Description

, UNITED STATES PATENT 4 OFFICE.
CHARLES D. HOFFMAN, OF CAIRO, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR T() MARY C. HOFFMAN, MARY HOFFMAN, AND MARY E. RENNE, OF SAME PLACE.
WASHING- MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming -part of Letters Patent No. 227,781, dated May 18, 1880.
Application filed December 19, 1879.
To all whom it 'may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES D. HOFFMAN, of Cairo, in the county of Greene and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Washing-Machine', ot' which the following is a specification. l v
Figure l is a plan ofthe washer. Fig. 2`is K a longitudinal sectional elevation of the same on line w x, Fig. 1.
Similar letters ofreference indicate correspondin g parts.
Myinvention is an improvement in the class of washing-machines in which a suds-box is mounted on rollers that run on horizontal rails and is reciprocated by means of a crank and pivoted connecting-rod.
My invention consists in providing a sudsbox with side bars, which are extended beyond the ends ot' thel same, and are thus adapted to subserve the double function of supporting rails, that run on fixed rollers, and of handles, by which the suds-box may be lifted on and oft' t-he rollers or carried from one point to another.
In the drawings, A indicates a skeletonframe having three sets ot' uprights, a a a. The upper ends of the four uprights a have open slots d, in which rollers B are journaled, and on these rollers the suds-box' C D is supported by the means of the combined side rails and handles, E. The said rails are narrow wooden bars attached horizontally to opposite sides of the suds-box, near the top thereof, and are of about double its length, so that they project beyond the ends of the suds-box. The latter is reciprocated by means of the rod F and crank-shaft G. Said rod is connected and passing to and fro on the rotating rollers B. The open slots in the upper ends of the uprights a allow the suds-box C to be placed on or lifted off the rollers without hinderanoe,
and for this purpose the projecting ends of the rails E E serve as handles, which are seized and held, one in each hand, by two persons. The same means-to wit, rails E ,constitute the handles by which the sudsbox is carried to and from the water-heater or elsewhere, as required. The interior ot' the suds box has corrugations f, and the cover D is secured by means of a turn-button, g.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is- In a'washing-machine of the class hereinbefore described, the combination, with the crank-rod adapted for detachment, as speciiied, and the uprights a, having open slots, and the rollers B, journaled therein, of the suds-box C D, having the side bars, E E, lwhich are attached to the sides and project beyond the ends thereof, to adapt them to serve as trav eling and supporting rails, and also as handles for use in lifting and transporting the sudsbox,- as'shown and described.
