To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, VV ILMER P. HALL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Gordele, in the county of Crisp and State of Georgia, have invented a new and useful Strainer, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to strainers for bath tubs, lavatory, sinks and the like, one of its objects being to provide a device of this character which can be applied readily to structures already in use and which opcrates not only to prevent large substances from entering the drain pipe but also is capable of adjustment for the purpose of preventing drainage through the outlet, thus taking the place of the usal stopper provided for closing the outlet.
' A further object is to provide a structure of this character which is simple, compact and durable and can be readily actuated.
lVith the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawing the preferred form of the invention has been shown.

Referring to the figures by characters of reference 1 designates a lavatory having the usual passage 2 discharging into a drain opening 3 in the bottom of the lavatory. The strainer constituting the present invention is adapted to be fitted within the opening 3 and includes a tubular member 4 having a flared upper end 5 supporting a dome shaped end wall 6 into which are formed apertures 7. A convexed disk 8 is mounted upon and fits snugly against the dome shaped end 6 and has a plurality of apertures 9 ad p to be mov d int and o t of register with the openings 7. This disk 8 is held upon the dome shaped end 6 by a bolt 10 the head 11 of which bears downwardly upon a wear disk 12 interposed be tween said head and the disk 8. Said bolt extends loosely through an opening 13 and the end 6 of the member 4 projects into a sleeve 1 1 which depends from the center portion of the end 6 and is preferably formed integral therewith. A coiled spring 15 is housed in the sleeve 1% and bears at one end against the end 6, and at its other end against a washer 16 held adjustably upon the bolt 10 by a nut 17. As the spring 15 is constantly under compression it will be apparent that the head 11 will bind the disk 8 tightly upon the dome shaped end 6 so as thus to prevent leakage between said end and the disk. In order to facilitate rotation of the disk upon the end 6, cars or finger pieces 18 are extended upwardly from the disk at diametrically opposed points.
F or the purpose of limiting the rotation of the disk 8 upon the end 6, a stud 19 is extended upwardly from said end and into a short arcuate slot 20 formed in the lower face of the disk Thus it will be seen that only a limited movement of the disk upon the end 6 is permitted, this movement being suilicient to shift the openings 9 to opened or closed position relative to the openings 7.
In using the device herein disclosed the same is inserted into the outlet opening 3 and the threaded end portion 21 of the tubular member 4 will project below the structure 1 where it can be engaged by an outlet pipe 22. By screwing the pipe tightly onto the threaded portion 21 the flared end 5 can be caused to bind tightly upon the structure 1 and by placing a washer 23 between said flared portion and the lavatory leakage is prevented positively. Another washer 24: can be interposed between the bottom of the lavatory and the outlet pipe 22 so as to prevent leakage. In order topermit water to go through it to drain from the overflow passage 2 into the pipe 22, one or more openings can be provided in the member 4 where they communicate with the passage 2.
As heretofore stated the strainer which is herein described can be used in connection with various drainage structures such as lavatories, bath tubs, sinks, and the like and is advantageous for the reason that it does not require the use of a stopper such as commonly employed When it is desired to prevent liquid from draining from the receptacle to which the strainer is applied.
The spring 15 operates to automatically take up any wear which may occur between the end 6 of the disk 8 and, as aresult, a tight fit is always provided between said parts. The spring is completely housed Within the sleeve 14;, the lower'end of the sleeve being closed by the washer 16 and, consequently, the spring is protected from moisture and will be subjected to practically no corrosion or Wear. there being an inlet opening Within the member at a point between the ends thereof.
