To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN T. COONEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city and county of Denver and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hat-Fasteners; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the characters of ref erence marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My inventionrelates to improvements in hat fasteners, my object being to provide a device adapted to be conveniently attached to the hat and which shall be constructed to secure the latter firmly upon the head and at the same time avoid the use of the ordinary hat pins, which, as is well understood,
are not only awkward but exceedingly dangerous.
Briefly stated, my improved construction consists in a centrally located rod, each extremity of which is equipped with a securing device as a safety pin, whereby the rod is adapted to be secured to the crown of the hat. Upon this rod are slid-ably and also rrtatably mounted two fastening members. Also, connected with each of the fastening members is a stem, whose function is to pierce the crown of the hat and extend therefrom on opposite sides for manipulating purposes. The exposed extremities of these pins are threaded to receive safety knobs which are screwed thereon.
Having briefly outlined my improved construction, I will proceed to describe the same in detail, reference being made to the accompanying drawing, in which is illustrated an embodiment thereof.
In this drawing: Figure 1 is a rear view of a hat equipped with my improved safety device, the body portion of which within the hat is indicated by dotted lines. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the device in detail, the same being shown on a larger scale than in Fig. 1. Fig. 8 is a view of the device showing the two members in different relative positions. Fig. 4: is a fragmentary view showing a modified form of construction.
The same reference characters indicate the same parts in all the views.
Let the numeral 5 designate a small rod, Whose opposite extremities are respectively equipped with safety pins 6, which are adapted to be connected with the crown of the hat. Arranged to cooperate with this rod 5 are two fastening members 7, each of which is composed of two U shape parts 8. The free extremity 9 of each of these parts is pointed, whereby it is adapted to readily enter the hair of the wearer for fastening purposes. The opposite end of each of these hook shape parts merges into a transverse part 29, in which is formed an eye 10, through which passes the rod 5, whereby each member 7 is freely slidable upon the rod. From this it will be understood that the two hook shape parts 8 of each fastening member are connected by a transverse part 29. These two parts 8 of each fastening device are further connected by a transverse part 12, whose opposite extremities 13 are fastened to the parts 8 at their bends 14, being preferably soldered or otherwise fastened to prevent movement. In this manner the two parts 8 of .each fastening member are made sufiioiently rigid for the proper performance of their function. Centrally connected, as shown at 16,with each of the parts 12 of each fastening member is a stem 15, which extends outwardly beyond the said member, being adapted to pierce the crown of the hat. The outer extremities of these stems are preferably formed sharp, as shown at 26, whereby they are fashioned to readily pierce the crown of the hat from the inside. The outer portions of these stems are also threaded as shown at 17 to receive ornamental knobs 18 which are screwed thereon, the inner portions 19 of the knobs consisting of sleeves which are interiorly threaded for the purpose. The inner extremities of the stems should be soldered to the parts 12 of the fastening members in order to make a rigid connection whereby the manipulation of the fastening members is facilitated.
In order to apply the device to a hat, the body of the article, or that consisting of the rod 5, the safety pins and the two fastening members 7, are placed inside the hat, together with at least one of the stems 15.
' This stem is then caused to pierce the hat,
after which the fastening member with which the last named stem is connected is moved outwardly on the rod 5 to its limit of movement. It will then be possible to so adjust the other fastening member as to bring its stem within the crown of the hat, after which it is caused to pierce the crown from the inside, its fastening member be ing also moved outwardly as far as desirable. The ornamental knobs are then applied to the outer extremities of the stems, after which the device is ready for use.
In explanation of the use of the device it may be stated that the hat equipped therewith is placed upon the head of the wearer in the usual manner. The fastening members are then moved inwardly, being manipulated by the wearer through the instrumentality of the exposed portions of the stems, the ornamental knobs being relatively large and thus facilitating the adjustment of the fastening members.
It will be understood from the foregoing description that it is not necessary that the two fastening members shall both occupy the same relative position with reference to the rod 5 upon which they are slidably mounted, since either member is free to turn on the rod and consequently the two parts 29 and 12 of each member, instead of occupying the same planes with the corresponding parts of the other member, may form angles thereto, thus making it possible under all circumstances to so adj ust the fastening members with reference to the hair of the wearer, as to get the most satis factory results. Attention is, however, called to the fact that in the form of construction shown in Figs. 2 and 3, if it is not desired that both members 7 should occupy the same relative positions, the change of position of the members must be made before the device is attached to the hat. For instance, if it is desired to use the device with the two parts 7 in the position illustrated in Fig. 2-3, the member 7 at the right, for instance, should be turned upon the rod 5 before its stem 15 is passed through the crown of the hat. Then the two members 7 may be adjusted, their corresponding parts moving in different planes. This may often be exceedingly advantageous to the wearer.
N ow, referring to the form of construction shown in Fig. 4, the stem 15 is bent as shown at 30, whereby the body of the stem where it passes through the crown of the hat is in line with the rod 5, the bent part forming a sort of crank arm within the hat. By virtue of this construction, the members 7 may be rotatably manipulated within the hat after the device has been applied thereto. It will be understood, however, that the crank portion 30 of the stem must always be within the cavity of the hat, while the straight portion, which is in line with the rod 5, passes through the crown of the hat.
