jnuwlhw H, Hal Z um 1 HANS C. HALLUM, 0F KEKUK, IOWA.
WRENCH.
Specification of Letters atent.
Patented Dec. 29, 191%.
Application inea May 9, 1914. serial No. 837,499.
To all wim/m it may concern:
Be it known that I, HANS C. IIALLUM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Keokuk, in the county of Lee and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wrenches, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to new and. useful improvements in wrenches, and has for its principal object to provide a device which combines the advantages of the ordinary type of spanner wrench with those of the adjustable j aw wrench.
Another object of the invention is to provide a Spanner wrench in which the jaws may be made to fit different size nuts without necessitating the use of screw or similar devices.
A further object of the invention is to provide a novel means for adjusting the jaws on the wrench to make the same of such size as to fit different size nuts.
l/Vith these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts which will be fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in which,
Figure l is a side view in elevation of a wrench constructed in accordance with this invention, portions thereof being broken away to more clearly illustrate the details of construction, Fig. 2 is an end view thereof, and Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of one of the jaw adjusting members.
Referring now to the drawings by characters of reference the numeral l designates as an entirety the main body portion of a wrench having formed at each end the enlargements 9.. These enlargements are provided with the extensions 3 which are spaced from each other to form the nut-receiving chamber 4.
A suitable depression 5 is formed in one of the extensions 3 and is arranged to receive the lug carried by the filler member which will be more fully hereinafter described.
An inwardly extending rectangular recess 6 is formed in the enlargement 2 and is of such width as to extend for substantially half the distance between the arms 3. hereinbefore referred to. This rectangular recess 6 extends in a plane parallel to the walls of the chamber 4 as clearly illustrated in Fig. l, and one wall of this recess lies flush with the extension having the depression therein.
The iiller member hereinbefore referred to, which is best illustrated in Fig. 3, and is designated generally by the numeral 7, preferably comprises the rectangular body portion S having formed integral therewith a suitable lug 9, which is arranged to seat within the depression 5 when the filler member is in place. Each iller member is provided with a similar depression l0 so that a number of such members may be arranged in coperative relation in order that the size of the nut receiving chamber may be regulated.
In order to hold the filler members in place there is provided the leaf spring 11 having the angular extension l2 which lies in a plane parallel to the bottom of the recess 6, hereinbefore described. The free end of this spring bears against the upper faces of the filler members hereinbefore described and thus prevents accidental displacement thereof.
It will beevident from the foregoing that in use when the nut receiving chamber 4 is too large to fit the nut properly a filler member such as that illustrated in Fig. 3. may be inserted so that the end opposite the end carrying the lug 9 will project into the recess 6 and lie between the free end of the spring 1l and the wall of the chamber 4 which is flush with the recess. The lugaed end is then raised so thatthe fillermav be forced rearwardly into the chamber against the angular extension 12 of the spring until the lug comes in alinement with the depression 5, at which time the lug is permitted to descend into the depression. and in this position it will be evident that the spring 11 will materiallv assist in holding the filler members in place.
lVhile in the foregoing there has been shown and described the preferred embodiment of this invention, it is to be understood that such changes may be made in the combination and arrangement of parts as will fall within the spirit and scope of the invention as deiined in the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
A wrench comprising a body portion. an enlargement at cne end of the bodv portion, said enlargement being provided with a nut receiving chamber and having a recess communicating with the nut receiving chamber, the nut receiving Chamber also having a depression in one 4of its walls, one wall' of the recess being Hush with one wall of the nut receiving chamber, a spring within the re-4 cess, e filler member arranged to extend into the recess between the spring and the opposite wall thereof, and a lug carried by the 10 opposite end of the filler member and :1r-k
ranged to extend into the depression in the wall of the nut receiving chamber whereby the filler member is held from displacement.
In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
HANS C. HALLUM.
