Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, CHARLES RADVANYI and FERDINAND KARZiss, subjects of the King of Hungary, residing at Bridgeport, in the county of Fair-field and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Ironing- Tables and Step-Ladders, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in a combined ironing table and step-ladder.

An object of the invention is to provide in a single structure an ironing table of the usual shape and construction and which may be readily converted into a step-ladder.

A further object of the invention is to provide a combined ironing table and stepladder in which the ironing table constitutes the rear support for the step-ladder when in use.

A still further object of the invention is to construct in a comparatively cheap manner, a combined ironing table and stepladder which is etlicient in the performance of its duties and which may be readily collapsed and utilize a minimum of space.

With the above and other objects in view which will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel construction and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described and then claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings by like characters throughout the several views and wherein Figure 1 is a perspective View of our device illustrating its use as an ironing table. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the same illus trating its use as a step-ladder. Fig. 3 is a bottom plane view of the same in folded or collapsed condition. Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view on the lines 4-4 of Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a side elevational view of a portion of one end of the device illustrating the manner of unfolding the ironing table sup port, and Fig. 6 is an end view of the device with the ladder locked in folded condition.

Referring more specifically to the drawings, the reference numeral 10 designates an ironing table or board provided with the usual curved or rounded end 11 and carrying upon its under face the strengthening or reinforcing bars 12. The table 10 carries upon its under face adjacent the end opposite the curved end 11 a transverse bar 13 for purposes to be hereinafter described. The under face of the table 10 adjacent the end 11 also carries a transverse bar 14 and hinged to said bar as at 15 is a second bar 16.

The bar 16 has suitably connected thereto upon either end a side stile or rail 17 and pivoted between the side rails 17 are the steps 18. These steps 18 are collapsible and caused to assume a position in alinement with the side rails 17 when the ladder is in a collapsed condition and carry upon their upper edges and centrally disposed thereof eyes 19 to be engaged by suitable staples 20, the staples 20 being driven into the rod 21. A brace 22 is pivotally connected to the rod 21 adjacent its upper end and at its other end is pivotally connected as at 23 to one of the strengthening bars 12.

The lower end of one of the side rails 17 and the upper end of the other side rail are each provided with an elongated slot 24 and adjacent said slots are cut away portions 25 i in transverse alinement upon both of said rails. The ends of the rails 17 each carry a pair of supporting legs 26 suitably braced by the cross bar 27. One of the legs 26 of each pair is preferably cut away as at 28 and has pivoted in said cut away portion adjacent the upper end a link 29 which has a sliding connection at its other end in the slot 24. The outer ends of the slots are preferably provided with cut away portions 30 for the reception of pins 31 carried by the links 29 that slide in the slot 24, which pins tend to hold the supporting legs in a steady condition when the same are unfolded. The lower end of the side rails 17 are provided with a rigid transverse reinforcing bar 32 which carries an eye 33 to be engaged by a hook 34 carried by the transverse bar 13, when the ladder is in folded condition.

When the device as above described is to be used as an ironing-board, the legs 26 are unfolded and the pins 31 carried by the links 29 move in the slot 24 toward the end provided with the cut out portions 30, which pins rest in the cut out portion and serve to steady the legs when in an extended condition.

When it is desired to use the device as a step-ladder, the legs 26 are collapsed or folded so that they lie juxtaposed to the side rails 17 of the ladder and in such position the links 29 are received in the cut out portion 28 of the legs 26, while the transverse bar 27 is received in the cut out portions 25 in the side rails 17 and presents a substantially plane surface on the bottom side. The hook 34 is then released from the eye 33 which will permit the side rails 17 carrying the supporting legs 26 to move outwardly. When the ladder section is caused to move outwardly, the link 22 which is pivoted to one of the longitudinal reinforcing bars 12, will shift the rod 21 and during such movement will cause the steps 18 to assume a horizontal position. It is to be noted that when the device is used as a step-ladder, the lower end of the ironing table constitutes the rear support and while we have not shown the curved or rounded end 1 1 of the ironing table as hinged to the main body portion 10, the same could be so cons ructed as to provide a top support for the ladder.

From the above description of the device, it is believed that the operation is clearly apparent and whilewe have shown and described the preferred embodiment of our invention, wedo not wish to confine ourselves thereto, as various modifications and arrangement of the parts as shown may be had without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.

We claim 1. In combination, an ironing board, a pair of spaced longitudinal bars secured to the underside of said board, a ladder pivotally-seeured at one end near one end of the board, and having its side bars formed on their outer edges with alined recesses, two pairs of legspivotally secured to the outer sides of the ladder side-bars, and having connecting transverse bars fitting said recesses, steps pivotally secured between the ladder side bars, a rod having link connections with the inner edges of said steps, and

a brace pivotally-connected at one end to the upper end of said rod and at its opposite end 1tao the inner side of one of said longitudinal ars.

In combination, an ironing board, a pair of longitudinal bars secured to the underside of the board, a pair of ladder sidebars pivotally secured to the board near one end of the latter, and formed on their outer edges with horizontally alined recesses, a transverse bar secured to the underside of said board at one end of the latter, two pairs of legs pivotally-secured to the outer sides of said ladder side-bars, transverse connecting bars for said legs fitting said recesses, steps pivotally-secured between the ladder side bars, a rod loosely connected to the inner edges of said steps, a brace pivotallyconnected at one of its ends to the upper end of said rod, and at its opposite end to the inner side of one of said longitudinal bars on the underside of the board, and connecting devices between the lower end of the ladder, and said transverse bar of the board, said legs being adapted to lie parallel with the ladder side bars.
