FASTENING FOR ARTICLES OF CLOTHING.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Eatent No. 701,313, dated June 8 1902. Application filed January 7, 1902. Serial No. 88,749. (No model.)

To all whom, it may concern.-

Beit known that I, JOHN M. DUFFY, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Fasteners for Articles of Clothing, of which the following is a specification.

My invention consists of a fastener for articles of clothing formed of independent tongues, which extend in the same direction from an attaching-plate, whereby a cord, lacing, or string, such as is employed for a pair of shoes or a garment, may be passed beneath the under tongue and then between the two tongues, so that the outer tongue presses the under tongue against the portion of the lacing, &c., beneath the same, and thus controls said lacing, &c., against slipping and loosening, the under tongue being also adapted to clamp the loose end portion of said lacing.

Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a member of a fastener for shoe-lacing embodying my invention. Fig. .2 represents a face view of the fastener in position on a shoe.

Fig. 3 represents a section on linea; cc, Fig. 1. Figs. 4, 5, and 6 represent longitudinal sections on line 1 y, Fig. 1, showing the difierent positions that a lacing assumes in applying the same to the fastener.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the figures.

Referring to the drawings, A designates a fastener, in the present case fora shoe-lacing,

the same consisting of the back plate B, the attaching-spurs C, the under tongue D, and

the outer tongue E. The tongues D and E are independent of each other, and both extend at their inner ends from said plate B, and their outer ends are separate and free.

In practice the members B D F. are made from one piece, the member or tongue D being cut from the member or plate B, leaving the side pieces B on the latter, and the member or tongue E being cutfrom the tongue D, said tongues being properly bent out from each other and from said side pieces and each tongue capable of moving independent of the other.

It will now be seen that in the example of the application of my invention to a shoe each flap of the shoe is provided with a fastener and a lacing, leaving one flap crossed over to the other flap and passed behind the under tongue D of the fastener on the latter- ,named flap, (see Fig. 4,) then returned to the other flap and passed under the outer tongue E of the fastener of the latter-named flap, and consequently between the two tongues, (see Fig. 5,) so that pressure is exerted on the under tongue, whereby it is forced against the portion of the lacing behind said under tongue, (see also Fig. 5,) thus clamping said portion against the side pieces B of the plate B, so that it is reliably prevented from slipping or shifting. The loose end portion of the lacingrnay, if desired, be drawn under the outer end of the tongue D, (see Fig. 6,) and so clamped by the lattter against the side pieces B, whereby it is nicely sustained and its slack taken up.

It is evident that when it is desired to loosen the lacings they are drawn out from the re= spective tongues and so released from the fastenings, after which they may be manipulated as usual in order to be disconnected from the hooks or studs on the shoe.

Various changes may be made in the details of construction without departing from the general spirit of the invention, so I do not desire to be limited in each case to the same,

Having thus described my invention, What Iclaim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. A fastener of the character stated, consisting of an attaching-plate, and a plurality of tongues extending therefrom in the same direction, having their outer ends free of each other and said plate, at the same side of the fastener.

2. In a fastener of the character stated, an attaching-plate and a plurality of tongues which latter are connected at the same end with said plate, the latter having side pieces, the under tongue being formed from said plate between said side pieces, and the outer tongue being formed from said under tongue, said tongues being free from each other and said side pieces, and their outer ends being on thesame side of the fastener.
