CHARLES C. ABBOTT AND LANRENCE HALE, OF BIRMINGHAM, ALABAMA.
CLOSET.
Application filed October 11, 1912.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, CHARLES C. ABBOTT and LAWRENCE HALE, citizens of the United States, residing at Birmingham, in the county of Jefferson and State of Alabama, have invented new and useful Improvements in Closets, of which the following is a specification.
The general object of this invention is the provision of a closet particularly adapted for use where it is impractical to obtain a water supply for flushing purposes, said closet being so constructed as to be perfectly sanitary, and to this end the invention consists of certain novel arrangements, constructions and combinations of devices which will be fully described hereinafter and then pointed out in the appended claim.
In carrying out the object of the invention generally stated above, it will be understood, of course, that the essential features thereof are susceptible of changes in details and structural arrangements, one preferred and practical embodiment being shown in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a side elevation of the closet, showing the housing therefor in section. F 2 is a vertical longitudinal section. Fig. 3 is a front elevation. Fig. 4 is a section on the line 41 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings, 5 indicates a housing of any preferred construction, the floor 6 thereof being provided with an opening 7 for receiving a metallic casing 8 of semi-circular formation and having an open end for the reception of a removable receptacle 9 which latter is held in position by means of a catch 10 formed upon the casing 8, said catch being adapted to engage the flange 11 of the said receptacle. The body 12 of the closet is also made of some suitable metal such as galvanized iron, or the like, and is mounted directly above the casing 8, said body having the usual top flange 13 to which is hinged the seat 14, the latter having a cover 15 hingedly connected thereto as indicated at 16. The seat 14: has depending therefrom an annular flange 17 which is adapted to effectually close the space between the said seat and the top flange 13 when the former is in a lowered position. The body 12 at the rear and adjacent the bottom thereof has connected Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 5, 1915.
Serial No. 725,289.
thereto a vent pipe 18 which extends exteriorly of the housing 5, as shown.
Interiorly thereof and intermediate the top and bottom, the body 12 has surrounding the same an angular flange 19 which forms a water receptacle which is adapted to act as a sanitary seal for the closet, the said receptacle being provided with a cover 20 having a depending flange 21 adapted to extend into the water receptacle, said cover being pivotally mounted upon a rod 22 which extends transversely of the body 12. The water receptacle is supplied through the medium of a pipe 23, one end of which communicates with the said receptacle while the other end is connected to a reser' voir 2 1, the admission of water into the re ceptacle being controlled by means of a valve 25 located in the pipe 23.
When in its normal position, the cover 20 of the water receptacle closes the same and in order to move said cover to a vertical position there is provided a lever 26 which is pivotally mounted transversely of the front of the body portion 12, said lever having secured upon one end thereof, a weight 27 for maintaining the same in its normal position. The lever 26 is fixed to a rod 28 which is journaled in the body 12 and which is provided with an arcuate portion 29 intermediate the ends thereof, said portion being adapted to engage the under side of the cover 20 so that the latter is raised when the said rod is turned in a manner to he presently described.
The end of the lever 26 opposite to that which carries the weight 27 has connected thereto one end of an operating rod 30, the other end of said rod being secured to the seat so that when pressure is brought to bear upon the latter, the rod 30 will be forced downward and the lever 26 will be rocked thus causing the arcuate portion 29 of the rod 28 to raise the cover 20.
Another means is provided for raising the cover 20 without bringing pressure to bear upon the seat and said means consists in providing a foot operated lever 31, the upper end of which is connected to the lever 26 so that the latter may be rocked by pressing upon the pedal 32.
What is claimed is A closet including a body member adapted to be supported upon a fixture, a receptaole removably supported beneath and in communication With the body member, a Water container arranged Within the body member, a cover cooperating With the Water container to close the lower portion of the body member against the upper portion, a rod connected to the cover and extending beyond the body member, a lever fixed upon said rod, a Weight carried by one end of the lever, a seat normally closing the upper end of the body member, and a connection between said seat and lever to actuate the cover in the movement of the seat in either direction.
In testimony whereof We affiX our signa- 15 tures in presence of two Witnesses.
