Description

-PATENTEB JUL 25 1871 UNITED STATES DEOATUR WERST, OF SOUTH BEND, INDIANA.
IMPROVEMENT IN WASHING-MACHINES.
Specification forming part 0f Letters Patent No. 117,353, dated July 25, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DECATUR WERST, of South Bend, in the county' of Slt. Joseph and State of Indiana, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Washing-Machines 5 and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming a part of the same, and in which- Figure l represents a vertical central section of my washing-machine with a portion thereof in elevation exhibiting the manner of journaling the rollers in the main cylinder or that one which receives the articles to be washed, and Fig. 2represents a horizontal section of the same.
Similar letters of reference in the two figures refer to like parts.
This invention has reference to an improved washing-machine; and it consists of an enlarged cylinder or receptacle which receives the articles to be washed or cleansed, having its periphery composed of rollers, every alternate one of which being loosely journaled within said cylinder and its inner sides or heads supplied with wedgeshaped rubbers or bars arranged radially therein, in combination with an auxiliary cylinder revolving upon an axle in the center of the said enlarged cylinder and having its circumference composed of convex ribs or bars, substantially as hereinafter more fully set forth.
To enable others to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe it.
A in the annexed drawing refers to a cylindrical case or receptacle, which is divided into two parts, hinged together, as shown in Fig. l, whereby the upper half of said case forms a lid or cover for the lower half thereof, the said latter part having its sides or heads extending beyond its periphery and of a partially rectangular shape, and supplied with'legs for supporting the case above referred to. B refers to another cylinder, the periphery of which is constituted of rollers, every alternate one of which is loosely journaled within said cylinder for the purpose of giving downward motion to and preventing the articles being washed from being elevated too high, whereby they are prevented from being whirled over and tangled. Secured to and arranged radially upon the inner sides of the heads or sides of the said cylinder B is a series of wedge-shaped bars or strips, b b, furnished with convex surfaces, and are for the purpose of assisting in washing the articles being cleansed. This cylinder is supplied at each endwith a-n axle having bearings upon the cylinder A; one of said axles being made to extend through the latter-mentioned cylinder sufficiently far from it as to readily receive a crank or handle, b, by means of which the former cylinder may be operated or revolved. C refers to a small cylinder revolving upon studs or projections c c fastenedto the inner sides of the heads of the cylinder B, and having its periphery composed of convex-shaped slats or bars; the object of said small cylinder being to assist the cylinder B (inclosing it) in performing the work of cleansing the articles beingwashed.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
The cylinder B, having alternate loose rollers and radially-arranged bars or strips b b, in coinbination with the auxiliary cylinder C and case or receptacle A, constructed and arranged to operate substantially as shown, and for the purpose described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have hereunto signed my name this 13th day of June, A. D. 1871, in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
DECATUR WERST.
