Fig.- :2 of the drawings, and the shoe tongue is thereby securely held against either downwardor lateral movement Within the shoe.
The button member 12 is placed on the tongue,as shown in the accompanying drawings,.a.nd the socket member 15 on the shoe top facing, since this permits of the utilization of the upper fastening both as a tongue fastener and as a hook for the lacing.
l-lavving thus fully described my inven tion, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is :h
The combination with a shoe and its tongue, of a two-part fastener for the tongue comprising a resilient ball member carried by the tongue and. a combined socket and lacing hook carried by the upper.
In testimony whereof, I have signed in the presence of .the two undersigned witnesscs. ARTHUR GU. WESTLAKE. L
