To all whom it may concern.:
Beit known that l, JULIAN DEs'rii, of Medford, in the county of Middlesex and State ot Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements inValves for Water-Closets, 8vo., of which the following isa full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to a valve and connecting parts to be used in the water-supply tank of a water or urinal closet, Ste., of dwell ing-houses or other buildings, for the purpose of regulating the discharge of water from the tank into the closet-bowl, Svc., and the admission of air and the conducting of the overflow of the tank, should it occur, into the discharge' pipe leading from the tank to the bowl, Snc.; and the invention consists, principally, in the combination, with a tank suitable to contain water or other liquid, and having a discharge pipe or passage which leads therefrom for the discharge of the liquid contained in the tank into the bowl ofa water, urinal, or other closet, Src. ,used in the water system of dwellinghouses and other buildings, of a valve to said discharge-pipe, which is hinged at one side to a suitable support therefor, and is adapted to be connected to alever or other suitable mechanisin by which to open` and to close it, or to allow it to close, and, together with said discharge pipe or passage, is also adapted for a seating of the valve to close said discharge pipe or passage to the flow of liquid from t-he tank, preferably at an angle of inclination in relation to the vertical direction of said discharge pipe or passage, and of an airpipe, which may also be adapted as an overilow for the tank, that opens to said discharge pipe or y passage, and has its said opening or passage leading therefrom to said dischargepipe, constructed and otherwise adapted to produce, when said valve is opened andas the liquid flows through it from the tank into said disehargepipe, asealing or trapping of said open` ing or passageby theliquid so iiowing into and through said discharge pipe or passage to the entrance of air thereat, and thereby into said discharge pipe or passage.
In addition to the above, the invention consists of other improvements in details hereinafter fully described.
In the drawings, Figurel is a central longitudinal section of a tank to a water or urinal closet and its discharge-passage, having the present improved valve and air-pipe connection therewith, and showing in side elevation a lever and connection for opening the valve. Fig. 2 is a plan view of Fig. l. Fig. 3 is an elevation, on a reduced scale, illustrating a modification in construction, to be hereinafter described.
ln t-he drawings, A is a water-tank, and B is an opening through its bottom C, at and in which watertight connection is made in any suitable manner between the water-chamber of the tank and a dischargepipe, ll), for the tank, and which is to lead to the bowl of a water or urinal closet or other suitableiixture or place at which it is desired to use the. water of the tank.
E is a vertical shell or casing located within the water-chamber of the tank A, and at its lower open end, F, connected, as shown, or otherwise, with a water-tight joint to the openinginto the tank of the discharge-pipe D. This shell E at its upper open end, G, receives an air-pipe, H, which may also be adapted, as shown, Fig. 1, to act as an overiiowpipe to the tank, and at its side J it is provided with a branch passage, K, which enters at an angle of inclination the vertical passage L of the shell E, and at its upper and open end, L, is made with a seating-edge, a, eX- tending with a downward and outward inclination from the vertical axis of the shell E.
L? is a valve-plate for closing and seating upon the edge ofthe open end L of thebranch passage K of the shell E. The seating-face of the valve L is provided with a washer or packing, d, of leather or other `suitable material, secured in place by a screwnut, M, which screws upon a screw-bolt, N. passing through the center of and screwing into the valve and passing loosely through a lever, P, and by a screw-nut, 0, fastened to said lever. This lever P is suspended at one and its upper end from fixed eaupieces Q, of the casing or shell E, so as to be swung thereon for opening and closing the valve L to the passage of water from the tank into said shell, and thence into the discharge pipe or passage D, with which it is connected, as described.. The lever P at its lower and outer end, f, has an eye, g, connected by chain h' to one end, k, of a horizontal lever, R, which is located and ICO turns upon a fulcrum-pin, l, at the top ofthe tank and is connected by a chain, m, or iu any other suitable manner, for operation from the door, seat, floor, or other part located at the bowl of the water or urinal closet, &c., and such being the case, it is plain that through a movement of the operating-lever in one direction the valve can and will be raised from its seat to open it, and on a release of said operating-lever and its movement in the other direction the valve is left free to close, which it will then do.I The opening of the valve, as above described, secures the discharge of water from the tank through the dischargepipe thereof, and its closing the shutting off of said discharge ofthe water. t
v S is a vertical inclining closed partitionwall, which crosses the vertical passage L of the shell, and extends from the upper side of the branch passage K and toward the opposite side wall ofthe shell E.
T is an an opening at the lower end of this partition-wall, between it and the wall U of the shell. This opening T makes communication between the upper and lower sides of the shell-chamber for the passage of air or water entering at the upper end of the air and overflow pipe H, connected above said partition to the shell, as before described. The lower end of the partition S has an lextension or lip, n, which projects toward the center of the chamber or vertical passage of the shell, and this lip, with a horizontal partition, V, situated below it, makes a horizontal throat or passage, W, in communication wi-th the passage T at the lower end of the partition S, and with the chamber of the shell directly in front and opposite to the side passage, K, having the open and closing valve L2, as before described. r
The partitioning of the water passage or chamber of the shell above described secures, when water is flowing from the tank through said chamber, a water-seal or trap of the throat W to the entrance of air through it as the water is so running or flowing, and thus prevents all rumbling or gurgling or other disagreeable noises, which would occur were the air from the overdow-pipe allowed to enterthe discharge-pipe as the water is so flowing. The portion r of the attaching screw-bolt N which iswithin the lever P carrying the valve is square sided, itting the corresponding square-sided opening in the lever, and thus rotation of the valve upon its lever is prevented. The valve is allowed a slight play to and from its carrying-lever P, limited by the nut O of the bolt N, so as to insure its seating. The valve may be hinged directly to the valve casing or shell, and also adapted to be connected directly to its operating mechanism, in lieu of through a lever, P, as described. Again,the seat of thevalve may be horizontal, as shown in Fig. 3, instead of inclining verticaliy, as shown in Figs. l and 2, and as particularly described.
The partitioning of the chamber or passage L of the shell, as described, while securing the result aimed at to a very effective extent, may be changed or modied in some respects--as for instance, by dispensing with the vertical inclining part S thereof and using only the horizontal shelf V, and yet prevent disagreeable noises occurring as the water enters and flows through the open valve and dischargepipe D; but it is preferable, however, to construct the partitioning substantially as described.
A valve hinged on one side and adapted to be connected to operating mechanism, which may be of any of the Well-known or other forms suitable for lifting it and closing it or allowing it to close, plainly allows of a suitable connection being made directly with an operating-lever, for instance, in many positions thereof, and is not limited simply to a location of the connecting end of the operating-lever directly over and in line with the axis of the valve, as is the case with valves moving in a direct vertical line when opened and closed.
The end of the lever P of the valve L2 connected to the operating-lever R is preferably turned upward, as shown, and in the opening of the valve the air-pipe H acts as an abutcommunicating passage between overliow andl discharge pipes, to secure, when the valve is opened in the discharge of liquid from the tank, a seal or trapping of the overflow-pipe against the entrance of air through it to the dischargepipe, substantially as described, for the purpose specified.
2. In a tank for liquid, having a dischargepipe and an overiiow-pipe connected to said discharge, the combination of a valve arranged to open and close said discharge, and partitions S Vin said discharge, constructed and arranged to make a throat, W, and to operate in the discharge of liquid from the tank, substantially as described, for the purpose specied.
