Description

sTARnUoH, on' SAME PLAGE.
y JOSEPH costanti., LnvrM, BoswnLu JONATHAN PALMER, AND lJONATHAN H. RJAMES," 0F WILMINGTON, OHIO, AssIGNORs To THnMsELVEs AND THOMAS Letters Patent No. 112,411. dated `March 7,1871.
IMPROVEMENT IN WASHING-MACHlNES'.
To allwlwmrit may concern:
. Be it known that we,1 JOSEPH BQSWELL, LEVI` M. Boswnnr., J oNATHANPALMnn, and JONATHAN l-I..
i J.AMns,iall of"Wilmiugtoiiin the vcounty oi Clinton and vStatefotQhimhave.invented certain Improvements in AWgr-shingt-,lilachines; andare declare the following-to 'bea-hdl, clear, and exact-description therebi', rcierencebcing had tothe-accompanying drawing, inxyhichf" n 'i 3. Figure:` l is adlongitndinal vertical section of our i improved washing-machine.
Figure 2 is a transverse section of the same in the line melig. 1.` i y Figure is `a perspective view-of one of the `India-rubber wings, detachedfrom the rubbing-cylinder. "i @Similar lettersof` reference indicate like parts in the-several figures of the drawing. l Y Our? invention has for its object to improve the `construction of washing-machines,-whereby the same are rendered more convenient and ei'ective in use, as
will-be hereinafter more fully described'. 1 In the thawing---`v r V .A'is.agrectangular bo'x, of suitable dimensions, di-
coinpartnients, B C, by a vertical parvided intolftwo tition, D. ,i `Each .compartmentisjprovided with a hinged cover, gopcniug outward from the enter or partition.
The cover for the compart n eiit or ends-boi:` B
l carries stirrer or dasher, H,`inrtl1e"followiug manner:
Through the center of` thc cover is placed a tube, e, whose headbears upon a fixed washer, f.
The main. portion ofthe crank-arm or handle g` h passes through the tube and through `the head oi' the dasher, and is provided with a screw-thread, by Whichit is attached to thes'eparts. L
A washer, `,jupou the under side of the cover, fit-s `over-"the tubeto holdit in place.
' By this construction the tube turns with the crankshaft Vand dasher and forms a more substantial bearing inthe cover.
, l These parts are easily reinovd'by simply unscrewl ing the dashcr, `as will -be readily understood.
, J is therubbing-cylinder, having its 'bearings in` thesides ofthe compartment O, and provided with a series ot'ywide radial wings, K, of India rubber.
l 'Thesewings are` applied to the cylinder by being fiirst `secured at one edge to a. series of lbevclcd strips of wood, Z,in the manner shown in iig. 3,
which strips are thenscrewed to the periphery-oi' the cylinder-headsm. 4
y YBy thisconstruction the wings can lbe removed separately, withoutintereriug with each other, should it, for any reason,} become` necessary.
N `isga `rubbing-board, composedof corrugated `metal, attached tothe upper end of the partition 1) zuidlextending downward in an inclined or curved i 1 `position between said partition and the rubbingpressure of the rubber wings when the cylinder is y rotated. p
'l'hc operation of thc lnachineis as follows:
The articles to be washed are first placed in the suds-box and the dasher rot-ated first in one direction two or three times, and then in thc opposite direction from two to three minutes.
By this movement the clothes are saturated with soap-sluis and a large proportion ofthe dirt r moved,
The clothes are then hung upon the partition D with one end within reach of 4the lmli-.L-rubber wings ot' the cylinder, the latter being rotated so that the wings shall move downward over the rubbingboard. y
rihe wings seize the clothes andcarry them downward 'over the rubbing-board,.from which they are delivered into the compartment C, under the cylinder.
By this operation the wings beat with a yielding blow upon the clothes, which arc also subjected to a rubbing action upon the hoard, and by the movement ot' the wings themselves. i
lThe board may be held rigidly to the partit-ion, or-oneor more springs may be interposed between the two to hold the rubber up to the cylinder.
It' the clot-lies are moved too rapidly by the cylinder they may be heldby one hand and fed through slowly. f
The cylinder maybe operated by a hand-crank attached to its shaft, by a trcadlc, orby any suitable motor.
li'ldesircd, thc boxA may be made without the suds-box B and its attachments, the cylinder and rubbing-board only being-used.
Having thus described our invention, That we claim as new, and desire Letters Patent, isu 1. ',Lhe combination of the vertical, corrugated, rubbing-board N and thc cylinder J, carrying the radial wings K, when said wings are extended to hear against thc rubbing-board, substantially asl described, for the purpose specified. `2. The \\-'ashing-machine, consisting of the box A, divided int-o two compartments, B G, by the partition D, the hinged cover,'thc removable dasher H, the cylinder J,having the radial `India-rubber wings K, and the vertical rubbing-board N, all arranged and operating substantially as and for the purposes to secure by Mnnvrnnn H AYES.
