Description

J. D. AVEBELL.
` Commodes. No. 143,488. y Patemedoct. 7,1873.

JOHN D. AVERELL, VOF NEW YORK, Y.
IMPROVMENT iN CWMOES.
Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. 143,45Q, dated October 7, 1873; application filed March 15, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I JOHN D. AvnnnLL, of the city, county, and tate of New York, have invented a new and Improved Commode 5 and that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
This invention is in the nature of an improvement in commodes; and the invention top of this vessel is an annular tank, B. This tank is of the same diameter as the'top of the vessel A, but is higher at the back than at the J'ont, to which it gradually slopes. Into the bottom of the annular space C is-formed an opening, D, for the convenience of the user. Surroimding the opening D, on its under side, is an inclosure, E, open at its bottom side, but closed by a valveF. Immediately under the edge of the opening -D is secured a pipe, a, with perforations or holes therein. APassing up through the tank Bis a rod, b, the lower end of said rod being affixed to a lever, c, which is secured to the valve F, so that, as the rod b is pulled up or down, said valve opens or shuts against the edge of the inclosure E. From the bottom of -the tank B issues a pipe, d, leading into the pipe a, the pipe d having a cock or valve, h, therein, which is connected by a lever, e, to the rod b, so that, as the rod is raised, the valve F is opened, and the cock h is likewise opened.
Having thus described the construction of my commode, its operation is as follows: The annular tank B being filled with water through the opening i formed thereon for that pur-` pose, the rod b is pulled up, which opens at the same time the valve F and the cock h, allowing the water from the tank to flow through the pipe d and through the perforations in the pipe a, filling more or less with water the space inclosed under the hole D. The valve F projects beyond the edge of the inclosure E, and has formed around this projecting edge a raised lip, f, so that there will be at all times a deposit of water between the lower edge of the inclosure E and the outer edge of the valve F, producing in this way a hermetic seal, which will effectually prevent unpleasant odors from rising from the vessel A through the opening into the room.
To make a tight joint between the tank and the lower vessel, packing of ,any kind may be introduced at their point of juncture.
' Vhen the commode is in use, as by an invalid, the tank B, as will be readily seen, affords a support for the back and arms of the sitter.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A commode having a lower vessel with annular tank fitting on the top thereof, in such manner as to afford a rest for the back and` arms of the sitter.
