To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ELVEN NoRBo, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cashton, in the county of Monroe and State of lVisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Broom-Heads, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.

This invention relates to improvements in broom heads, and an object thereof is the provision of a head having a socket to receive the handle of the broom, the head be ing constructed to detachably support the broom straw Within the holder so that when the straw supported therein becomes worn it may be quickly removed and new straw replaced therefor.

A further object of this invention is the provision of a broom head comprising two sections, the main section of which is funnel-shaped and which is open on one side to receive the broom straw, the other section comprising a spring clamping plate which is adapted to be attached to the main section to securely hold the straw within the head.

With these and other objects in view, my invention consists in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a front elevation of a broom showing my improved head applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a section on the. line 2-2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a vertical section of the head applied to a broom. Fig. l is a section on the line 1- of Fig. 1 with the broom straw removed. Fig. 5 is a section on the line 55 of Fig. 1. Fig. 6 is a fragmentary elevation showing one end of the clamping plate engaged with the funnel-shaped section of the head. Fig. 7 is a fragmentary View of the device.

Referring more particularly to the drawing, the numeral 1 designates the handle of the broom, and 2 the straw which is to be supported in the broom head, which is generally designated by the numeral 3. The broom head comprises two sections which are constructed of spring sheet metal, the main section 4 of the head being substantially funnel-shaped and having flattened sides. A socket 5 is mounted in the upper or smaller end of the section to receive the handle, and one side Wall of the main section 4 is cut away at the larger end thereof to form an opening 6 through which the straw may be inserted into the head. The lower edge of the funnel-shaped member 4 is provided with a series of inwardly extending teeth 7 which are adapted to engage the straw, and the member is provided near its lower end on opposite sides of the opening 6 with apertures 8.

A clamping plate 9 which forms the other member of the head is provided to close the opening 6 in the main section of the head, the clamping plate having inwardly extending hooks 10 on the opposite side edges thereof which are adapted to engage in the apertures 8 to securely hold the clamping plate in its proper position over the opening. The lower edge of the clamping plate 9 is also provided with a series of inwardly extending teeth 11, the teeth 11 being disposed horizontally parallel with the teeth 7 on the main section, so that when the sections are connected a comparatively endless row of teeth are presented to engage the straw which is supported in the head.

In the practical use of my device, the broom straw is inserted into the main section of the head through the opening 6, so that the upper ends of the straw abut against the lower end of the socket 5, whereupon the clamping plate 9 is arranged over the opening 6 in the main section and forced toward the same so that the hooks 10 are allowed to spring into the apertures 8 to hold the sections together. It will be seen that when the clamping plate and the main section are forced toward each other, that the teeth 7 and 10 in the funnel-shaped section 4 and the clamping plate 9 respectively will be forced into the straw thereby holding the same rigidly within the head and preventing accidental removal of the straw therefrom. As both sections of the head are constructed of spring metal, to remove the straw from the head, it is only necessary to force the opposite sides of the member 4: toward each other so that the hooks 10 are released from the apertures 8, whereupon the clamping plate 9 may be removed from the section 4 and the old straw taken therefrom so that new broom straw may be replaced therefor.

The clamping plate 9 is preferably formed at its upper end with a reduced extension 12, the extension being ofi-set slightly from the plane of the body portion of the clamping plate, so that it may be engaged against the inner face of the wall of the section A above the opening 6 therein. As the extension 12 is offset slightly from the body portion of the plate 9 it will be seen that the body portion of the plate 9 will normally be spaced from the section 4: of the head, when the extension 12 is disposed between the inner face of the wall of the section A and the broom straw disposed therein. hen the clamping plate is moved inwardly so that the hooks 10 thereof engage the openings 8 in the section 4:, the hooks will firmly engage the walls of the openings owing to the tendency of the body portion of the plate to move outwardly because of the engagement of the off-set portion 12 of the plate against the inner wall of the section 4.

From the above description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, it will be seen that I have provided a broom head which may be quickly and easily applied to or removed from the broom straw, and one which comprises only two parts, so that the same may be cheaply manufactured.

lVhile I have illustrated my invention in connection with a broom, it will be readily understood that the same may be applied to paint brushes or the like, and that I do not limit myself to brooms.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:

1. A broom head comprising a funnelshaped member, one side of said member being cut away at its larger end to form an opening therein, said member having apertures formed therein on the opposite sides of the opening, a spring metal clamping plate having inwardly extending spring hooks formed on its opposite side edges, said plate being adapted for engagement over said opening to close the same, and said spring hooks being adapted to snap into the apertures on the opposite side of said opening to hold the plate in a position to close the opening.

2. A broom head comprising a substantially funnel shaped member, one side of said member being cut away at its larger end to form an opening therein, said member having apertures therein on the opposite sides of said opening, a spring metal clamping plate having an inwardly offset reduced extension at its upper end for engagement between the broom and the inner face of the member above the opening, said extension being offset from the body of the plate a slightly greater distance than the thickness of the wall of the member, whereby the plate is normally held spaced from the opening in the head, the plate having inwardly extending spring hooks formed on its opposite side edges, and the hooks being adapted to snap into the apertures on the opposite sides of said opening when the plate is moved inwardly to hold the plate in a position to cover the opening.

3. A broom head comprising a funnelshaped member, said member being cut away at its larger end to form an opening therein, said member having apertures formed therein on the opposite sides of said opening, a clamping plate having inwardly extending hooks formed on its opposite side edges for engagement in the apertures in said member, said plate having an inwardly offset reduced extension for engagement against the inner face of the member above the opening, and the lower edges of said member and said plate being formed with aseries of inwardly extending teeth.
