EDMUND R. ANGELL, OF DERBY, NEW HAMPSHIRE.
PRIVY.
SPECIFECATION forming; part of Letters Patent No.33'7,5'-16, dated March 9. 1886.
(MotleL) f5 ToaZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that l, EDMUND R. ANGELL, of Derry. in the county of liockingham and State of New Hampshire, have invented a new and Improved Privy, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved privy, which is odorless, prevents the poisoning of the atmosphere, prevents the pollution of wells by keeping filth from the soil, is not apt to get out of order, and can be cleaned without producing any bad smells either at the privy or during transportation.
The invention consists in parts and details and combinations of the same, as will be fully set forth and described hereinafter.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional elevation of my improved privy. Fig. 2 is asectional plan view on the line 00 0:, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a plan view of part of the under side of the cover of the vault. Fig. iis a detail sectional view. Fig. 5 represents my improved closet in perspective, the seat being partially raised and the box partially withdrawn.
The seat A is provided with one or more holes, B, each having a cover, 0, which fits air-tight, and below each hole a hopper, D, is secured air-tight to the under side of the seat, each of which hoppers has an exterior flange, E, a short distance above the bottom, and which flanges rest upon the top F of the vault G, and are held in place by a button, H, pivoted on the top of the vault. The top of the vault has an opening, I, below each hopper, through which openings thelower ends of the hoppers pass, and which openings can be closed by a disk, J, each resting against the under side of the top F and secured to the swinging end of an arm, K, passed through a guide, K, on the under side of the top Fand a short distance from the opening or .hole I. The arm K is preferably made of a quite stiff spring-bar, which assists in holding the disk J against the under side of the top F. The arm K is secured to a vertical shaft, L, mounted to turn on its longitudinal axis in the top F of the vault and to slide slightly in" the direction of its length in said top, the shaft being pressed upward by the free end of a spring. M, secured to the under side ofthe top F, and having its free end rested against the lower end of the shaft L. Each shaft L is provided at its top with a collar, N, and above the same with a squared part, 0, which fits a squared Socket, 1?, in the lower end of a rod, Q, mounted to turn and slide on its longitudinal axis in the seat A, and provided with a handle, R, on its upper end. The rod Q, has a shoulder or notch, S, for engagen'ient with a latch, T, pivoted on the seat and pressed by a spring, U, against the rod Q.
The shaft L is provided with a notch or groove, V, for receiving a latch, WV, pivoted on the upper surface of the top F of the vault G and adapted to be passed into the notch V.
a is an outlet-pipe, which can easily be detached from the top F, and conducts the gases of fermentation, 8m, into a pit in the ground, partly filled with charcoal, b, stones, 860., covered with earth. The pipe has a cock, (1, which is on that part of the pipe that remains on the top F when the main part of the pipe has been disconnected to allow of the removal of the vault, and by closing the cock nothing can escape from the vault.
The entire device is to be placed in the lower part of the privy-building m, or it may be placed in a box located anywhere in the house. An angle-1ever,i",is pivoted transversely under the seat in the box. When the seat is lowered, the lever r is in the position shown in Fig. l, and to raise the seat the lever 9 is swung into the position shown in Fig. 4, and raises the seat, thereby drawing the lower ends of the hoppers D from the top of the vault G, so that the vault clears the lower ends of the hoppers and can be withdrawn.
The operation is as follows: The disks J keep the lower ends of the hoppers closed. To use the privy, the latch T of a rod, Q, is pressed toward the rod to release the same, whereupon the rod is forced upward a short distance by the spring M, and the pressure on the disk J is removed. The rod Q is then turned on its longitudinal axis, and thereby the disk J is swung from the hole 1. After use the rod Q is turned to swing the disk J back' again, and is forced down to bring the spring M in tension, and to press the disk J ICO against the under side of the cover F and form a tight joint. The latch T locks the rod Q. in place. Vhen the vault G is to be removed, the hoppers D are released, the seat A is raised, the shafts Lare locked by means of the latches WV, to keep the disks J pressed firmly against the under side of the top 1 the pipe a dis connected, and the vault taken away and emptied. -When emptied it is again placed under the hoppers and connected with them.
2. The combination, with a. priv seat, of
hoppers on the under side of same, a vault below the hoppers connected with the same, ShaftsIin the top of the vault, arms on said shafts, and disks on the ends of said arms, the disks being on the under side of thetopof the vault, substantially as herein shown and described.
3. The combination, with the privy-seat, of the vault G, the shaft L in the top of the vault, the springarm K on the lower end of the shalt, the disk J on the end ofthe arm K and pressed upward thereby, and the detachable handle-rod Q, for turning the shaft L,
substantially as herein shown and described.
4. The combination, with the privy-seat A, of the vault G, having a top, F, provided with the opening I, the shaft L, the arm K on the same, the disk J on the arm, the spring M, pressing; the shaft L upward, and the rod Q, having the handle R, substantially as herein shown and described.
5. The combination, with the privy-seat A, of the vault G, having a top, F, provided with the opening I, the shaft L, the arm K on the same, the disk J on the arm, the spring M, pressing the shaft L upward, the rod Q, having the notch S, and the latch T, substantially as herein shown and described.
6. The combination, in a privy, of a removable closed vault with a detachable pipe, a, leading from the vault to earth, and a stopcock, (Z, in that part of the pipe that remains on the vault, whereby the excess of gases will be conducted to earth and the equality of pressure maintained in the vault, substantially as set forth.
7. The combination, with the privyseat A, of the vault G, having the top F, provided with the opening; I, the shaft L, having the notch V, the latch W on the top F, the arm K on the shaft L, the disk J on the arm, and the rod Q, substantially as herein shown and described.
