Description
LEvI s.` HICKS, oE PEoRIA, ILLINOIS, AssIeNoR roIIIMsELE, J. PERRIN OIINSOILy AND JOHNBUELL, OF SAME PLACE.
`Letters Patent Nol l12,455,dated March 7, 1871.
IMPROVEMENT IN DOOR-CHECKS.
` The ASchedule referred to in theseLetrers Patent and making part of the same.
y hTo all Ichomc't` may` concern: f l
` 'Be it known that LLEVI S. HICKS, of thecity of Peoria,.in the county of Peoria and in the NIllinois, have invented a Door-Cheek and Retainer; fand do .hereby declare that `the following is `a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being State of had to the annexed drawiugmaking a part of this' specification, in which like letters o'f reference referto like parts, and in Which-f y l Figure lrepresentsa perspective view.

Figure 4, f1-opt view of th eye.A
,l rllhisy inventionc'onsists in a combination of a-doorfender or stop anda retainer` or holder-.for the door.
Ais the doorjv f B, thebase-board or Wainscot, vto which .the stop. or retainer G is Vaflixed, either` by` prongs, h, and staples e e, or equivalent;l modes of fastening.`
C O is the retainer or door-check, which may be formed fof wirebent in staple-form, ass'eeu in iig. 3, the arms b b `bending down ward at a right angle, and again bent at a right anglefvto enter the "base-board or Wainscot,
's the arms b b serifing as a bearing to steadythe check or retainer. f
.y The point a is bent, as shown in the drawing, s o as `to be retained within the eye D onV the'door. y Theretainer mayalsobe made in theform of a v plate, with a base for tting and fasteningto the baseboard orwainscot, and with a shouldered point or 1 ,retaining-catcbas before described.
D, the eye which receives the catch a 'of the doorcatch, being simply an escutcheon-shaped eye with an inclined entrance, d, along which a point, a', of the catch slides, until the shoulder a a is .within the eye,
a recess, g, behind the eye, being cut in the door, that the point of catch x'nay not strike.-
The eye may be screwed 'o1' otherwise fastened to l the door opposite the point of the catch C. y
A staple would fill the place of the eye D., the front part being sufficiently bent downward to receive and retain the shoulder a a ofthe catch.`
The operation oi this device is as follows:
When the door is thrown back against the wall the l eye D receives'the shoulder-point a a of thecatch ou its inclined entrance d, and, passing into the hole of the eye,
the shouldera a is retained until the-door is required to be closed, which is donc bya slight'pull, and the leye is released from the retainer or door-check.
What I claim as my invention iS- The elastic single-wire spring-catch O, when secured Y to, the Wall as described, and combined with the eye or holder D, all substantially as and for the purposes',`
set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing' door check and retainer, I have hereunto set my hand this 24th day of' October, 1870.
