BOXu
To all whom-it may come m7 Be it known that T, OSCAR RAADE, a' citizenof the United States, residing at Pelican Rapids, in the county of Ottertail, State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boxes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skillediin the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to boxes and more.
especially to boxes formed of paper or paste board and to an improved fastening means for securing the same in a closed position.
Another object of the invention is to provide an improved form of box especially adapted for mail order business which will be light and simple in construction and which has its closures formed in a novel manner and with a novel form of fastening means for securing the same.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists of certain other combinations and arrangements of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed, it being a still further object of the invention to provide a device which will not be likely to get out of Working order.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a'perspective view of my improved box in a closed position. Fig. 2 is a plan view of a blank from which the box is constructed. Fig. 3 is a detail view of a fastener employed in connection with the box. Fig. 4 is a sectional view on the line 44 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings in detail, there is shown a blank section of paste board or other material forming my improved box 10, the same having side portions 11, 12, 13 and 14 of the same size and in the form shown of rectangular shape and being longer than wide, the same being adapted to be folded along the dotted lines 15 so as to form a box rectangular in cross section. One longitudinal edge of the side 14 is formed with a flap 16 adapted to be folded along the'dotted lines 17 and secured to the free edge and inner face of the side portion 11 when the blank is folded in the position shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings.
The end portions of the sides 11, 13 and 14 are formed with flaps 18 formed by bending the ends thereof on the dotted lines 19 at right angles to the longitudinal extent of the sides while the end portions are severed siiciaeaua-n of Letters Patent.
along the line s20 to permit them to be independently folded along the said lines 19 in overlapped relation at the ends of thebox Patented Jan. 5 T9115. a uwuoa meaa iy 17,1911. sent-1m. eaaoea the box formed by folding the flaps in the manner described, the tongue may then be bent in contact with the side portion 14 along the dotted lines 25 and secured by means of my improved fastening devices 26.
These fasteners comprise single strips of metal having enlarged portions 27 with oppositely extending pairs of tongues or pointed burs 28 extending from its side portions and stamped from a single section of mater1al,the said fasteners being secured to the s1de 14 longitudinally thereof by extending the burs 28 therethrough from the outer side and clenching the same upon the inner portion of the side 14, preferably in an outward direction as this has been found to more rlgidly retain the same in position. The reduced portions of the fasteners 26 are thus extended outwardly beyond the foldlng llnes of. said end portions and are adapted to extend through the slots 24 in the tongues 28 and bent upon themselves outwardly, thereby securing the flaps in posltion to close the ends of the box. In the construction of the box when folded, the flap 16 is secured to the side 11 along its free edge by mucilage or other adhesive substance and the end portions 29 of the flap 16 are severed along the lines 30 and secured to the free edge portions of the tongues 18 of the side 11 so that when the flaps are folded, the said portions 29 will be folded along the dotted lines 31 with the flaps 18 and will serve to materially strengthen the end portions of the box when the tongues 23 are secured thereover.
From the foregoing description in con nection with the accompanying drawings, it
- will be seen that I have provided an 1m- 'to other uses, as shall be found most desir-' able. The blank comprises a simple form of stamping from a single section of sheet material which can be readily folded and secured together in pro er form and with the closure provided can e economically manufactured.
I claim:
A foldable box comprising a bottom fold, I side folds and a top fold forming a continuation of the side fold, each of said folds having an end fold element, the end fold element of the bottom fold being longer than the end fold elements of the side and top folds, each end fold element of the bottom fold comprising an inner portion as Wide as the bottom fold but shorter than the end foldelements of the side and top folds and each end fold element of the bottom fold coinprisin a ortion narrower than the bottom fol and extending beyond the remaining end fold elements on that end of the box and having its extreme end portion provided with an opening; and metal stri s secured to the top fold and adapted to be engaged through said openings and bent upon itself when the box is set up in folded position, for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof, I affix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
