AM. PuoTo-ummmPH/c 00. MY, (osaamvs's moczss) NITED STATES THOMAS BARRETT, OF NEW YORK, NAY.
IMPROVEMENT IN PORTABLE WATER-CLOSETS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 139,531, dated June 3, 1873; application filed December 11, 1872.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, THoMAs BARRETT, of
the city, county, and State of New York,
have invented a new and Improved Portable Closet; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification, in which drawing- Figure 1 represents a longitudinal vertical ection of my invention. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section of the same in the plane .10 a), Fig. 1. Similar letters indicate corresponding parts. This invention consists in a portable watercloset, the receiving-bowl of which connects by a pipe with a pump inclcsed in a watertank, which forms part of the case inclosing the entire apparatus in such a manner that by operating the pump the bowl can be readily washed, and the deposit left in the bowl is swept down into a reservoir below, which when filled up can be readily lifted outand emptied.
in the drawing, the letter A designates a case, which is divided by a partition, a, in
' two compartments, B (J. The compartment B forms a water-tank in which is situated a pump, D, the piston-rod of which extends up through the top of the case, and is provided with a handle, b, so that it can be readily operated by a person occupying the seat E. This seat extends over the compartment 0 of the case A, and beneath its aperture 0 is placed the bowlF. This bowl is set into. the top of a reservoir, G, and the bottom of said bowlis closed by a trap-valve, d, which is balanced by a weight, sothat it opens whenever the bowl is partially filled, and when the bowl is empty said valve closes automatically. From the pump D extends a pipe, e, into the sideot the bowl F, so that by operating the pump a stream of water can be injected into the bowl.
By these means the deposit left in the bowl can be readily washed down into the reservoir G by the person occupying the seat E, and as soon as the bowl has been emptied the valve (1 closes and the odor of the deposit is prevented from escaping. The reservoir G is provided with a bail or handle, by means of which it can be readily lifted out of the case A whenever it is desired to empty and clean the same.
The pump is suspended in the reservoir B much below the top of the case, as shown, in such a manner as to admit of the .case being made of a rectangular form, whereby a neat and compact device is produced; and further by the employment of the pump all cumbersome and elevated tanks are dispensed with and the pump can be made to fill up the reservoir with water.
From this description it will be understood that my portable water-closet can be used with advantage in sick rooms or hospitals, and it can also be used in country houses or other places where the water-closets are generally erected at some distance from the main building.
I do not claim a water-closet wherein an elevated tank is employed for supplying water to the bowl for washing down into -a vessel fecal matter, for such is old and well known but What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The pump D provided with a handle, d, and suspended within the tank B belowthe top of the case, in combination with each other and with the pipe 6, bowl F, and tank G, substantially as described, for the object specified.
